I'm not sure if you get wolfpack assistance or not in GWX3, but it enhances the realism.

There are things about video games that can't encompass real life, and there's things in real life that can't encompass video games. I suppose being in a real U-boat would not have been a pleasant experience, but you would also have had more options and abilities available to you than a video game allows you to have. One being the ability to bottom out in shallow water to escape from enemy sonar pings, and two, the ability to jerry rig your sub if you had to in order to make it home. None of this, woops rudders gone, game over type of stuff.
I'm still curious as to how they did night surface attacks against convoys when it was a pitch black night.......:hmmm:

I downloaded SH2 onto my netbook a few months back and I think that you will all understand what has happened to me since then as I began to play it more and more...
In fact, I loved it so much that I ordered a really nice PC to run SH5 on, which arrived this morning...
But I then read the forums and I felt that SH3/GWX etc = no brainer and decided to go that route instead and will watch SH5 for later. (After a few months on SH2 - you can only imagine my sheer desperation for a proper campaigne and a career to follow with port departures and promotions not to mention that gramaphone!)
So today - I downloaded what appears to be a DRM free version of SH3. I then followed all advice and instructions in this and the other forums to add all the usual mods and I thought that you would like to know that I dont need any help at this juncture. None at all...
In fact, it is all working perfectly and I put to sea a few hours ago and am currently heading into the North Sea on my first patrol.
I cannot begin to thank all of you for all that you have done here. I am an experienced simmer and played flightsim many years ago and I am pleased to say that I am also quite impressed with all the goodies that I am finding on your guys site! SH is clearly supported by a dedicated and professional user community that encompasses some excellent skills - All I can say is "Wow!"
Lastly, please forgive me if I dont respond to any replies for a short while but as you can imagine, I am headed into a very very long and eventful evening. In fact, I seriously doubt that I will get to bed before tomorrow night. Ah cool!
Thanks again and a small donation to Subsim will follow shortly. It's the very least that I can do.

To add a signature (tag line) to your posts, click on User CP at the far left of the nav bar above where all the posts are on this or any other thread page.
When you get to the User CP (Control Panel), you'll see a section running down the left of the page under Your Control Panel.
Look under Settings & Options and click on Edit Signature, then you can create a signature that will appear at the bottom of all your posts.
FYI, really huge pictures and seizure-inducing animated gifs are generally discouraged, and you should follow the basic forum standards for your sig as well as your posts... but if you can see all the other signatures that our members use you'll have some idea of what's acceptable. :sunny:

Btw, I've been playing flight sim too a couple of years back, but that learning curve was just to steep for me. I didn't have the time for that unfortunately, because it's a really beautiful game, and as far as sim-realism goes the #1 sim for me.
Sh3 compared to that is a little more arcade-like (easy people, don't flame me, just a little more :)) but sh3 has something Flight Simulator never had IMO and that is atmosphere. I can't really explain, but let me put it like this; flight sim gives you the most realistic simulator, sh3 gives you the most realistic feeling. As someone else put it here somewhere; sh3 has got soul!

1943- I found big fat convoy grid FE or something.So if i tag it and transmit information will i be joined by other submarines (GWX with some other mods)or to strike alone?

You are going to be by yourself. Unfortuneately, the game doesn't model AI submarines or wolfpacks. If you are close to a German airbase, there is a chance Goering's vaunted Luftwaffe may steal your kill..er..I mean aid you in making your kill.

Thanks.I ask because i saw a screen of a nav map with sunken axis submarines by enemy convoy,but im not that sure and i read that when a convoy is marked with a circle its being tagged by other submarines.Then again I could have been dreaming. :DL And do SH4 or 5 simulate wolfpacks?

The circle for a convoy means there is an enemy submarine in the convoy. I believe it would be in the lead cargo ship position of the convoy if the convoy is marked with a circle.
I think I've run across other convoys with enemy subs in them that are in other positions and the convoy marker on the map is still a square.
Sh4 doesn't simulate wolfpacks. While rumored during pre-release that SH5 would simulate wolfpacks, I don't believe it does, but I don't play SH5 so I don't know for sure.

The circle means the lead escort in the convoy is a submarine, wish it meant that all the escorts were comprised of submarines but it just means the lead one. If you're surfaced they'll fire their deck gun at you, and are extremely hard to hit; stay submerged and they are harmless. They can't even fire torpedoes at you even if you're surfaced and not moving!

Welcome aboard!
"The group" won't have a single opinion on the matter, too many choices available and preferences are all individual and subjective. :DL
If you are looking for a supermod, you can choose from GWX, WAC, NYGM, and... LSH, I think. There should be a stickied thread for each in the Mods Workshop Forum, which would be the best place to find out what each one has to offer and ask for info.
Although it's not a mod, but a standalone program, probably the one thing most everyone here would recommend is SH3 Commander. Stickied thread for that also in the Mods Workshop.
With modding, it really is a matter of individual preference and what things YOU would like to see added to the game or removed from the game or enhanced in some way. If you have a particular preference or "wish-list" then make it known, that way you'll get recommendations of mods that will better suit your needs and desired style of play. :yep:

As FK said, mods are highly subjective and there's not likely to be a single monolithic opinion on what's best. It all comes down to personal taste, so by all means try out a few of the more popular ones (stickied in the mods forum) and see what you think. :sunny:

I keep reading "Install when your U-boat is in base." What does this mean? Is it that I have to have the game running to install the mod, or is the term, "in base" simply referring to the fact that the game has not been started? Sorry if this is a dumb question but I am not familier with the terms being used yet.

That means that you must be in port either before a patrol or after a patrol.

I'm new to this forum / discussion. I followed the forum in SH3 for years and loved it. This is quite a change. I've been on patrol for a long time now and still enjoy the game. I had a "vanilla" install so as to keep the game as it was. I recently downloaded GWX and it's kind of new to me but it appears to be cool ! Thanks for being here.......

OUt of idle interest anyone have the community manual? I know it is years ago but my old machine could not run SH3 smoothly enough so was stuck on SH2 (not complaining). I like the mild rpg element here and the few fancy tweaks of SH3. Seems to be an improvement SH5 looks atrocious, based on reviews, how dare a crew member not perform an order!
I've got it - or maybe only parts of it - saved as a series of 19 MSWord (.doc) files. The largest file is 296 KB; five are over 100 KB each and the rest are less than 50 KB each

I really enjoy the Silent Hunter games and subsim forums. Just glad I could help the community out:salute:.
What I could do in my retirement is copy the Wiki to Word and have it ready in a zip. Check general discussions for the retirement.

Is there any reason subsim.com can't host the SH3 community manual itself?
I just started SH3 and haven't played ever played a realistic subsim. I've been mildly discouraged by all the dead links. It's a little weird that nobody is archiving this stuff in the downloads section. I'd rather spend my time hunting for merchant ships than PDF's.

Since it was a community wiki, with many contributors and available for free, it should be legal. Since many people would like to have it, it should be worthwhile. That you are willing to do the conversion is admirable, and when it is uploaded you will recieve credit for your special work. This is a good thing, I think.

Had a problem with a kill not attributing to me. Took 33 hours to sink (only had one torpedo and a few flak shells left) but I stuck with it til it went down (not in real time :D). The guys yelled she was going down and it showed on the map but nothing in the Captain's log. Added it to the patrol log with SH3 Commander but it wouldn't attribute the kill to the total so I editted patrol.cfg and career.cfg which seems to have worked. Might go back and award myself the appropriate reknown....

There was a time that I sank about 20,000 tons on my first patrol in 1939, and not a single one was credited to me. Ya, found the renown for a medium cargo in the roster (190) and awarded myself that! There's a difference between being able to do anything and actually doing it ! :DL

Install SH3 Commander and in the Options go to time compression and change the When Near Land setting to 1024.

Hello all, and let me start off with saying that I'm so glad I found this thread. :DL
Bought SH3 from Steam yesterday and installed GWX. Followed all the instructions and whatnot so hopefully when I get the chance later on to test it it'll work withouth a hitch.
I'm sure I'll be consulting this thread veeeery often in the future, haha. :O:
Edit #1: Well, apparently it was rather naive of me to think it would work "out of the box". First of all the game crashes every time I quit the game in the main menu. That's really no problem since I was quitting the game anyway. The real problem came when I tried to do some of the naval academy missions so I'd get to grips with the controls etc.
I'd done the navigation tutorial before, so I skipped that and went straight for the artillery one. Attacked the first merchant ship, managed to get like 5 shots off and then the game CTD.
I'm running SH3 off Steam(I'm assuming it's 1.4b because GWX works), GWX 3.0 Gold modded on top of that and the Das Boot Sound Mod on top of that.
Although I'm not hearing much das bootiness in the sounds because everyone still speaks english.. All installed through JSGME in the Mods folder(no double folders), so by all logic, they SHOULD be working. Gonna try disabling DBSM from JSGME and giving 'vanilla' GWX a try.

Try totally reinstalling GWX3. I had the same problem when I first installed it. If that doesn't work, make sure your internet connection is totally uninterrupted, and reinstall stock SH3, then GWX3

You'll get German voices by enabling German speech in the SH3 options menu. Hope things work out, you could not do better than to pm Jimbuna he has a wealth of knowledge in things GWX.

Kind of have this memory of just surfacing in the navigating mission and "Aborting" it with Esc, but when I did that on the artillery mission, it didn't mark it as completed. :hmmm:

I am having a real weird and annoying trouble in game !
when I click on UZO/Periscope(AP/OP) for rotating it and then click again for releasing, cursor blinks on fire button and fires selected tube can't prevent this happens all the time :( is anybody had this trouble before and is there any solution for it ?

Are you using the res fix ? This is a known problem if I remember correctly.

Hello all!!
I found this wonderful game again after many years. I have played only vanilla game before, but now i tried it again with new mods. I have installed the Magui widescreen mod and i love it. With this mod there is also a manual how to use the "attack disc". Unfortunately i cant found any instructions how to use this ring or wheel (i dont know the right name for it) around the periscope. I downloaded this game through Steam, and this is the second computer the game is on - my first one crashed about 2 years ago. Can I still download/run GWX (and should I?) through this format? Does anyone know?

Yes you can run GWX on a steam version
Only thing to watch out for is the GWX installer will point to the common location of SH3 - typically Ubisoft/SilentHunterIII
Your version will be elsewhere - typically c/programs(*86)/steam/steamApps/common/Silent Hunter
Check that is the location and when the installer starts point it to the SH3 exe in your Steam folder :yeah:

I am curious if GWX - offers a chance at actually combating surface combatants eg: something other than a flower or destroyer? I've encountered many convoys on standard play of SH3 but never once come across a passenger liner, auxiliary cruiser or the like...
Since its a steam account I will be heartbroken to lose the ability to play the game should there be any installation errors.

Hi I'm new here. Recently addicted to heavily modded SH3 on 150% realism.
Now my question is, is there a wiki about all this stuff?
This forum has been a fantastic source of information. It's all here. It's great and I'm very thankful for everyone behind the mods and additions.
However, it's taken me days just to find all the information. The How-To's. As a person who's just stumbled upon this forum I can tell you it's very intimidating. Most of the stuff is obsolete. Most of the links are dead. A lot of the links are just links to other threads where "the subject is discussed". Yeah sure it is discussed for over 100 pages but I really would not like to read all that. Maybe the answer isn't even there.
The forum format is indeed intended for discussion, not hosting information. A wiki would be a blast. I can see the community is very strong here and could easily manage it and keep it up to date. It would benefit everyone.

The page might be of some use, but I think posting a question here on the forum might help you more. Some of the regular people here know the game inside out and can answer any of your questions much better than a wiki page can.

If you haven't done it yet, get one of the Super Mods- GWX or NYGM or another I can't think of right now :hmm2:.
Haven't played NYGM myself but GWX takes the stock game to a whole different level. I know I got bored with stock the first week playing the game.
I don't think you can go wrong with any of them.

Hi Ray and welcome aboard. You have done nothing wrong, the WO is just a lazy bum and needs kicking from his bunk to the bridge when you resurface. Just open the crew screen and you'll find him there drinking schnapps like as not. :up:

Unfortunately, unmodded SH3 with GWX does not model hiding on the bottom. However, in the mods section Stiebler and Hsie have done some fantastic work with their gameplay and hardcode fixes for the game(including limited wolfpacks :yeah:). If I recall, Stiebler has done some modifications that will make it harder for escorts to pick you up in shallow water although not necessarily on the bottom.
There is a mod out there that will allow you to rest on the bottom and make repairs and such but will not allow you to "hide" on the bottom.
Search around in the SH3 Mods section.
As far as thermocline goes, if you are using it, SH3Commander simulates thermal layers.

And minefields... yeah. Is there any way to get intel on suspected mine positions in SH3+GWX? It's April '40 and I just got a nasty surprise just off British east coast. And how to make TC drop when getting blown by mine?

However, I met something like that in my last patrol when cruising some 200 km away from any land, ESE from Scapa Flow. Was going on Ahead Standart, 30 meters deep, no hydrophone contacts... BANG! ALL compartments damaged and leaking, one sailor wounded -- checked the depth, but it was 50 m to bottom. And in 10 seconds -- BANG #2. Wounded died right away, conning tower destroyed, more leaks and involuntary crash dive all the way to bottom. And when I got to Kiel, my hull integrity was 93% -- I didn't know Germans made their U-boots of eternium, 'cause she survived one mine encounter and two successful depth bombings earlier on that patrol.
And thank you for such a great mod. GWX made me play SH3 again, and it's awesome.
UPD Funny thing. I mentioned I got one sailor killed during mine(?) accident, and one more died before that due to depth charge. So I tossed both of them to sea -- and voila, no crew casualties listed after patrol! Is this working alright?
-- Ya know, some of my crew died on patrol, and it'll look bad on my file...
-- Don't worry, just throw them to the sharks and I'll burn their papers -- so they never served on your crew!

That's not a mod. You can do that with stock and any of the major mods(GWX, NYGM).
Hit the H key and it will take you there. With the mouse you can manipulate the hand wheel. Also, one of the knobs will control the volume. COmes in handy for the deaf hydrophone operators like me. :D

the Rafael DSK GUI ?
The reason that I'm asking is:
I can install the Rafael DSK GUI over a clean installation of
SH3 - it works and I like this mod very much.
However - despite following Rafaels instruction to the
letter - I can not have Rafaels GUI and GWX 3.0.
Spent the better part of last night to get it running -
installing the three (SH3, Rafaels GUI and GWX) but
it won't work.
Of course I disabled GWX 3.0's 'Integrated orders', as Rafael
says - but it still won't work.
Does anybody have some experience with GWX + Rafael
and maybe some tips?

Success - I worked it out and have now a version with GMX and
Rafaels DSK GUI (updated version from 2010)

In case anyone runs into problems like I did, I'll post
the step by step procedure I used.
*NOTE*
Those of you who have GMX 3.0 up and running can
of course skip over step 1-3.
Ok, here we go:
1. Install a clean SH3 V.1.4
2. Install GWX 3.0
3. Run JSGME to enable the GWX features you like
4. Do not enable 'Integrated orders'
5. Download the updated version of Rafaels
GWX DSK GUI:

6. Unzip and you'll find a folder named /.../data.
7. Contrary to instructions (no offence intended).
I had no success in copying the mod into the /.../MODS
folder and activate it with JSGME.
8. Copy and merge the data folder from Rafaels GWX DSK
GUI to target directory /.../data
Now it should work.
I know that the method is brutal - but after trying for 2 days
I was desperate...

and one with both GWX and Rafaels GWX DSK GUI.
Have to check what works best for me - but I guess
it will be Rafaels GWX DSK GUI. :)

Surface the boat while the destroyer(s) are throwing depth charges
left and right - fire two eels on the big tanker and two on the
big cargo - and then crash dive?
I'd say its a 1:10 that the boat survives...

I have just trawled through this thread from start to finish over a period of a few weeks on and off and I would just like to thank NeonSamurai for all the information he has provided for any one new to SH3. I have learned quite a bit from it and although not actually a newbie to the game, you always find out something you didn't know from threads like this.

Having just bought SH3 (after many years of Combat Flight Sim) I am in that delicious, bewildered newbie state that all of us were once in. That said, I thank you for pointing us newbies in the right direction as at this stage any help is welcome. I have just downloaded the GW SuperMod but feel it best to get used to the vanilla set up first and with just a couple of very impressed hours of play under my belt I know I have a lot to look forward to as this is so great I wonder why I didn't take to it earlier. I really am loving it so much.
If anyone would be so kind as to make a quick list of their setup (mods wise) to give me some idea of what you guys like, I'd be most grateful. I'm not even sure at this stage what(if any) Mod Manager I have to get, but as I said I'm enjoying being new right now.
It's a great feeling seeing it all for the first time and I'm just through the first part of the Naval Academy exams and I can't wait to get better and get set up with some good mods.

Click on the Navigator icon at bottom left then the icon of the U-boat with the arrowed lines underneath and this will give you your depth under keel information.

Played in SH3 long ago, and looks like now is coming another underwater cycle for me.:)
After trying many mods, reading tons of manuals and hints about this great game, i still got a question without an answer. Sorry if this question was already discussed - with my poor English it is really hard to find something specific in the thread.
So, one thing in SH3 was remaining a mystery for me for all these years: how exactly works the registration of the fact of sinking the ship? Is getting the "She's going down!" message from one of officers the only way to ensure that ship will be counted in score? If so, this is very sad, because i was seen many game situations when keeping periscope depth and periscope above the surface just to get "She's going down!" message can be very dangerous for the boat. With GWX flooding damage model, most ships which got a torpedo in their belly will slow sink, and sometimes time between torpedo strike and "She's going down!" can be 30 or more minutes of game time. in the same time, UBoat that runs on the periscope depth for a 30 minutes after attack is almost surely dead one.
So, keeping in mind that i'm doing something wrong, i'd like to ask experiensed captains: if my boat will dive into the deep to avoid escorts' attacks immediately after firing torpedoes, will the victims of my attack (if any) be scored if i'll not see they're sinking? And is there a right way to ensure scoring attacked ships without risk of keeping visual contact with target?

As long as you are within a certain range of your kill -- and this is several nautical miles, but I do not remember the exact range -- you will almost always be awarded credit when the ship goes down. You do not need to see it go down.
So, feel free to do like most of us do... as soon as you fire your torpedos, begin your defensive measures to avoid escorts. Absolutely get the scope down and head for depth.
What can happen is that you don't cripple your ship enough to go down quickly, and it sails off while you are still fighting escorts. It may indeed sink 20 nm away and you will not get credit for it... but neither would you in real life.
What rarely happens -- it has happened to me maybe three times in several hundred patrols -- is that you will damage a small ship in rough seas and it will go down with no credit. Apparently it is the weather getting the kill. Nothing to do about that.

Got the game a few days ago and got most problems sorted out during Naval Academy and my first two career missions. Seems I finally found the place to ask what still baffles me .. so here goes, and I appreciate any and all hints tips or even RTFMs - if you'd be so kind as to tell me which section as the GWX manual is 600pp+ :) (Ah, yes I am running downloaded SH3 with GWX 3.0 "Gold" installed)
1.Deck Gun: found out the hard way that after "Man Deck Gun" my sailors started happily shooting at a neutral (Swedish)passenger ship. Hm, I had seen the ship runnig all lights and guessed it was neutral. Surfaced only to verify that what I saw in the periscope was indeed a Swedish flag ... I was assuming that "Open Fire" would be a necessary command (and I DID tell them to hold fire after downing my previous victim) How do I assure battle readiness and still be able to decide when shooting starts?
2.Fuel: In Wilhelmshaven, I was assigned grid BF16 and went there going around Scotland and north of Ireland. When it was time to return, I realized I had only 1/3 fuel left so my only option was to return via the Channel. Hm not good as it was already Sept.7 1939. Is it normal to be sent on patrols that are kind of suicidal in the end?
3.Conflicting orders: On that same patrol I receive two radio messages on Sept 8 (while returning and already entering the Channel): "U-47 Return to Kiel" But my mission objective still says: Return to Wilhelmshaven and I am not sure I can make it to Kiel on the fuel I still have. Second message: "Between Faroes and Shetlands: U-47 North third." and in same message: "Between Sehetland and Norway: East third U-47" ... WTF? are these more of those "immersion" messages or am I supposed to follow some kind of orders here?
4.Passenger Ships: that 8.000 GRT Swedish Passenger ship sure looked like a juicy target. We have "strict orders" (do we really, or was that just for the press?) not to shoot neutral or passenger ships, but isn't that going to change during the course of the war? And what about "hostile" passenger ships? It was bad enough to see a ship with couple hundred (couple thousand?) people on board go down, but that was kind of an accident. As much as I like SH3, I guess I would not want to play this simulation if "success" hinges on giving the order to kill a few thousand civilians just for a few "renown" points. How do you seasoned SH3 players view this issue? Especially since taking on warships instead does not seem to be a viable option (again, one order received: "do NOT engage warships ...").
As you can see, I'm very new to this game, please bear with me :)

Got the game a few days ago and got most problems sorted out during Naval Academy and my first two career missions. Seems I finally found the place to ask what still baffles me .. so here goes, and I appreciate any and all hints tips or even RTFMs - if you'd be so kind as to tell me which section as the GWX manual is 600pp+ :) (Ah, yes I am running downloaded SH3 with GWX 3.0 "Gold" installed)
1.Deck Gun: found out the hard way that after "Man Deck Gun" my sailors started happily shooting at a neutral (Swedish)passenger ship. Hm, I had seen the ship runnig all lights and guessed it was neutral. Surfaced only to verify that what I saw in the periscope was indeed a Swedish flag ... I was assuming that "Open Fire" would be a necessary command (and I DID tell them to hold fire after downing my previous victim) How do I assure battle readiness and still be able to decide when shooting starts?
2.Fuel: In Wilhelmshaven, I was assigned grid BF16 and went there going around Scotland and north of Ireland. When it was time to return, I realized I had only 1/3 fuel left so my only option was to return via the Channel. Hm not good as it was already Sept.7 1939. Is it normal to be sent on patrols that are kind of suicidal in the end?
3.Conflicting orders: On that same patrol I receive two radio messages on Sept 8 (while returning and already entering the Channel): "U-47 Return to Kiel" But my mission objective still says: Return to Wilhelmshaven and I am not sure I can make it to Kiel on the fuel I still have. Second message: "Between Faroes and Shetlands: U-47 North third." and in same message: "Between Sehetland and Norway: East third U-47" ... WTF? are these more of those "immersion" messages or am I supposed to follow some kind of orders here?
As you can see, I'm very new to this game, please bear with me :)

Hi nataraj! I am new to this forum but playing the game for some time...:arrgh!:
1).....illuminated ships are neutral that's for sure.When you give order "Man Deck Gun" select Hold Fire.Then when you choose a specific target
you have to look through the binoculars and then press
Space button and they will start to shoot at this target.Crew will continue to fire until the target sink or you give the command Hold Fire,or change the target(with binoculars and Space)
2)....if the port are Wilhelmshaven then you use the type 7b.Then I do not understand how your fuel is not enough.......with 7b could cross the Atlantic and almost reach American shores.I guess you're moving at high speed(ahead flank ) and it consumes your fuel faster.My advice is to move on "Ahead Standart" 11-12knots (press 3).When the sea is rough cut speed 4-5knots(press 1) or 9-10knots (press 2) this will not only reduce fuel consumption but also in visual contact you will have more time to react.
3)Radio messages.These messages appear in the game no matter what flotilla play or what number is your boat.They are always the same.Just ignore them :sunny:

Thanks for your explanations - in the meantime I figured out many things myself - if I'd seen your post earlier that would have surely saved me a lot of trouble!
Fuel: I guess I did not know how to read the fuel gauge correctly. On the other hand: yes, I went "ahead full" most of the time. Did my next patrol mostly with ahead 1/3 and ended it after more than 20 days and fuel at 50%.

I am in September 1939, patrolling off the Norwegian coast (AF87) and I encountered a Norwegian coastal tanker with no lights:hmmm:.From the first time i guessed it was an allied ship (not neutral) and i was prepared to attack it:up: but I confirmed its flag at a range of 900m :/\\!!.Is it possible for a neutral ship to travel without lights?

Not something I've ever tried as far as I'm aware but if you give it a go make sure it is introduced when commencing a patrol from your home base.
Failing that, start a new career.

I am struggling with something that I am sure is stupidly easy, but for the life of me I can't seem to figure out ... so here goes:
Why does my sub suddenly refuse to "go?" I mean my poor under-manned boat is constantly running out of endurance so am having to manually rotate people through the quarters. But there have been a couple times (right this second being one) where I have a fully-manned, and fully-rested diesel crew and yet the sub will not go! I have a speed order given (hehe), and a CE manned as well as other spots course ... but am I missing something somewhere?

Might help if you posted a screenshot of your crew layout. I haven't played this game in years but I would check the following.
Check and see if you still have fuel, also check your bridge crew, check if silent running is ordered, check and see if you have battery power or are running on it.

Im running it on a netbook(1.6Ghz, 1 Gb RAM)and everytime I bring the horizon into view my machine starts to slow right down.
I understand its a machine problem but is there anything I can do to alleviate it. Deck gun and bridge stuff is painfully slow. I.ve reduced all the graphic properties including particle density down to 20.
Any help would be gratefully accepted.
All other positions are smooth as butter and underwater is too.

It´s the low end grafik card inside the netbook (and perhaps the cpu). It isn´t able to handle the 3d sight on bridge, flak, peri etc. You have the choice between slowness or changing the system - sorry.
PS: This is my "small" engine (http://www.sysprofile.de/id115494). It has no problems with SH3 with LSH5.1 in 1680x1050px at 4096 time compression.

Here is the problem with the netbook. The CPU has enough power for the game. But the grafik chip and the ram are too weak for SH3 - even without mods.
For example: LSH5.1 (http://www.lsh3.com/) takes 3 minutes for loading on my machine (http://www.sysprofile.de/id115494) - from ssd. Both, LSH5.1 and Ccom (by rowi58) needs 4gb ram including the 4gb patch. GWX needs a little bit less hardware - but it needs more than the stock game as well.

Well, if you haven’t tried GWX yet(Mega Mod), you must definitely try it once to see if it fits your taste. It add much better graphics and environment with realistic damage models, ship sinking times etc...

The above may work, try it.
If not, install a fresh version of SH3 (after having deleted the SH3 folder and a registry clean).

I recall that I played the stock version of SH4 for some time and added a mega MOD with no issue's.......
but I thought that maybe 3 would be different
I have limited space on my computer now so I really do not want to multi install the program.
I will try it( stock) out and try, then if I have to delete and reload SH3 again, no big issue I have the disc

Just hit an Ammunition Ship from 400m with two T1's and it went boom. In very small letters. Shouldnt I and the surrounding ships be in a very bad way? I was aiming for a large merchant behind it and got my TDC wrong... :p

Hello all my fellow Kapitans. Mastered the abeam position within 800m for the "aimed shot" Hit a large merchant westbound AM5178 and it hardly slowed. Hit the aft ammo bunker and its not even smoking... :rolleyes:
Any suggestion as to which compartment sinks the ship quickest as I've got DDs all round me at "Long Range".

It would appear that even after 9 years of existence many players do not know the vast options that SH3 offers.
I have translated the entire museum in 2013 and I knew not many would even see my how much work I had spent...
Although the game is 9 years old,i started playing it the last year.Also i haven't still read the whole manual of GWX.Despite the game's age,it is very attractive.

Just took command of U-3008 and does anyone know how to get the creeping electric motors to work?
Ahead slow at periscope depth is faster than my IXD2 at ahead standard!!
Anybody else noticed that periscope depth is about a metre too deep so the scopes are always awash. XXI is an awesome boat! :)

A newbie reporting, or maybe it's better to say that I'm quite familar with the game but so far I've played with WA assist and God's eye on, so it has been quite arcade. I'd also like to thank everyone for suberb forum, it has been great help so far.
However I have a newbie question (at the moment, more to come, just installing GWX 3.0...:D). Is there a good and inclusive guide to master manual torpedo aiming explaing what gyroangle etc. means and how to use them? I tried to get hang of it at the Naval Academy, but the result was quite miserable...

Okay, a problem.
Yesterday was a fine day. SH3 and beer, many beers...
Today not so good day. A hangover, Chirstmas dinner with mother in law and my mf Silent Hunter won't work. Thank God I still have beer.
So I can't load my career. It load and then jumps out of the game and says Silent Hunter 3 won't work, or something like that. My Windows is in Finnish, so I don't know what an English version would say. Single missions ar working fine. I've tried load the game via SH Commander, via Steam and GWX.
Can somebody help me?

It is important that these are all installed correctly for your game to work properly.

I think I had everything installed correctly. The worked fine for ages, but suddenly things started to hit the fan. I played one night and everything was fine, next day when I tried to load the patrol it threw me out of the game and said SH3.exe stoped working. I tried last save and one before that. Same result.
It's a real pity if I lose that patrol. So far it was the best patrol I ever had. I sunk HMS Rodney, a destroyer, armed trawler and three merchants.
Me not happy :/\\!!

have just invested in an old fast dell with win xp and having loaded up SH3 i see that the mods have really moved on - I last played this 7 years ago - can anyone tell me about this mods manager and whether i have to have it before i add any other mods in - before i just copy and pasted in ogg files etc but it seems more complcated now.

Hi to all. I have a question. Which file give the information about u-boat names in career. I thought - Flotilla.cfg from CFG folder.
But in this file for example to 1st flotilla boats (1939) i have 3 strings:
Name000=U-1
Name001=U-2
Name002=U-3
When i start career in 1st flotilla in 1939 - i can take U-5 or U-6.
Maybe from: data\Roster\German\Submarine\SSType??.cfg

:wah:being a total newbie to the game I would like to know how I can load torpeados quicker,,i mean I assigned the crew ,and went through the weapons officer etc and nothing happened,i was not in silent running ,and I watched a merchant just sail away into the distance,i have no mods at all but would love one just to load torps quicker,after the ship had been gone outta sight the so n so loaded the tubes?,how can I change this so they follow orders and load straightaway,if its possible,thanx for any help,jb62.

I use SH3 Commander and that has the option to auto reload.

I have noticed that the community manual is down again. Luckily i have downloaded it some time ago and have a bunch of pdfs with the chapters of the manual available.

Ok, so I recently bought the game on a Steam sale and I've been wanting to learn to target ships manually because I can't even make out how to make automatic targeting work. Now I've been quick to download mods like GWX 3.0 and SH3 Commander, but I've seen videos where people use German Attack disks and stuff like that. Have any idea where I could get mods like that and which ones would be best? Thanks in advance.:up:

Hello all. Could anybody be able to point me in the proper direction for a mod/mods that would provide me with some maps and mapping tools for use in game? Like convoy and shipping routes? As well as addons that generally help with plotting patrols routes and the like. I've read through a lot of the current posts and there's just so many it's a bit overwhelming :o

Hey everyone... I'm fairly new to SH3 (had it for years... never "mastered" it by any account). I downloaded GWX 3.0 this time around... but now I have a few questions.
1- I HATE trying to identify ships. All I get, with the related 'realism' settings to OFF, is a generic description of the ship. "Cargo Ship" or "Tugboat" etc. I have to creep WAAAY on up there to see the flag (my eyes ain't so good)... I once thought it was a Brit flag and started to shell from about 4km away... turned out to be a German ship. OOPS! So... any way to auto this like in standard where it would mark the ID book for you?
2- I've started a campaign in Aug. 39. I know the war hasn't officially started, so most nations are considered "neutral" during my first patrol. The first time I started, I blasted some Brit merchants... but lost a lot of renown. What gives? Can I only hit armored Brits until September? Makes the first patrol BOOORING.... even if somewhat realistic I suppose.

1, use the f12 key or the outside key on panel, then.<> buttons to scroll thro that will help you identify shipping and flags.
2, your first patrol, aug,39 is basically a traing patrol, so sail for 18 hrs and then return back to port.
3, also use sh3 commander, you can alter your dates and years in port.

So.... I have another question. The war has started. I have my orders stating I should avoid neutral ships etc. But I have a question about when the ROE allow me to sink an Allied Merchant ship.
The rules via the radio message say that it must be 1- a Troop ship or the like, 2- have armed escorts, or 3- be clearly supporting Allied operations.
Is a lone merchant ship flying the British flag a fair target? She isn't a troop ship, doesn't have an escort... BUT, to me (the antsy U-Boat commander), he looks like fair game. Those goods will be sold, the revenue will generate taxes, those taxes will pay for the King's military... sounds like helping the war effort to me. Can I sink it?

I really wish to play at 100% realism, but I also enjoy making screenshots. Is there a way to change the "realism percentage impact" on those gameplay options, i.e. +10% for, say, manual targeting; 0% for free cam?

Leave all the boxes ticked except the External Camera.
Your 100% will reduce by a small percentage which should not impact that much on your renown.
You can change the game play options after you click on the map in the office.

You can open it up in notebook.
At the bottom is the percentage settings. here is mine:-

Steam's on Sale until tuesday, and after seeing some let's plays of Silent Hunter, I really wanna try it out!
Thing is, when someone asks which is the better game, the answer(s) often comes with modded in it.
So, I'm thinking of buying SH3. Which are some fundamental (bug solvers, HUD improvements, graphic enhancers) mods to start with?
Also, enjoying the opportunity: I want to buy one more game of the series, do I buy the 4th or the 5th game?
The pacific theater, and the sonar on the US subs, look tasty as hell, but the 5th appears to be a graphic beauty of a game, but the europe theater is already covered in the 3th...

New poster here. I have been looking for Silent Hunter games for many years now and especially after watching Das Boot (the long version) :D
So I started the SH games with SH3 Steam version because it was only 2.50eur.
I'm noob with mods (in general) but installed GWX and MaGui F with EFS. Everything seems to be running ok at least now.
Three questions:
1. with MaGui F it doesnt change the game to wider screen at all, do I need SH3 Commander for that and doest it work with Steam version well?
2. I guess I cant run multiple GWX campaigns at the same time? because when I use JSGME I cant enter for example merged and black sea campaign at the same time.
3. Any (small) cool mods I should add with GWX? (which works with Steam version)
Sorry if these are already talked here but this forum is so huge so finding info can be tough sometimes!

So the "merged campaign" is actually the big campaign. I'll keep that.

Hello all,
I was casting about for a new game to play while I wait for another (Naval Action) game to wipe and reset.
I watched some YouTube videos, read some Steam reviews, became interested and here I am... a total noob working my way through the Naval Academy missions/exams... This website has been beyond wonderful in helping get through all the minefields and nets of getting this game loaded, running, and modded!!!

Well I have just downloaded LSH3 Edition 2015 and now I'm stuck. I downloaded the game direct from the Ubisoft website to my windows 10 pc and the mod wants me to put in in the SH3 folder and I have no idea where it is or how to find it. I can right click on SH3 folder and find its location but no idea how to tell the mod where it is. Can anyone help please?
