Ok just wondering if the guages in the stock sh3 game are anywhere near realistic when it comes to back lighting. I looked online and can not find any photos of the guages lit up at night. I cant imagine that the guages did not light up somehow because from what I have read and looked at the interior of the sub can be really dark when running with hatches closed.

Now I would guess that the guages have to be lit but it appears that in the stock game all the "so called" back lighting is comming from the center of all the guages.

Does anyone know what the actual guages looked like when lit up or can find me a photo. Also is there a good mod for the guages in sh3 to use. Started playing with the interior textures of the sub and wanted to try a few experiments.

Old gauges i know did one of two things when i have pulled things like ampmeters and voltmeters apart from equipment.

1. They either completly light the whole gauge as in simply adding a light bulb inside or under a clear piece of plastic (such as appears in SH3 stock guages)

2. They place a light behind a colored panel and only allow light to shine through the cutouts for all the numbers and markings. (Such as the dashboard readout on some cars and boats)

The other question i have would have to do with interior lighting on the sub itself. If you look at the view inside the submarine you will see lighting effects similar to the ones used on the outside for light houses and other effects that use the halo TGA map.

Is there a way to mod the interior effect of the light possible turn it down some. All the movies and pics i have seen of submarines show lighting but only in LOCAL areas not the entire compartment as seen in SH3. Be nice to see if there was a way to tone down the White light and increase the brightness of the station guages.

Just a thought i throw out there for everyone to think about or try.

This is a computer game! If you want 'complete reality' join your country's navy and enlist in the submarine service if it is available. Saving that option, turn off your monitor during the night operations and have a go at it.

I'm sorry to go off on ya, but cheese and rice its a game!! I've been watching this site since sub commander was released and all I can say is, set your self to 100% reality (w/in the game), sink some shipping and remember its a game.

I don't mean to offend anyone but come on.

I understand that this is a game but my question was more related to actual submarine back in world war 2. What were the guages lit up by?

The mods done by this community and the great people that have contributed to it have all been done to increase realism. We have mods for everything even better looking fruit and meats. So i dont think asking a question about guages was all that bad. I was looking at it as more of a look for me to play with on my computer and getting a better quality picture.

No I would not join the navy lol i dont have the guts or other rhings to find myself in a steel coffin.

I'm not offended by you comment at all but other people may be interested in this type of possible mod even if your not.

As for simulation in general i do like all my simulators to be the best and most realistic sim as it can be. Hopefully we can see some of our community sugestions in SH4 in the near future.

No, you really didn't need to 'go off' on him, especially since this is also a sim and most of the mods and threads are devoted to making it more 'realistic'.

William, the answer to your question is here (scroll down just a little to see the actual guages:

And the mod that makes your boat this way can be found here:
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=87551&highlight=bordinstrument

This mod has also been improved upon; said improvements can be found here:

And here:

Oh, yeah, the Grey Wolves supermod comes with all this installed. I think NYGM Tonnage War does also, but I'm not sure.
