Other than produce pretty sparkles.

I understand what HE ( High Explosive) and AP ( Armour Piercing) are -- but when ever I use "Star Shells", I may as well be firing lumps of hot coal at the enemy.

They dont do much to a C-Class or a Flower Corvette -- so what are they for?

You can use them as flares during the night-time or you can shoot them onto (ONTO-not INTO) an enemy ship hull and you can see them through the night better.

Makes the water look cool on the dark nights without a moon too.

Used for surface attacks against lone ships so you can spot them with the deck gun sight. But they will also reveal your position too, so use them with discression.

Will a merchant report you if you are spotted, before destroying the bridge, and radio/code room? If not, one more detail to add?

Without looking through the sights of the deck gun; I'll raise the deck gun to over twice the height or better and a little ahead of the target. Then fire a starshell. It'll hang in the air for awhile. That illuminates the target nicely for either the deck gun or a torpedo attack. If needed every so often fire another starshell to illuminate the area again. Of course that'll announce your presence to any nearby warship. It's worth it though.

You can use it and identify targets at night more easy.
I fire the shell on the top of the target

Also you can fire one to a destroyer to attract their curiosity :rotfl:

Make sure not to fire in your direct line of sight. Done that and got blinded for a couple of minutes.

I shoot them at the enemy if I'm almost out of ammo. Not sure if it does any harm but I hate to let them go to waste. I fired one accidently at night near a convoy once when I first started to play the game and it was useful to the enemy. Plus I like to make my night departures and arrivals a bit more dramatic for the band and fraulines so a couple over their heads always brings a tear to everyone's eye.:smug:
