Release 2.6 of SH3 Commander is now available!

DOWNLOAD Through SUBSIM (http://www.subsim.com/subsim_files/patches2005.html)

"Main engine" changes:
- Added ability to change crew officer faces (includes automatic 3D head and hat wearing alignment)
- Crew transfer message now includes crewman's main qualification
- Added new "Static settings" feature
- Changes to "Randomised events.cfg" file - refer to instructions in header of file
- Added ability to recognise when docked at a milk cow or other friendly base and automatically adjust the number of days spent in base to 1 (plus any extra days required to repair damage)
- Improved backup mechanism for scene.dat and Basic.cfg files
- Improved copy mechanism for unique crew configurations
- Randomising new crew names now includes number of patrols, certain medals and experience (ie you're no longer limited to a purely "green" crew everytime you start a new career)
- US rank labels are now the same as stock SH3. SH3 Commander does not support rank "bumping", that is, changing your starting rank to anything higher than the SH3 default
- Crew Manager now warns where crewmen have been awarded the U-boat War badge prior to 13 October 1939
- Crew Manager now warns where crewmen have been awarded the Wound Badge but not the U-boat War badge
- Now looks for and runs SH3Weather if it exists just prior to launching SH3 (when in base during or at the start of a career)
- Added new fatigue model - Grey Wolves 24 Hour
- Added ability to randomise main screen banner - refer to "!!BANNER INSTRUCTIONS!!.txt" under the Banners folder
- Minor adjustments to main interface
- Minor adjustments to all Cfg files

New included mods:
- Hemisent's simulated equipment malfunctions plus optional damage caused by sabotage (simulates the effect of equipment malfunctions plus damage caused by sabotage by randomly reducing default equipment specifications)

Note that prior to installing this release you must *fully* uninstall your current release. Don't forget to rollback SH3 Commander first and back up any SH3 Commander files that you may have modified!

To download, click here (http://www.users.on.net/~jscones/software/products/SH3Cmdr26.exe). Please note that SH3 Commander's Update feature will not work due to me changing ISP last month.

After you have installed SH3 Commander you can reapply any add-ons such as the Combined Skin Pack. YOU SHOULD ALSO ENSURE THAT YOU FIRST VISIT THE SH3 OPTIONS SCREEN, as some options have changed.

As always, please post your questions/feedback/problems to this thread after reading the readme (http://www.users.on.net/~jscones/software/SH3Cmdr%20Help.html) and FAQ (http://www.users.on.net/~jscones/software/SH3Cmdr%20FAQ.html) (both files are installed into your SH3 Commander folder). Due to other priorities, threads started elsewhere with titles like "Problem" or "Why won't this work", may not receive my attention.

**Feel free to post links to this thread in other SH3 related forums.

In NYGM TW 2.0 Teddy told us we had to install three files included with NYGM TW 2.0 into the SH3 Commander's cfg file. Does that still hold true? I don't want to assume we still need them and cover over files automatically installed with SH3 Commander 2.6, but then I don't want to assume we don't need them and end up screwing up something in one of my careers.

Thank you very much for the obvious hard work you have put in to this, it is greatly appreciated. I'm of an age where I don't know how these things work, yet they make the game so much more enjoyable. (I also like the new shortcut with the Kaleun's cap - I must save up and buy myself one!)

You might want to take this q over to the NYGM thread - Observer had access to the SH3Cmdr Pre-release for NYGM compatibility testing, so he'll be best to tell NYGM users what they must do (if anything) to keep NYGM and SH3Cmdr compatible.

Good point. Sorry about that.

By the way, as always SH3 Commander is fantastic. Couldn't imagine playing the game without it.

Instructions call for Rolling Back before uninstalling.

What does that mean exactly .?....Roll Back and Uninstall....OR...Rollback, Launch SH3, Exit and uninstall.

I'm asking because when I Rollback and Close without launching I get the message that "No game files will be updated". So I'm wondering if rolling back alone really does anything.

Sorry if this isn't clear...

Sorry if this isn't clear...
1. Open SH3Cmdr
2. Press "Rollback SH3" button if button is enabled
3. Press "Close" button
4. Press "Yes" button at message prompt. This message is simply saying that no new files will be copied into SH3. You've already returned to SH3 the previously backed up files when you pressed the "Rollback SH3" button.
5. Uninstall SH3Cmdr via the usual Add/Remove programs method
6. Open Windows Explorer
7. Navigate to where SH3 Commander was installed
8. Delete everything BUT SH3Cmdr.ini. SH3Cmdr.ini stores your career details. Delete it, and you'll delete your Commander history and SH3Cmdr settings. This file, and your Personnel Files stored under "My Documents", are NOT deleted when you uninstall SH3Cmdr (also note that any new files added to SH3Cmdr after installing, such as the CSP, are not removed either, hence why this step is necessary).
9. Run SH3Cmdr26.exe

From there you are on your own - just follow the wizard. ;)

Just one question, to have my rank anda when I go to the "manage your crew" menu and my crew rank in german, I have to put, in the SH3 Options -text options- rank translations in german?

Yes. But note that the changes won't take effect until the next time you launch SH3 via SH3Cmdr.

I am having the same problem. I even changed the files as instructed in the NYGM-TW Manual. Game still hangs.

Edit: Reinstalled 2.5 and everything loads OK. There appears to be a problem with SH Commander 2.6 and NYGM-TW 2.01.

hmm... I think that miscellanous file has something to do with it. Has any1 tried installing without the NYGM 2.01 files provided in documentation?

edit: Hmm tried running with NYGM 2.01 documentation files and without them. Still hangs mid load while trying to play a patrol

I have no problem with NYGM 2.01 ...the game loads fine .Career/missions...
Check NYGM's manual and see which options you have to set/tunr-off in SHcmdr.Maybe you missed something? Also, did you rollback before removing your old release?

That's one I wasn't expecting. It just keeps getting better.

Now I just have to get moved into my own place so I can start playing again.

The game loads OK for me but when loading my Career, the loadbar stops about 60-65% along and stops PC locked program not responding. Now I'm in mid-patrol so that may be the problem;however, having said that I reinstalled 2.5 and everything loaded OK. BTW I followed Jaesons instructions for removal and upgrade to the letter. Also I have it configured as specified in the NYGM manual. I assumed because it ran OK when 2.5 was reinstalled it has something to do with 2.6 but I may be wrong.

If the patrol was started while using 2.5,and then you installed 2.6 ant tried to load, then that probably is the problem. If you started your career with 2.6 and can't load i don't know what's wrong.I have tried loading /strating a career/a mission and such and i can't get anything to happen. The only problem i have with 2.6 is a little "Incompatibility" with some backgrounds from the NYGM patch ,more specifically the ones when clicking on the map (the ones from 2.0 were the normal one, with Germany highlited in Europe, and the ones from the patch were with a real u-boat flolating. When using 2.6 the image won't change don't know why).

For all who are having problems run SH3Cdr 2.6 with NYGM-TW 2.01, I believe I know what the problem is. NYGM changed the various .ZON files for all the Subs. SH3Crd randomizes the “crush depth” which is part of theses .ZON files. The randomized “crush depth” settings were in the “miscellaneous.cfg” in SH3Cdr 2.5, they are now in the “SH3 options.cfg” in 2.6. Even if you load the “miscellaneous.cfg” that comes with NYGM, 2.6 will “not” ready it. Therefore the .ZON files are corrupted and SH3 will hang when loading. To correct the problem opens the “miscellaneous.cfg” from NYGM in WordPad and copy the following:

[CRUSH DEPTH]
;Randomises/sets crush depth for each sub type.
;<Subtype>=<folder/file name>|.zon offset|default crush depth in metres>
;Upper and Lower provides the randomisation range.
;Written to each sub's .zon file
Upper=1
Lower=0.9

VIIC/42=NSS_Uboat7c|x1A86|450
XXI=NSS_Uboat21|x35A8|350

Then open “SH3 options.cfg” and replace this;

[CRUSH DEPTH] ;THIS BLOCK CAN BE DELETED IF UNWANTED
;Randomises/sets crush depth for each sub type
;<SUBTYPE>=<folder/file name>|<.zon offset>|<default crush depth in metres>
;Upper and Lower provides the randomisation range
;Written to each sub's .zon file

Also NYGM change the file structure of “AI_Sensor.dat” This is where the “Randomly adjusts active/passive listening device values to simulate the impact of thermal layers” setting are keep. If you look in the SH3Cdr 2.6 CFG directory you will note that along with “Randomised Events.cfg” there are also “Randomised Events_19xx.cfg”, each have entries that effect “AI_Sensor.dat”. Unless you replace theses entries in each file:

SH3 will hang up on launch

Thanks lurker_hlb3. I'm sure that is all that is required to get them "back together" again.

But as I posted earlier, if anyone is experiencing problems with NYGM and SH3Cmdr, they should post over in the NYGM thread where the chance Observer will see it is higher. He may already have the solution ready for users.

This will get players going again. I suspect Observer may post a link to replacement SH3Cmdr R2.6 files, or he may have some other method for updating them, or he may just use your solution!

You've reminded me of one thing that is explained in the readme, but I'll point it out for those that, well, don't read the readme...

By default SH3Cmdr will only model malfunctions. It will not model the effects of sabotage.

However, the effects of sabotage can very easily be "switched on" simply by deleting or renaming the "Randomised events_19**.cfg" files located in SH3Cmdr's Cfg folder.

Thus, an alternative to your solution, if NYGM players *want* sabotage effects, they can remove the "Randomised events_19**.cfg" files and just update the "Randomised events.cfg" file. Alternatively, if they don't want the sabotage effects, and they don't want to cut and paste into eight files, they can still follow the above steps, but in "Randomised events.cfg" they should delete every line on from:

;----------------------------------------------------------------------------------SABOTAGE OVERLAY
[Sab0:data\Library\GUNS_SUB.sim]
etc

I'd recommend for player ease that someone just post updated NYGM compat files for d/l, but I don't know whether Observer has other plans. Hopefully he'll visit shortly.

SH3Cmdr doesn't add 1944/45 start dates to your game - for that you need a mod such as GW, RUb, NYGM, or at least Beery's FlotillaMod. SH3Cmdr just supports these years if they are available.

:p ah my noobyness is showing.. cheers

Installing whilst in a current career is perfectly OK, but I'd return to base first. Then I'd follow the steps outlined on the previous page of this thread.

You definitely don't need to touch your installation of SH3/GW in any way (indeed, this is regardless of whether you run GW, RUb, NYGM, IUB or vanilla), but I will draw this paragragh from the GW readme file to your attention:
This mod is fully compatible with SH3 Commander. However, in order to maintain the integrity of the destroyer aggression modifications, it is recommended to leave or set the "Lost contact time" to 15 minutes in SH3 Commander’s. Please refer to the SH3 Commander Help file for further instructions.

@OBSERVER: It appears that you have not read some of my PM's. I have just d/l the "compatibility fix" file that you have provided for NYGM users. I told you that your NYGM fatigue model will NOT work with SH3Cmdr because SH3Cmdr will not recognise the COMPARTMENT block changes. That's why it was not included, as I was awaiting your response. I never received one. It is not my call to make decisions for your mod, and there's not much more I can do than raise it with you.

Further:
- You have included a Miscellaneous file. SH3Cmdr no longer uses a Miscellaneous file;
- You have used "older" data files for making your changes. I provided you with access to the "final" files (which included Hemisent's NYGM compatibility fix) to make your adjustments to.

There is every chance that NYGM users will still have problems using the files you have provided, especially if they select the NYGM fatigue model.

To quote a phrase, this is exactly what bothers me. And why I do not provide fixes for other mods in SH3Cmdr.

So the fixes do NOT work? My game still freezes up on me with these "compatibility fixes". ANything else i can do?? Should i not install certain files but keep others?

If you're up to it, try lurker's suggestion on the previous page of this thread. It should work.

Everyone, please post any NYGM/SH3Cmdr compatibility problems on the appropriate NYGM thread. Only the NYGM team can "officially" fix the problem.

I would guess not if you use lurker's fix. Otherwise, you'll have to wait for NYGM to post a working fix.

But I've never used NYGM, so I am really not the best person to help you.

Yes. I do NOT recommend NYGM users download SH3Cmdr R2.6 until the NYGM team creates compatible files. Alternatively, you can try lurker's fix which should work.

Sorry guys, there wasn't much else I could do.

Lurker is right on. I checked out the files in question and it's simply a cut and paste affar. Gets a bit confusing but it really is quite simple.

A question for you on multiple installs.
Here's a reply from awhile ago which I pulled from my notes-

"1. Install SH3 and v1.4b patch.
2. Copy the clean SH3 installation and paste it. Rename the new "Copy of SilentHunterIII" to "SilentHunterIII - GW".
3. Copy the clean SH3 installation and paste it. Rename the new "Copy of SilentHunterIII" to "SilentHunterIII - NYGM".
4. Install GW into "SilentHunterIII - GW".
5. Install NYGM into "SilentHunterIII - NYGM".

Test each mod by running the SH3.exe file direct from each folder (or create shortcuts on your desktop to each). If you run SH3Cmdr, you can alternatively use it to manage your different SH3 installations.

Then, after you've formulated your own opinion, simply delete the modded SH3 that you don't like, or keep both and play whichever one at whichever time takes your fancy."

I've had dual installs before with no problems One for playing and one for testing but only used Commander to launch the played version.
Now that I have NYGM & GW I'd like to get Commander to launch & manage both.

I currently have "SilentHunterIII - NYGM" & "SilentHunterIII - GW"
both are working ok seperately but I have a single install of Commander 2.6
when I go to launch I get a window showing the file path and a message "Cannot find sh3.exe in this folder. Please tell where Silent Hunter III is installed."
I'm not understanding something here. Could you please help me with this?
Since Commander has a modified set of files in the CFG folder for NYGM only
(as per previous Lurker post) does this mean I need two installs of Commander also(I like this idea). If so how is this accomplished?

OK. What you need to do is create two *new* shortcuts to SH3Cmdr.exe, with the /l: switch added. For example,

"C:\<Path>\SH3 Commander\SH3Cmdr.exe" /l:"C:\<InstallPath>\SilentHunterIII - NYGM"

"C:\<Path>\SH3 Commander\SH3Cmdr.exe" /l:"C:\<InstallPath>\SilentHunterIII - GW"

This forces SH3Cmdr to use these locations rather than use the one stored in the Registry (ie the original installation path).

To create the shortcuts, just right click somewhere on your desktop, select New|Shortcut and enter the location as above, press Next then enter a suitable name, then press Finish. Done.

Then, all you need do is click the icon for the version of SH3 that you want to play. SH3Cmdr does the rest.

ONE warning though. If you run "SH3 - NYGM" then want to run "SH3 - GW" afterwards, you MUST first rollback SH3 - NYGM, otherwise, when you run SH3 - GW, you will cross pollenate it with NYGM files. For example:

ALWAYS
-Run SH3Cmdr NYGM shortcut
-Play game
-ROLLBACK SH3Cmdr NYGM
-Run SH3Cmdr GW shortcut
-Play game
-ROLLBACK SH3Cmdr GW

NEVER
-Run SH3Cmdr NYGM shortcut
-Play game
-Run SH3Cmdr GW shortcut
-Play game

Alternatively, you can install (or copy) SH3Cmdr again to a different location. Then, you can point one shortcut to SH3Cmdr installation #1, and the other to SH3Cmdr installation #2. Then you will not have this rollback problem. For example:

"C:\<Path>\SH3 Commander Copy 1\SH3Cmdr.exe" /l:"C:\<InstallPath>\SilentHunterIII - NYGM"

"C:\<Path>\SH3 Commander Copy 2\SH3Cmdr.exe" /l:"C:\<InstallPath>\SilentHunterIII - GW"

The problem with this approach though is that your SH3Cmdr.ini files will get out of sync with each other. But that's prolly less of a problem than your whole game getting out of sync!

But I'd only recommend this second approach if you think the first approach will cause problems for you.

Actually, SH3Cmdr does not overwrite Basic.cfg. It updates specific values within, but does not replace the whole file.

If you are finding that your changes to Basic.cfg are being overwritten, then it's highly likely that you didn't rollback SH3Cmdr prior to editing your Basic.cfg file. You must rollback SH3Cmdr first. Then you can apply your torpedo loadout changes either directly to Basic.cfg, or perhaps preferably to SH3Cmdr's Static settings.cfg file. This approach is preferred, simply as it ensures that your settings are always used, regardless of whatever mods you install at any given time.

Don't know about the clothes aspect, as the Combined Skin Pack (CSP) includes ship skins only.

Unzipping the CSP into SH3Cmdr will not overwrite any existing SH3Cmdr files.

Open Randomised events.cfg in SH3Cmdr's Cfg folder. Look for the lines, near the top:

;----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[0:data\Cfg\SIM.CFG]

JS in your opion what is best to do what i have done running SH3C with GW and delete this lines of random envents or should i leave it and use what i had. what exactly does deleating it do.........................for game exsperance have you deleated your lines or have you left them as is.......................

JScones

Well, I don't actually play the game!

However, if the GW instructions recommend changing the value to 15, then that's what I'd do. And the easiest way to do that is simply to delete the three lines.

But, if fully deleting the lines worries you, then simply make this change instead:

;----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[0:data\Cfg\SIM.CFG]
AI Detection|Lost contact time=I|15|15|Y ;Randomises the time Escorts spend looking for you after losing contact, in minutes

Note the default 45 value has been changed to 15. This will force SH3Cmdr to insert 15 everytime it runs.

You could alternative just add a semicolon to the front of the lines, thus:

;----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
;[0:data\Cfg\SIM.CFG]
;AI Detection|Lost contact time=I|15|15|Y ;Randomises the time Escorts spend looking for you after losing contact, in minutes

which will force SH3Cmdr to ignore the line altogether.

Either way will work fine.

FWIW, even though I don't actively play SH3, the first thing I do is personalise all SH3Cmdr's Cfg files to my tastes. And that's the aim of SH3Cmdr - to provide you with total control over the changes that it makes.

Just a quick question wondering if I'm understanding correctly. Currently have about 1/3 of basic.cfg pasted into basic changes and make my "tweaks" in Commander. So now if I want to continue using Commander for simple Basic.cfg changes I have to use this format:
;[Name of the file including the full path from the "data\" level]*
;ApplyToPeriod=<Start date as YYYYMMDD>|<End date as YYYYMMDD>**
;<SectionName>|<KeyName>=<Setting> for text files OR

So every single line will need to be prefaced as in your stock lines? :o

MEDALS_CREW|SunkInPatrol=60000; TONNAGE, front clasp

What does this line mean?: ;*Prefix each repeated section name with #: to ensure that the name is unique.

No. Just add your lines to the Basic.cfg block that is already there. The text before the | symbol is the section name, and the text after is the keyname. These will be the only changes required.

So, for example, if you want to change the nbdaysinbase value to 44, then just add this line to the current Basic.cfg block in Static settings.cfg (end, middle, beginning, doesn't matter):

TIME|NbDaysInBase=44

Use this method to add all of your changes.

Without the ApplyToPeriod setting, all changes will be used throughout the entire war, which I guess is what you want.

Anyway, here's an example:

;----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[data\Cfg\Basic.cfg]
;The below lines allow player to set U-boat emblem at start of career
RENOWN|FirstRankRenown=100
RENOWN|SecondRankRenown=350

;The below lines provide more realistic promotions (sooner) and medals (longer)
;within the context of the SH3 game engine
PLAYER_RENOWN|RankLevel0=0; SCORE
PLAYER_RENOWN|RankLevel1=1499; SCORE
PLAYER_RENOWN|RankLevel2=7999; SCORE
PLAYER_RENOWN|RankLevel3=15999; SCORE
PLAYER_RENOWN|MedalSettings0=0.25
PLAYER_RENOWN|MedalSettings1=0.5
PLAYER_RENOWN|MedalSettings2=1
PLAYER_RENOWN|MedalScore0=3000;2 class, SCORE
PLAYER_RENOWN|MedalScore1=6000;1 class, SCORE
PLAYER_RENOWN|MedalScore2=20000; knight, SCORE
PLAYER_RENOWN|MedalScore3=30000; oak leaves, SCORE
PLAYER_RENOWN|MedalScore4=40000;swords, SCORE
PLAYER_RENOWN|MedalScore5=50000;diamonds, SCORE
PLAYER_RENOWN|MedalScore6=90000;all, SCORE

;The below lines increase the number of badges available for awarding and defers
;receipt of clasp and GC until later in the war, to closer reflect actuality
MEDALS_CREW|RenownStep=50; RENOWN, u-boat badge
MEDALS_CREW|SunkInPatrol=60000; TONNAGE, front clasp
MEDALS_CREW|SunkInPatrolGerman=60000; TONNAGE, GC

;My personalised settings
TIME|NbDaysInBase=44
etc etc

;----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi,

I am in the process of installing GW and SH Commander2.6
I am fairlay new to this game.

Now since it is the first time that I will be doing that, do I have to do anything special (been reading posts lately in that regards) like deleting lines or doing any ''rollback'' thing.

I didn't start a career yet or didn't saved anything game/sceanrios.

So can I just install GW adn install after SH Commander 2.6 with any surprises?

Thank You very much

HEMISENT

-ROLLBACK SH3Cmdr NYGM
-Run SH3Cmdr GW shortcut
-Play game
-ROLLBACK SH3Cmdr GW

NEVER
-Run SH3Cmdr NYGM shortcut
-Play game
-Run SH3Cmdr GW shortcut
-Play game

Alternatively, you can install (or copy) SH3Cmdr again to a different location. Then, you can point one shortcut to SH3Cmdr installation #1, and the other to SH3Cmdr installation #2. Then you will not have this rollback problem. For example:

"C:\<Path>\SH3 Commander Copy 1\SH3Cmdr.exe" /l:"C:\<InstallPath>\SilentHunterIII - NYGM"

"C:\<Path>\SH3 Commander Copy 2\SH3Cmdr.exe" /l:"C:\<InstallPath>\SilentHunterIII - GW"

The problem with this approach though is that your SH3Cmdr.ini files will get out of sync with each other. But that's prolly less of a problem than your whole game getting out of sync!

But I'd only recommend this second approach if you think the first approach will cause problems for you.

Thanks, ended up having to make two seperate SH3 Commanders due to NYGM. Working like a champ once I got the path format correct.

What will be the problem with the ini.files. What should I expect?

*Note. For those using Commander 2.6 along with the latest NYGM version.

SH3 Commander comes with the Thermal Layers mod (introduced in Commander 2.5) works fine/no issues with NYGM

SH3 Commander 2.6 comes with the Malfunctions & Sabotage mods available as a merged set or individually(see the read me)

In both of these mods there is are randomized files dealing with the crash depths. The purpose of this was to simulate a problem when ordering a crash dive. There are a number of mechanical and human reasons for a boat heading down out of control. jammed dive planes, stuck/jammed valves, toilet being incorrectly flushed etc. These occurrences are not common but they do exist.

As previously discussed in depth on other posts when you interrupt a crash dive in NYGM it nullifies the NYGM anti hummingbird effect. The player has two options:
1. let the boat continue to it's depth whatever it happens to be and therefore the anti-hummingbird effect will stay as advertized.
2. Interrupt the crash dive as there obviously is something wrong with the boat (you have no idea what depth the boat will finally settle at)and make a decision to monitor the depth under keel very closely. The anti-hummingbird effect will be voided for you but then again your boat does have a problem and it's up to the Captain and crew to compensate.

Thanks to Observer for finding this one and bringing it to my attention during the final testing stages of testing. I've been testing this area particularly in numerous campaign patrols and find no other problems or concerns.

The Sabotage/Malfunctions files don't "break" anything but they do nullify the anti-humming bird effect for that single patrol only.

You should be fine. If you have never used SH3Cmdr, you can ignore the rollback step.

Simply:
a) install SH3
b) install the SH3 v1.4b patch
c) install GW1.1a
d) install SH3Cmdr
e) read the SH3Cmdr Help and FAQ files
f) OPTIONAL STEP: if you have NEVER ran SH3 before, you must run it first to create the save game folder structure
g) run SH3Cmdr

Well, you can install it without screwing your current career up, but please don't install it over your current copy of SH3Cmdr. Follow the steps outlined in http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=276510&postcount=15 (from page 1 of this thread).

Thanks, ended up having to make two seperate SH3 Commanders due to NYGM. Working like a champ once I got the path format correct.

What will be the problem with the ini.files. What should I expect?
Well, if you keep your careers totally exclusive, there won't be any problems. Just remember that "Oblt Hemi" is your GW campaign and "ObLt Sent" is your NYGM campaign.

It's only an issue if you go into your NYGM installation of SH3Cmdr and try to create a Personnel File for your GW Commander - the details will not be as up-to-date as if you had gone into your GW installation of SH3Cmdr and created a Personnel File for your GW Commander. That's all.

But this is nothing compared to the rollback hassles you have now avoided.

Thanks for the help with CSP. I guess I asked two questions in one sentence. Can you explain how to include various officer skins into SH3 Commander so they appear randomly? In one of your posts a few months ago you mentioned putting different skins in a random folder and they could even change mid patrol, after saving of course. Is this even possible? Thanks again.
Yes it is possible. You add them to the Random file structure. That is...

C:\Games\SH3 Commander\Random\0\Date\19390901\data\Crew\Body\Bo dy01\OFF_TGA\<01_OFF_Body01_D.tga etc files>
C:\Games\SH3 Commander\Random\1\Date\19390901\data\Crew\Body\Bo dy01\OFF_TGA\<01_OFF_Body01_D.tga etc files>
C:\Games\SH3 Commander\Random\2\Date\19390901\data\Crew\Body\Bo dy01\OFF_TGA\<01_OFF_Body01_D.tga etc files>

repeat as many times as desired (you can add more random folders). Each Random folder should include all skins (ie 01 through 04 tga files), but it doesn't really matter. In fact, not doing so will provide even more variation.

If you want you can also change the skins based on date within each Random folder, ie adding
C:\Games\SH3 Commander\Random\0\Date\19410101\data\Crew\Body\Bo dy01\OFF_TGA\<01_OFF_Body01_D.tga etc files>

means that IF SH3Cmdr selects 0 as the random folder, one set of skins will be used UP TO 31/12/1940 and another set of skins FROM 1/1/1941. In essence, this doubles your randomisation chances. If you want, you could have daily changes of uniforms, but I'd suggest that as a tad bit excessive!

Play around with it and you'll see that you can do many things to vary your game from patrol to patrol.

Hello,

is there any chance I can exceed 100 days when setting days spent in base?

Or another way to adjust starting date of next patrol?

I missed one W@W patrol and now its 150 days to spend in base so that the date is corresponding.

Thanks

I'll think you'll find he simply means size wise. Onkel Neals' edict being 120H x 400W (http://www.subsim.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=48024&highlight=signature+image+size+limit or http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=81920 if you can't access the first thread).

I've been struggling to figure out what and where to post my problem. I guess this is as good as place as any.

I can't explain my problem without turning it into some long story, so let me skip that and get down to what I want to do.

I'm going to reinstall everything including GW1.1a, Commander 2.6 and skinpack, and weather mod.

I'd like to keep saves if possible so I can start where I last left off in port. Remind me of what I need to save.

I believe I need to save the SH3 folder in "My documents" and the .ini file in Commander. Anything else like Tutorial stuff so I don't have to train again?

I guess this isn't the right thread, but since all my problems started after using 2.6, it's here for now.

P.S. I'm not blaming 2.6. I'm sure it was something else.

I've read the discussions prior to release about what was being done with the sabatage portion of 2.6, and I know how to turn it on if I choose, but I'm not real good at understanding all the settings that concern said subject.

I read where sabotage doesn't break anything. Does that mean I can't fix any problems from sabotage? I don't care to go back to the .cfg file again to try to understand unless I have to. Is sabotage permanently crippling? Is there anything I can do about it in patrol or in port during gameplay?

Sorry if I missed the explanation.

Edit: Wish I had seen a link, but I think I found the mods thread. That should cover it I think.

Assuming you understand that Commander may or may not choose to issue you a "loaded" file each time you launch the game.
Also, your odds of receiving a loaded file depend on the year and the boat.

There are a number of different files in Sabotage/Malfunctions, they range between minor, serious and major/critical.
Some of the problems you may encounter are minor annoyances a few examples are: Attack scope takes a few extra seconds to clear up. Schnorkel takes a bit longer to extend/retract, Battery range slightly reduced etc. These are examples of problems that can be dealt with and there's no reason to scrub the mission.

On the other hand there are versions of these same files that are borderline or serious such as: Attack scope blurred + Obs scope blurred- both clear up and are fully operational, Schnorkel takes a number of minutes to raise but comes up and is fully operational, Battery range reduced by around 40% but still borderline servicable, Flank speed reduced somewhat but again is borderline.

Some examples of critical problems are: Attack scope stays blurred you must rely on Obs scope and that too takes awhile to clear, Battery range reduced by around 80%, Schnorkel takes effort to raise (1+hour) and is best left in the raised position for the duration. Flak guns jam after a single clip is fired. Flank & full speed settings are greatly reduced etc.
These and other files would likely cause the Captain to order the boat back to base asap.

As for "repairing" the problems yourself-yes and no. Commander has the ability to make a given file valid for the duration of the mission or to allow its value to change each time it is launched. There are certain files which will stay with you for the duration of the mission and others that will resolve themselves upon re-launching. The problem you have is that you can save/exit/re-launch and perhaps "repair" a problem but Commander may give you something far worse to deal with. It's a crap shoot.

I've found that the "critical" files are seldom seen but they are out there.

The Sabotage/Malfunctions files do not "Break" any current mod in use, however should you interrupt the crash dive sequence you will nullify the anti-hummingbird effect of NYGM(if your running NYGM). There are numerous posts about this elsewhere.

Hope this helps.

Did you originally d/l and install the .7z version of SH3Cmdr R2.3? If so, you won't have an entry in the Add/Remove list. An entry only appears when you install using the installer version.

If you originally d/l the .7z version and unzipped it to your harddrive, all you need to do is, as Sailor Steve stated, rollback SH3Cmdr then manually delete the folder you installed it into (but keeping SH3Cmdr.ini if you want to retain your Commander history data).

You can then install the latest version over the top.

Re the missing crew voices, have you read the SH3Cmdr FAQ? There's one FAQ that may be a possible solution for you:

Q: Since using SH3 Commander I can no longer hear speech or most sound effects. What sound files does SH3 Commander overwrite?
A: SH3 Commander does not overwrite any game sound files. This problem will occur if you set the "Character animations", "Sound effects" and/or "Particle rendering" Time Compression events to 1. Reset each event back to the default value and try again (a Rollback is not sufficient to reset these settings). If your problem persists, scrutinise any new mods that you have installed since you last had full sound.

If it's not that, then I can't help you. I mean, provided you have text entries in **_menu.txt between 810 and 817, I wouldn't even know *how* to remove ship spotted messages and certainly haven't made such changes in R2.6 - just look at the R2.6 Release Notes!

Alternatively, perhaps you are running TC too high? It may interfere.

I had somthing interesting happen last night when I was playing SHIII. I am playing in 1940 in the 2nd flottilla and was beginning to wonder when my base will change to Lorent (sic). Well to make a long story short I started ran commander liike normal and clicked the launch SHIII button and I got a pop up I have not got before "Base Changed to Lorent". I thought well this is cool, however when I get to the mission screen I am still starting in Whillhaven (sic) and an returning to Whillhaven. I thought well OK whatever, saved game and restarted back to the same patrol, this time I get null patrol in the SH3 commander screen and the mission orders have changed to start in Whillhaven and return to Lorent with a Null patrol grid, however the clipboard at the side menu (don't know the corrcect term) under misin goals still gives me a destination of DH12 and not a null patrol. I was just wondering what is going on.

Hi all, Noob here.

Got a question about random career length.

It says in the SH3Comm help file that the randomisation occurs every time you launch from SH3Comm except when in mid patrol. Does that mean if I start a career with this option checked and it decides to retire me after say 6 patrols, when I get back to base after 1st patrol I must uncheck this option before launching again or it will AGAIN randomly assign me to retire after say 8 patrols? If this is the case if the box is not unchecked after first launch I would never get retired correctly.

Right?

 My brain hurts! I honestly don't understand what you are saying or asking, so I will just explain the feature. Simply, with the option selected, EVERY TIME you press "Launch SH3!" when you are DOCKED (that is, NOT mid-patrol), SH3Cmdr performs a small calculation to determine whether you should be retired. The calculation is based on the number of patrols completed and the number of days spent at sea AT THE TIME OF CALCULATION. If the result of the calculation is true, you are retired. Conversely, if false, SH3 loads and the game continues as usual.

The calculation is ONLY performed AFTER you press the "Launch SH3!" button and ONLY if you are DOCKED. It is performed for that ONE time only and repeated fresh EVERY time you press the "Launch SH3!" button.

The (user adjustable) lookup table that controls this feature can be found in SH3 options.cfg.

I hope this helps.

I originally thought that if checked and launched it would assign a SET number of patrols, or SET number of days at sea and retire you when reached. If left checked and launched again it would REASSIGN a new SET number.

Example: Launch new career and get a max 7 patrol career. Finish patrol and relaunch and get a new value assigned like 10 patrols. etc.

In short, I thought I had to uncheck it on subsequent launches or get assigned a new random career length.

I think I understand now. Leave it checked and it will eventually retire me.

Thanks for the fast response and the great mod.

Oh, I see. No, the feature doesn't work that way. It doesn't "preset" retirement (although I kinda like the "fate" feeling), it determines it exclusively at the beginning of each new patrol. If the random numbers fall your way, your career could go well beyond 16 patrols, otherwise, you may get an average of 8 or so.

I am receiving medals much sooner in my careers than I should. For example, after 5 patrols in a type II in which I sunk 7 ships for a total of 32,367 tons, I was awarded a Knight's Cross! I'm not sure if this is due to NYGM Tonnage War or maybe because I use SH3 Commander with Tonnage War. Any idea how I could correct this, maybe by altering something in the SH3 Commander Cfg file?

Yes, to ensure compatibility with NYGM, I had to "remove" the SH3Cmdr PLAYER_RENOWN settings. SH3Cmdr used the original RUb settings, which provided more realistic* promotions (sooner - yes, sometimes history can work in the player's favour! ;)) and medals (longer - well, one out of two).

You can get the "traditional" SH3Cmdr settings back by opening "Static settings.cfg" and removing the semicolons from the begining of the 14 PLAYER_RENOWN lines. Note though, that I do not know what impact this will have in NYGM.

Yes, launch SH3 *every* time via SH3Cmdr.

Here's another question about launching:

Having launched SH3 through SH3 Commander and played a couple of single missions for practice, do I have to back out and re-launch using "Set up for a new career" if I then want to start a new career? (I failed to do this yesterday, but I don't want to start my first mission over...)

You don't have to start new careers via SH3Cmdr, but doing so does provide more flexibility, including the ability to:
- include international characters in your Commander's name
- start your career in any month of the war (assuming you have a Flotilla mod installed which adds 1944 and 1945 start dates)
- commence with experienced crew
- select any u-boat type and variation available to the selected Flotilla at the selected date
- set your u-boat number
- set your first patrol grid

However, SH3Cmdr will happily recognise and work with careers started directly in SH3.

Basically it means your crew is fatigued ( tired ) after 8 hours and then have to be rotated to rest areas - its to simulate shifts and watches
24hr means they only need to go to rest area once a day

Thanks, but can you tell me how the GW mod works in terms of fatigue/compression rules? Am I right that fatigue is on there even for higher levels of TC?

* over stock SH3.

I made this change, but the result was receiving Knight's Cross and everything beyond (Oak Leaves, Diamonds, etc) on my second patrol on which I sunk 12,000 tons (apparently the unpredictable impact in NYGM you mention above). So I put the semicolons back in front of those 14 lines. Can I edit those figures you have for medals and promotions? For example, in the line "
PLAYER_RENOWN|MedalScore2=20000; knight, SCORE" would raising 20000 to say 30000 result in the knight's cross being awarded later?

You can, although you may need to consult the NYGM team to determine impacts.

Due primarily to a loss of enjoyment in reading flame wars and bait posts, I will not be visiting these forums as much as I used to. This thread will prolly be the only thread that I review.

I will be setting up an alternative support mechanism for SH3Cmdr which will allow SH3Cmdr users continued access to support (by rights I should have my own support mechanism outside of Subsim, but Neal has been such a great host that I never found it necessary). In the meantime, however, if you have a problem and cannot find the solution in either the SH3Cmdr Help or SH3Cmdr FAQ files, or this thread, then please post here and either I, or I'm sure other experienced SH3Cmdr users, will assist.

Alternatively, SH3Cmdr supporters (ie those that have made a donation) can ensure premium support by PM'ing me or emailling me at the address outlined in the SH3Cmdr Help file. SH3Cmdr supporters will continue to receive the highest level of support.

Please note that this is not an indication that I am ceasing support for SH3Cmdr, just that the support channel will change. Users who are on my notified list will be kept abreast of all changes.

I'm sure though, that some paths will again cross at a later date. ;)

How do I change my patrol grid fro NULL to actual position on map after docking in friendly port or Milk cow.I try to do that ,quit the game,in Commander change it to C28 but when I start the game again it's NULL again.Anyone? Thanks

I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong, but I think the SH3Patrol mod fixes that for you.

I am wondering if there is a way to change the default folder address in SH3 Commander so it can update a different folder within my SH3 directory and prehaps update two folders at the same time ? The reason being is that I am going to try getting NYGM Tonnage war mod working, but I still wish to play with the Grey Wolves mod in my other SH3 folder. Thanks for any help.

Edit: Am I on your list, JScones ? ;)

If you have two or more SH3 installations, and one of them contains NYGM, then the best option may be to have two installations of SH3Cmdr. I recommend this as if you only had one installation of SH3Cmdr then you'd need to swap the NYGM files in and out depending on what modded version of SH3 you want to play.

However, regardless of whether you have one installation of SH3Cmdr or more, the way to "point" it to a unique installation of SH3 is simply to create a new shortcut on your desktop (or edit the existing one), pointing to SH3Cmdr.exe, but with /l:"C:\<installPath>\SilentHunterIII - NYGM" (for example) added to the end. Thus you could end up with multiple shortcuts with the following shoretcuts, all pointing to different SH3 installations:

"C:\SH3 Commander\SH3Cmdr.exe" /l:"C:\<installPath>\SilentHunterIII - GW"
"C:\SH3 Commander\SH3Cmdr.exe" /l:"C:\<installPath>\SilentHunterIII - NYGM"
"C:\SH3 Commander\SH3Cmdr.exe" /l:"C:\<installPath>\SilentHunterIII - RUB"

Yep, this is exactly what I did per your advice and it works like a dream. My problem now is that I cannot get TT's Mini tweaker to direct itself to different paths. I tried this method but it won't work.
NYGM has changed certain values so the mini tweaker has to be changed back and forth for NYGM files to GW files.

Thanks again Jaesen for all that you've brought to the community. Please don't disappear completely. Your right about the childish behaviour - the maturity level is definately on the downswing lately. Too bad as this is one of the greatest sites out there.

I have a question about thermal layers future in sh3 commander.

Always when I run sh3 by sh3 commander the min height values in ai_sensors.dat stay at default -300. Is this ok?

Does the values schould change in every run of commander or not?

Assuming that you have not manually edited any of the "Randomised events.cfg" files, there's a 50% chance that you will get an adjusted value. Thus it is not unusual to get a series of stock SH3 values.

I see, so how could I change that to etc. 75%?? By editing "Randomised events.cfg"?

JScones

I see, so how could I change that to etc. 75%?? By editing "Randomised events.cfg"?
Open *each* "Randomised events*.cfg" file and look for the lines:

[0:data\Library\AI_Sensors.dat]
;Randomly adjusts active/passive listening device values to simulate the impact of thermal layers - by Hemisent
;Only MinHeight values are changed
ChooseFrom=10
RndMidPat=1

You'll see that underneath are 5 blocks of settings, labelled 0 to 4. The easiest way is to change the ChooseFrom value to 7 to set the chance to 71% (ie 5 "blocks of settings" divided by 7); 6 to set the chance to 83% (ie 5 divided by 6) or 8 to set the chance to 63% (ie 5 divided by 8).

Alternatively, you can create your own set of randomised values by:
1) copying the block:
4_x0470=-270
4_x05FC=-260
4_x0784=-275
4_x090C=-270
4_x0A94=-268
4_x0C20=-275
4_x0DAC=-265
4_x0F38=-263
4_x10C4=-265
4_x124C=-260
4_x142B=-257
4_x160A=-255
4_x17ED=-263
4_x19D0=-260
4_x1BB3=-255
4_x1D96=-253
2) pasting immediately below
3) changing each 4_ to 5_
4) changing the settings to whatever you want
5) repeating the above as many times as you like

So, adding one new set of values (ie total of 6 sets) and leaving the ChooseFrom value at ten will give you a 60% chance, adding two sets and leaving the ChooseFrom value at ten will give you a 70% chance and so on. You can also change the ChooseFrom value, so that, for example, by adding one extra set of values and changing ChooseFrom to 6, you will provide a 100% chance (6/6) of getting a different set of values each time.

The choice is yours.

I hope this is clear.

Oops - I'm well into my first patrol after upgrading to SH3 Commander 2.6, and everything seems to be going well so far - but I just realized I forgot to add back in the SH3 Commander skin pack that I had added in to my previous installation.

I'm downloading it now (since I'm not sure how old the one I used last time was, even if I could find it again), but I'm wondering whether this is something I can add in mid-patrol or whether I should wait till I get back to port. Also, I'm not sure exactly how this SH3 Commander skin pack relates to whatever is going on with GW and/or NYGM (I'm still using GW 1.0 now, but planning to upgrade to the latest GW or NYGM (not sure which I'll try next yet) probably before my next patrol) - is there any real dependency between those things so that I'm screwing something up or missing something big by not having the skin pack installed at the moment (like, does it affect whether certain ship types show up in the game or anything like that), or is just some additional variety so that I might be seeing a little more variety in the way some ships types look if/when I do run into them in the game?

I'm mostly picking off single tankers and merchants in the Caribbean with my Type IXB on this patrol, so I'm not seeing any big convoys lately where the variety would be real obvious anyway, but I was liking what I was seeing in my previous Atlantic convoy battles with my Type VIIB and the older versions of SH3 Commander I was using so I'd like to get this pack re-installed as soon as it makes sense to do so.

Thanks for this great program

As the skin pack consists solely of tga files, it shouldn't matter. However, the cautious side of me would wait until when next in port; I don't trust SH3 at all with mid-patrol saves!

It just provides alternate ship skins (which vary according to career date) for certain already-installed ship types. It doesn't adjust ship availability, frequency etc.

Just a quick one JScones,

In the readyme doc for GW is a paragraph referring to Compatibilities with SH3 Commander and recommends to "leave or set the 'Lost contact time' to 15 mins in order to maintain the integrity of the destroyer aggression modifications" and says to refer to the SH3 Commander Help file for further Instructions.

This I cannot find. Is there a setting as such in SH3 Cmdr? It doesn't show in 2.6.

1. Open "Randomised events.cfg", located under the "\SH3 Commander\Cfg" folder
2. Look for the lines:
;----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[0:data\Cfg\SIM.CFG]
AI Detection|Lost contact time=I|15|45|Y ;Randomises the time Escorts spend looking for you after losing contact, in minutes
3. EITHER a) delete the three lines or b) change the third line to:
AI Detection|Lost contact time=I|15|15|Y ;Randomises the time Escorts spend looking for you after losing contact, in minutes
4. Save and close
5. Repeat for EACH "Randomised events_19*.cfg" file

FWIW I play GW but haven't made the suggested change and I haven't noticed anything adverse.

This thread is the only one that I am subscribed to for now, so post your q here and generally I'll respond within 12 hours (usually upon receipt of Subsim's "Reply to post" email). It's just that I don't go through the forums as much at the moment so will miss anything posted elsewhere.

Other alternatives are PM or email (after reading the SH3Cmdr FAQ and Help files of course). Or, depending on the q, you could post in the main Mods Workshop forum as I'm sure others will will be able to help.

Open "\SH3 Commander\Cfg\SH3 options.cfg" and overtype either the German or American rank labels with your Russian ones. Then make sure that you have selected the same language under SH3Cmdr's SH3 Options screen (Rank Translations option on the Text Settings screen). That's it.

If you weren't using SH3Cmdr, then you'd make the changes directly to SH3's **_menu.txt file.

For some reason with Commander 2.6 my days in base always remains at 1
regardless of what I set it for. Just completed a mission ending Sept 1 and start of next mission is Sept 2 yet days in base says 31. I'm just starting Wolves At War and this sure would make life easier. I've tried this on a number of different campaign test missions - no change/mission starts next day.

JScones

If your status is "In other base before..." then SH3Cmdr automatically sets the daysinbase value to 1 (although the actual value may increase if you have damage). This reflects the fact that the "other" base will either be a milk cow or friendly base (SH3 doesn't tell them apart).

SH3Cmdr should happily use your preferred setting if the status is "In home base before...", that is, if you are docked at your home base.

However, whilst SH3Cmdr determines your location automatically, you can manually toggle the status by clicking on it. So:

"In other base before..." = 1 day
"In home base before..." = your preferred SH3Cmdr setting (or whatever is already in the game if neither "number of days spent in base" option has been selected in SH3Cmdr)

Setting the status manually overrides SH3Cmdr's automatic determination.

Have you followed the instructions outlined in SH3Cmdr Help.html? That is:
To use the Crew Manager, select a crewman. Then:
- to award medals, badges or qualifications, click an image in the "Available Medals, Badges and Qualifications" panel and drag and drop into the corresponding "Medals", "Badges" or "Qualifications" panels;
- to promote or demote, choose a rank from the scroll list;
- to change the Commander's name, overtype the current name or press the 'RN' button to create a random Germanic name.

Click 'Apply' to save the changes. You can also build a crew list, saving the details of your crew and their accomplishments to an html file.
Note that SH3Cmdr does not follow the awarding limitations imposed by SH3. Whilst SH3 "allows" you a certain number of medals and one qualification per patrol, SH3Cmdr lets *you* decide what and how much you want to award.

Also note that you can still award SH3 alloted medals and quals from within SH3.

can someone tell me how i can have 2 installs of SH commander R2.6 so i can have one for my greywolves mod and one for the NYGM_2.0 mod,i know theres a link somewhere in the forums explaining how to do these installs.

Assuming you know how to make dual installs of SHIII
One is labeled SHIII-NYGM
One is labelled SHIII-GW
OK. What you need to do is create two *new* shortcuts to SH3Cmdr.exe, with the /l: switch added. For example,

"C:\<Path>\SH3 Commander\SH3Cmdr.exe" /l:"C:\<InstallPath>\SilentHunterIII - NYGM"

"C:\<Path>\SH3 Commander\SH3Cmdr.exe" /l:"C:\<InstallPath>\SilentHunterIII - GW"

This forces SH3Cmdr to use these locations rather than use the one stored in the Registry (ie the original installation path).

To create the shortcuts, just right click somewhere on your desktop, select New|Shortcut and enter the location as above, press Next then enter a suitable name, then press Finish. Done.

Then, all you need do is click the icon for the version of SH3 that you want to play. SH3Cmdr does the rest.

ONE warning though. If you run "SH3 - NYGM" then want to run "SH3 - GW" afterwards, you MUST first rollback SH3 - NYGM, otherwise, when you run SH3 - GW, you will cross pollenate it with NYGM files. For example:

ALWAYS
-Run SH3Cmdr NYGM shortcut
-Play game
-ROLLBACK SH3Cmdr NYGM
-Run SH3Cmdr GW shortcut
-Play game
-ROLLBACK SH3Cmdr GW(Bizarre things happen if you do not rollback)
NEVER
-Run SH3Cmdr NYGM shortcut
-Play game
-Run SH3Cmdr GW shortcut
-Play game

Alternatively, you can install (or copy) SH3Cmdr again to a different location. Then, you can point one shortcut to SH3Cmdr installation #1, and the other to SH3Cmdr installation #2. Then you will not have this rollback problem. For example:
"C:\<Path>\SH3 Commander Copy 1\SH3Cmdr.exe" /l:"C:\<InstallPath>\SilentHunterIII - NYGM"
"C:\<Path>\SH3 Commander Copy 2\SH3Cmdr.exe" /l:"C:\<InstallPath>\SilentHunterIII - GW"
C:\PROGRAM FILES\UBISOFT\SILENTHUNTERIII-GW

The problem with this approach though is that your SH3Cmdr.ini files will get out of sync with each other. But that's prolly less of a problem than your whole game getting out of sync!
But I'd only recommend this second approach if you think the first approach will cause problems for you.

but I'm wondering whether this is something I can add in mid-patrol or whether I should wait till I get back to port.

No, do not try and install mods during mid patrol. You will lose your career. I've found that out the hard way 4 times already. Wait until you're "In Base" and do it then. Or if you haven't done much in your patrol, you can delete it back to the last "In Base" you have and install it.

I was lucky and saved the 4th career from a backup of SHIII, SHIII folder in My Documents, and the SHIII Commander folder. It's a smart thing to make a backup of them every once in awhile anyways. ;)

Can I ask a question about problems with SH3 Commander in here? Yes? Good, as I have one.

The problem is as follows:
Suddenly SH3-Comander won't load SH3 anymore. The reason is, that it can't write into the NSS_Uboat7c.cfg and ends the launch-prrocess with an according error-message. When I look into the file's properties it says "read only". I then uncheck this option and try to launch SH3 again and again the error occures because the "read only"-status has mysteriousely returned... I tried several combinations of unchecking and restarting/rebooting but nothing worked so far. As I said, the error suddenly appeared out of nowhere.

So, what can I do?

Until someone with the real answer shows up, you may want to try this - be sure to do a "search" on your PC for that particular file name, and then make sure you change all instances of the file to uncheck "read only" - it may be that SH3 Commander is copying a different file than the one you changed from some backup location, overwriting the one you changed with one that's still "read only"

Just a thought - I'm not sure if SH3 Commander really does this, but I've had a very similar problem with some other program/application doing something like this, so it may be worth a try.

Good luck!

Are you rolling back SH3Cmdr before removing the r/o attrib? If not, then when SH3Cmdr next rolls back, it will simply return the backed up copy of the file in question, complete with r/o attrib. That's most likely your problem.

Unfortunately, some mods (I don't know which ones) include r/o files. Silly me never foresaw this possibility (perhaps so obvious in hindsight) as stock SH3 files are not r/o and I didn't imagine that modders would add it!

There are also two other possibilities which you may like to pursue:
1. some a/v software "inoculates" files by adding the r/o attrib. Maybe yours is one of them?
2. you must be logged in as a full administrator (this is generally the case, but if you have an account for you and one for anyone else in your house, this may not be the case).

Yes, that was exactly my problem. I just unchecked the r/o (so that's the abbreviation for it?) in SH3-Comm's !BACKUP-folder and everythings alright again. Just don't ask me, how the r/o-status got there in the first way. I installed my last mod almost a month ago and it always worked till yesterday.
However, it works again and I'm happy.
Thank you.

Hi, could you let me know where the r/o is in the !BACKUP-folder so I can uncheck it please ? Can't seem to find it.

No. Rollback first, then you won't have any files in the !BACKUP folder to worry about!

Hi JScones,
With SH3C
when you select "correct u-boat avalibility dates" what base or flotila would give you the latest version of u-boats ie XX1 etc.

I know they are date related,im currently in late 1943 and have a 1XC/40 working out of Lorient.

Is there a better base than this to get better upgrade ?or does this flotila give me the whole range till the wars end.

if i unselect the u-boat avalibilty dates can i get the XX1 sooner or when its due hold on to it longer.......

thanks for your help.;)

I can't imagine why (remember, it's NYGM 2.2 that is being released, not SH3Cmdr). As the NYGM team has not approached me with any compatibility concerns, I'd expect NYGM 2.2 to come with whatever files are needed to maintain compatibility between the two products.

But this is a question you should direct to the NYGM team.

A question about the Seasonal Wave Height option:

I've read the Help and FAQ --- and, really, this option is fairly self-explanatory --- but I'm not really sure that it's working: I'm on a December patrol, out near the Shetlands, and there's no wind, no cloud cover, and the ocean is smooth as glass. What governs this option?

(Oh, I'm also running GW1.1 --- will this effect it somehow?)

Wave height does not affect the weather, it's the other way around.

In stock SH3, 0 m/s wind speed gives a glassy surface whereas 15 m/s wind speed gives the greatest wave height of (from memory) just under 4m.

Problem is, 15 m/s is the max wind speed modelled in the game, regardless of season or theatre.

SH3Cmdr expands on a mod created by TimeTraveller, where greater wind speeds are simulated through a visual increase in wave height.

With the SH3Cmdr option selected, during the summer months, stock SH3 wave height values are used. However, in the winter months, wave heights are just under double the stock value, to simulate harsher winter conditions, or in other words, wind speeds of greater than 15 m/s.

When the weather next turns foul, you should notice the difference.

"Sonar Destroyed" is unrelated to the "Stbd Engine Destroyed" problem which was something that SH3Cmdr R2.5 uncovered, but subsequently repaired (pardon the pun) in R2.6.

If you search the forum you'll find more info on the Sonar Destroyed message. It's NOT related to SH3Cmdr.

Likewise, search the forum and you'll find a number of posts explaining in full detail how to remove the malfunction feature (NOTE: sabotage is NOT included by default in SH3Cmdr, players must manually enable the sabotage effects by following the instructions in the readme file). Here's just one of a few posts that should help you... http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?p=293158#post293158

Just an FYI for anyone trying to find info on the events files.

I tried doing a search on the boards for "randomized" and got zero hits. Then I realized that even though this is the correct spelling of the word, I must do a search for "randomised" as that's how the files in SH3 Commander were labeled from the beginning and also how they are referenced.

I'm on my first patrol now that I've installed SH3 Commander 2.6 and the first thing I've noticed is the GW "Messages" have stopped completely and the weather is stuck at "perfect" (5 knots, clear sky, no fog, etc.). I was also sent to the same patrol grid as my last assignment. Not sure if this is a coincidence or not but something's fishy here. In all my campaigns and patrols, I have never enjoyed perfect weather from Wilhelmshaven to the AM grid via north of Scapa Flow...ever.

I realise that "Randomized" might be the correct spelling in the USA, but... ;)

Yes, mere coincidence.

a) SH3Cmdr doesn't interfere with game messages or their appearance;
b) SH3Cmdr doesn't interfere with the weather settings (it does run SH3Weather if it finds it, but that's as close to tinkering with the weather as it gets);
c) SH3Cmdr doesn't automatically determine or set patrol grids. Indeed, in this instance SH3 would have already chosen the patrol grid before you even ran SH3Cmdr! Actually, repeated patrol grids is not that uncommon. If your previous patrol ended in the same month as the current patrol ended, you *may* get a duplicate grid as SH3 obtains a grid destination relative to the month of the last finished patrol, as opposed to the month of the next patrol, which is what you'd kinda expect (thanks to Rubini for this find). And with any randomisation, repeats are possible.

Greetings JScones, What is the possibility of implementing a field that enables the uboat to return or transit to a different port. I was basically thinking that when a Flotille moves to a different location, uboats could actually transit from one base to the new base or whilst on patrol then return to the new port.

Hi all Kaleuns,
sorry 4 my bad English, but this is my 1st post over here, usually I post to a Italian

SHIII forum.

This is the matter:
I was in my 8th patrol in the middle of the summer in 1940 leading my VIIB Uboot.

The BdU assigned me to patrol the AN79 grid!?! Is this normal?
I usually don't discuss the order, but this order is like a suicide.

So... when I was in the proximity of the AN79 grid, I got a mine or a net or both of them

and I had one guy death and severe damage all over (both the periscope, the radio and the

sonar etc.).

I came back to willelmhaven and after a month I've started 4 a new patrol (grid DH79).

Several miles out of Spain coast I intercepted a convoy; I had 6 torpedos left, 2 of them

reached a medium tanker; 4 torpedoes missed, the tanker didn't sink.

Run out of torpedoes, I decided to resupply at the Bessel in Vigo.

After the resupply (restarting SHIII commander ver. 2.6) I got the follow message.

"lieutenant SR mau---- to report immediately to kiel for reassignement to training duties".
and "relinquish command of U21 to your exec".

Then SHIII commander informed me "if you are getting 'itchy feet' sitting behind a desk,

you can return to active duty and continue your career"

So... what do I have to do?
I accept to spend time (1 month? 2 months?) training myself again, I hope I won't lose my

grade and I agree to restart from Kiel with a IIA as well.

Pls suggest me the right way to come back in the opration area.

Best Wishes.

mau----

The difficulty in sinking the ships is indeed based on Grew Wolves or NYGM, both of those mods make things more difficult.

The "behind the desk" thing you got was the "Simulate a realistic career length" option, where after so many patrols you're sent to train new recruits or work a desk job. You can simply click on your Status and get back into active duty. Or leave the realistic career length option unchecked and patrol till you die. :)

If you pick "return to duty" you should keep your same boat and crew.

FYI, in the next week or so I intend releasing a very minor maintenance fix (R2.6.1). It will be nothing more than a tweaking of a few internal aspects, for example:

- Read-only attribute will automatically be removed on any file that SH3 Commander modifies, as opposed to the current error message and abort.
- Number of days spent in base can be set between 0 and 2075 (ie the length of the war in Europe), as opposed to the current 100 day upper limit (I have no idea where that came from!).
- Title bar will display the full path to the SH3 installation, to better support and recognise multiple SH3 installations.
- Double clicking the "Existing careers..." entry will no longer collapse the careers list. This is just a minor thing that annoyed me.
- Clicking the "Existing careers..." entry will display the full path to the SH3 save folder. There's a reason for this which will become apparent over the next week or so as well.
- "before patrol 1" careers will be excluded from the careers list, because these careers don't actually exist!
- Will check if SH3 is running and advise the user to exit SH3 first, to avoid I/O errors and other file conflicts.

One thing I want to stress is that this release will NOT break any current compatibilities with ANY mod. For current SH3Cmdr users it will just be a one file release which will overwrite the current SH3Cmdr.exe.

BTW, I have changed a bit of the code which *may* make SH3Cmdr backward compatible with Win98 and ME. If anyone running SH3 on Win98 or ME (with IE4 or greater installed) wants to test this latest SH3Cmdr, pls let me know.

Hi JS i noticed you have a add on skins for SH3 what are they............
and are they for Sh3cmder 2.6..or is it an older file
It's primarily an automated version of iambecomelife's early, mid and late ship skins. Add them to SH3Cmdr and the ship skins of certain ship types will change throughout the war.

My only concern is that they may overwrite any skins you already have installed, so whilst you'll get the benefit of "morphing" skins, you may lose the skins you already have in the game for the corresponding ship types. That I have no control over, nor can I offer advice.

Full inclusion list...
- MERCHANT VARIETY PACK by Iambecomelife
Early War Edition containing ~100 new skins (15 per ship type) and Mid-Late War Edition containing ~50 new skins

- AUXILLARY BRITISH CRUISER SKIN PACK by Type941 (5 new NAXC skins)
01. Gray hull, new repainted condition, funnel and superstructure,
02. Black hull, weathered condition, black funnel (HMS Jervis Bay), white superstructure
03. Black hull, yellow funnel with black lining, white superstructure
04. Black hull, rusty, very weathered, light tan funnel, slightly weathered white superstruture
05. Mountbatten Pink camouflage in late war variation. Darker hull, lighter superstructure and funnel
06. Default: (dark green hull with gray superstructure)
07. Default: (olive green hull with gray superstructure)
08. Default: (light green hull with dirty tan superstructure)

- PASSENGER LINERS SKIN PACK by Type941 (4 new NPPL_ skins)
11. All white hull/superstucture with tan funnel color (very common 1939 look)
12. Black hull with white lining on the upper part connecting with superstructure, yellow funnel w/ black lining
13. Gray hull, funnel and superstructure, looks best in the late stages of war when ships carried full armament
14. Lavender mauve grey hull with white lining joining with white superstructure/orange funnels. Paint scheme of Union Castle line
15. Default: White hull with blue lining, blue funnel with white cross
16. Default: Black hull with red funnel

- TRANSPORTS SKIN PACK by Type941 (7 new NPTR skins)
16. Black hull, yellow funnel w/ black lining, white superstruture, gray masts
17. White hull slightly weathered, yellow funnel w/ black bands & lining, white superstruture, tan masts
18. White hull weathered, light tan funnel, white superstruture, gray masts
19. White hull weathered, red funnel w/ black lining, white superstruture, gray masts
20. Lavender mauve grey hull and superstructures, orange funnel w/ black lining, white superstructure, tan masts. Paint scheme of Union Castle line
21. Black hull very weathered and rusty, light tan funnel, white superstruture, gray masts
22. Black hull weathered, black funnel, white superstruture, gray masts

- CAPITAL SHIP PAINT SCHEMES by Type941 with additional tweaks by Syxx_Killer (7 new skins in total)
1. Three schemes for the Bismarck (the sea trials scheme which Bismarck used until March 1941; the Operation Rheinubung scheme which was used from March until May 1941; and the final scheme which was used when the Bismarck sailed into the Atlantic)
2. Two 1941 schemes for the Prinz Eugen

Re the above, I would like a few people to test the latest release. Whilst it's been well tested on more "mainstream" systems (ie Windows XP with IE6), I'd like to have peace of mind that it works on other systems and configurations. I am particularly after people running SH3/SH3Cmdr under any of the following environments:
-Windows ME, Windows 98 or Windows 2000 or
-Without Internet Explorer installed

All you'll need to do is replace your current SH3Cmdr.exe with the new one I'll send you, and if it opens OK, all is sweet.

Pls PM me and I'll email you the link. Please only PM if you are a confident SH3Cmdr user. :)

If I can get a few testers over the next day or so, and assuming that all works fine, R2.6.1 will be released in the next few days.

I downloaded some Splashscreens for the Intro and Map loading screens, and am curious if they can be randomized. I saw this same kind of question where I downloaded these Splashscreens(here in the workshop somewhere), and have asked this question myself, and the answer was the same. They both said they think SH3 CMDR can do it, but I've read the Read Me, the FAQ , and this thread, and can't find anything about Splashscreen Randomization.

I know I can use JSGME, but don't want to have to open JSGME up everytime before I start SH3.

Also JScones , I've left you a PM at UBI about JSGME installation problems(not me, other UBI users). I was hoping you could get VikingGrandad to post a JSGME sticky for you.

Release 2.6.1 of SH3 Commander is now available!

- Read-only attribute now automatically removed from any file that SH3 Commander modifies
- Number of days spent in base can now be between 0 and 2075 (ie the length of the war in Europe)
- Title bar now displays the full path to the SH3 installation (for easier recognition)
- Double clicking the "Existing careers..." entry no longer collapses the careers list
- Now supports save folder names other than the default "SH3" (will become apparent later)
- Clicking the "Existing careers..." entry now displays the full path to the SH3 save folder (for easier recognition)
- Now excludes "before patrol 1" careers from the careers list (such careers don't actually exist)
- Now checks if SH3 is running and advises user to exit SH3 first

As you can see, this is a maintenance release, containing a number of minor internal changes.

DOWNLOAD INSTRUCTIONS
CURRENT SH3CMDR R2.6 USERS
1. Either use SH3 Commander's "Check for updates" feature to download the update or download direct from here (http://www.users.on.net/~jscones/software/products/SH3Cmdr261.zip).
2. Open SH3 Commander and press the "Rollback SH3" button.
3. Exit SH3 Commander.
4. Unzip the contents of SH3Cmdr261.zip into your SH3 Commander folder, overwriting the current files. As only one core SH3 Commander file is updated, you do NOT need to reinstall any other files. Just simply unzip and play!

NEW SH3CMDR USERS
1. Download the full version from here (http://www.users.on.net/~jscones/software/products/SH3Cmdr261.exe) and follow the installation instructions.

No, it hasn't been unstickied, I found it in
Kaleun1961's guide to installing mods (includes step-by-step screenshots) (http://forums.ubi.com/groupee/forums/a/tpc/f/857101043/m/3031058373) as a subdirectory to New to SH3? Patches, mods, tools, guides, online teams, etc. (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/857101043/m/7261080164)
I wish I could have found it last week while getting carpal tunnel trying to get 2 people hooked up with JSGME. I appreciate your help, and I also appreciate how you answer all questions from everyone.

One more question for you( I hope I don't sound greedy), but there are some recent problems with people not getting ship names on the patrol log. I have them, but some new SH3 Cmdr user are having trouble. There is also a new thread simply titled Ship Names over at UBI.

Thanks again JScones, keep up the good work. BTW, I put the Intro screens in the Date folder, instead of Random, works just fine.

I assume that the affected players read the SH3Cmdr FAQ, particularly Q: How do I get real ship names in my Patrol Logs? [EDIT: I've now read the "Ship Names?" thread to which you refer. Proves I should never assume...]

The other reason why ship names FOR SOME SHIPS won't show up in the log is if the ship class hasn't been added to SH3Cmdr's "Ship names.cfg" file. Essentially, this means ANY new ship created since about January this year (apart from two I added for NYGM in R2.6).

I've recently spoken to BBW and expect that this will be corrected somewhat in GWX - it should include an up-to-date version of the file including entries for all the new ships that GWX has added. Still not 100% exhaustive, but still much better than now.

I'm about to upgrade from 2.5 to 2.6 and have uninstalled the previous version. I do wish to keep a current WaW career running and am aware that I should retain the SH3 Commander .ini file which still remains after the uninstall. However, after uninstalling 2.5, I notice that there are several other sub-folders also remaining. They are 'ibackup' (empty), 'Date' (232 mb), 'Nightclub' (25kb I think) and 'Personnel Files'. Should I manually delete these folders, only leaving the 'ini file or will this cause problems with my current career? Thanks.

Did you install the Combined Ship Pack at some stage? Its files will be left behind by the SH3Cmdr uninstaller.

Anyway, essentially delete everything but "<path>\SH3 Commander\SH3Cmdr.ini".

I could use a bit of help figuring out why SC 2.6 and NYGM 2.2 wont work on my setup. I installed SC to a separate dir.

I deleted the random cfg files from sC3 and installed the optional sh3 commander files from NYGM 2.2. But I cannot load any game or start a career. The game simply stalls on the load screen with the red bar about 1/3 full. I have to alt-ctrl-del the process to get out of that. If I roll back SH3C, I can play NYGM again.

I did indeed install the CSP but I don't see any of its files remaining. In any case, thanks, I will delete everything from the folder except the .ini file. Then I will install 2.6 and reinstall the Combined Ship Pack. After that, it's installing the newly released NYGM 2.2 which includes three files to make it compatible with 2.6... fingers crossed that all goes smoothly.

I have multiple installs (GW + NYGM) both have correct shortcuts for JSGME + SH3C (using the l: switch) however each time I load the respective SH3C I am asked for the location of the sh3.exe.

This setup works, it's just a small grievance each time to have to point to the correct install. Is it possible that the path name is too long??:hmm: Is there a solution?

Note - due to the recommended change to cfg files for NYGM, I infact have two installs of SH3C and use MULTISH3 to ensure no crossover.

Can anyone help?

JScones

You're only asked for the path if SH3Cmdr cannot find sh3.exe in the path that you've specified, so I would suggest that your /l links are incorrect. Please post them so I can have a look.

Target
"C:\Program Files\SH3 Commander - GW\SH3Cmdr.exe" /l:"C\Program Files\Ubisoft\Silent HunterIII - GW"

I do hope it's not a really stupid error on my part:oops:

With the "Silent HunterIII - GW" part above, did you manually add the space in "Silent HunterIII" or did you just add " - GW" to your install folder. The default game install is "silenthunteriii" with no spaces.

Well spotted Kylania, that was my mistake however, I still does not work.

The path is now .....\SilentHunterIII - GW

I have just noticed that the folder is called SilentHunterIII -GW but in the properties box for SH3C shortcut you can only type SilentHunterlll - GW.

Possible Cause?:hmm:

im gettin a windows error each time i close or alt tab out of SH3 along with some nasty CTD's. im tryin to narrow down what is causing this as ive had nothing but probs with my pc over the last 2 weeks.

my SH3 config is

fresh install SH3
patch 1.4
jsg mod installer
nygm mod + sub commander files
SH3 weather mod
sub commander 2.61
sub commader skins pack

ive also got my own sound file which is modded and normally add this in last.
is this the correct order of doing things and should i roll back before i add in my sound file?
the roll back thingy is a bit confusing

thanx in advance

Well, you need to have SH3Cmdr installed *before* you install the NYGM SH3Cmdr files, otherwise, where are you installing them to?

Your sound file may also be contributing. Try without it.

The "roll back thingy" need not be confusing - just remember to roll back SH3Cmdr PRIOR TO MAKING ANY changes to your SH3 installation - this includes adding or removing ANY mods or even SH3 itself. In other words, if you plan on altering the content of the SH3 folder in any way (either manually or via JSGME), roll back first!

Not rolling back SH3Cmdr is the biggest contributor to game instability and CTDs.

JScones, I just tried to launch SH3 Cmdr, and I got an error saying "Invalid argument to date encode". When I click on Close, SH3 Cmdr opens up, but my potrait is gone and so is all my other info. I clicked on "Click For Available Actions" and I get same error message.

Should I launch SH3 without SH3 Cmdr, do a patrol, then try again. I just started a new patrol(28th), saved game, used SH3 Gen, reloaded, saved again at patrol grid, moved on and I had a CTD with the error report thingy that I can Send Report or Don't Send. Of course I don't send unless it is a Stop Error. When I tried to restart , I got this Invalid Cmdr error.

BTW, just for kicks, I clicked on Launch SH3, and I got a new error saying ( " is not a valid integer value.) Then when I close the error, SH3 Cmdr starts to launch SH3, but when messages at the bottom get to Applying selected SH3 options, it just sits there.

What is going on ? Has this ever been reported before ?

Thanks
//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
EDIT : I just answered my own question, I pulled up to the Bessel, resupplied(this is launching SH3 without Cmdr) , then exited game. When I opened Cmdr, everything was back to normal.

That was a strange little mishap

Ummm, no, malfunctions tend to cripple equipment, not supercharge it. :hmm:

A quick check of the malfunction files shows decreased speed effects modelled only.

Question regarding the Map that SubCommander 2.6.1 uses when selecting grid options for your next patrol. Where is the map located and is it possible to change that image? I have a Grid map from ingame that I would like to use.

Thanks!
