View Full Version : Stock water transparancy
Is there any way of getting this back while playing Grey Wolves? I really like to watch the dc`s go by me using free view. (yeah, its cheating, etc)
Get yourself TimeTravellers mini tweaker programm and his tweak files.
Install programm, point it to your SH3 folder.
Open the scene_dat.txt file.
Go to the section called underwater.
Change the value "UnderwaterFogEnd" to a higher number.
Guess with "18" youīll get max underwater visibility, personally iīm using 12 or 14.
Mini tweaker programm will create a backup file, which has to be moved out of the game folder or deleted.
This step is essential to make the change work!
Hope this was helpful, please excuse my english.
Thanks, mate!
But I have no scene_dat.txt, only scene_dat?

Hi stabiz,
launch MiniTweaker, press 'Load Tweak File', point to 'scene.dat.txt' and load it...
Greetz,
SSB
Thanks, mate!

Should be the right one!
Maybe your OS is not displaying file extensions (.txt .exe. .zip .rar...)
edit:
confirmed :D if you select "donīt display file extensions for known file types"
or whatever itīs called in english windows version in your explorer options, the mini tweaker does not display the extension either. But youīve chosen the right file, donīt worry!
Yeah, but I dont see that file in the tweaker, just in the normal windows-window. (lol, what a sentence)
Because of Grey Wolves?
do you have the tweak files installed? Itīs a seperate download and then they have to copied/extracted to the tweakers programm directory (into the "tweak files" folder inside the programm folder).
In case you didnt get the tweaker to work, here is a gw scene.dat (with sergbutos moon reflections included) where i set the transparency to 16.
http://rapidshare.de/files/25048761/scene.rar.html
But it would be more satisfying to get the tweaker to work, you can do funny stuff with it...
Itīs the 16KM version!!!
Wow, you guys are great ... Thanks, gammel, will try this tomorrow, too tired right now. (Just saw Collateral again, great flic, despite having Cruise in it)
Thanks again, just imagine customer support being as brilliant as this community.

Players using SH3Cmdr can ignore all of the above - SH3Cmdr provides a simple interface to adjust the water transparency setting.
Note that the setting can be between 0 (opaque) and 20 (transparent). 18 is the vanilla SH3 setting.
Strange stuff, this, cause wiyh the tweak files I get to access the scene_dat.txt, but there is nothing in it called "underwater", so I cant change underwaterfogend.
However, I changed the wateropacity to 18. I`ll hvae a go now to see if it worked.
Thanks againg, sombreros!
Edit: Nope, I propably need to change that fogend somehow. Starting to feel stupid here.

Youīll make it! No need to feel stupid.
:rotfl:Nevermind, I found the drop-down window now.
Thanks for all help!

:rotfl:There you go, thats just what I figured out. Thanks, mate!
Ok I have tried to find this scene_dat.txt but it my version (Clean US SH3 patched with GW 1.1a)
it doesn't exist so where can I manually go and find the file because none of you have mentioned the actual address of the file (ex: C:\Stuff\SH3\ etc..)
so where do I go?

Open SH3 minitweaker, click "Load Tweak File", scroll right until you see Scene.dat, click on that.

Tried it but once again the file had evaded me.

It is there for sure :p
Silenthunter3/data/Scene.dat
donīt forget to point the tweaker to your games directory first and double check if youīve installed the tweak files correctly (seperate download). The tweak files has to be copied / extracted in the "TweakFiles" folder of the tweaker programms install directory.
Yeah, the tweak files does not come with the tweaker. I feel like mentioning that once more, since that was where I srewed up.

Hi Hybris... i have not good english but i will try to be didactic.
The file you need to modify is Scene.dat, it is inside
C:\Archivos de programa\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII\data
But it is an hexadecimal file, you need to edit it with an hexeditor, then, TimeTraveller made one of the most useful programs made for SH3, the Minitweaker, (together with SH3 Commander, Mod Enabler, SH3 Unpacker, SH3 Color Inspector and others)
With Minitweaker you can manage that file and otehr hexagesimal files to easy....
But to do it you need first to loadup a "template" for that determined file.... this template is wich one has the extension .txt ( scene_dat.txt, not the file you will modify.)
Then you need to have the minitweaker program installed, and you must to have in the correct folder all the templates needed to modify most f the game file.
So, when you want to modify one.... you open the Minitweaker, load up the template for the corresponding file, in this case, scene_dat.txt into the minitweaker program, make the changes and save, when you save, you modified the scene.dat file.
The program create a back up file, called "Copy of XXXX ", you must to remove it from the original folder.
You can use too the SH3 Commander too to modify the visibility underwater, its another great program.
But remember when you modify some file, may be you need to modify the SH3 Commander files too, i note some times this program take hands on its own stored files and make non sense of chnges, i cant explain it wll, may be JCones may help with this.
Another way is to use a Hexeditor program and make changes manually.....
I hope in my bad english it can clarify some things for you.....

Yes. If you run SH3Cmdr then you need to understand what changes SH3Cmdr makes to game files (simply read the Help file). Because, if you go changing a setting in a game file when SH3Cmdr also changes the same setting (ie water clarity in scene.dat), your changes will simply be overwritten by SH3Cmdr.
So, the simple solution is, if SH3Cmdr changes it, adjust it via SH3Cmdr.
And remember to ALWAYS rollback SH3Cmdr before making ANY changes to ANY game files.

Many thanks for help, JCones  , the readme may be clear for a person with a good english level :know: .
I note time ago in the past, tweaking the DDs and DDs detection capacity, game make non sense of changes, finally i arrive to a good point, and some day when update your program, uninstall it and reinstall the new version... behaviour of DDs change completelly ...
Surprised by this i uninstall the program, and then i have too much know about how it works.
I magine... i can use the Thermal Layers Mod due to this fact...
Then the secret is roll back the program settings ? Or may be if we need to make constant changes for a mod test... uninstall completelly the program and instal it when mod is finished and changes are definitive ?
Many thanks for help...

Not quite sure what you're asking here.

You only ever need to uninstall SH3Cmdr when you are upgrading it. At all other times, all you need to do is press the "Rollback SH3" button. Doing this returns the files that SH3Cmdr backed up when you last launched SH3 back into SH3. ALWAYS rollback SH3Cmdr BEFORE changing ANY SH3 game files.
In so far as tweaking SH3 settings, how you do it is up to you. Whilst you are tweaking and testing, you may want to do it sans SH3Cmdr. Then, when you have settled on suitable settings, you can port them across into the relevant SH3Cmdr cfg file(s).
Personally, I tweak and test with SH3Cmdr, so that I only need to change one set of files which will ensure that the settings I want are ALWAYS copied into SH3Cmdr regardless of what mods I may install. And by using the /nolaunch switch, I can make sure that SH3Cmdr is copying into SH3 the settings as expected.
Anyway, however you feel comfortable doing it basically, it's up to you. But either way rollback SH3Cmdr prior to changing any SH3 game files.
Oh, I nearly forgot, ALWAYS rollback SH3Cmdr BEFORE changing ANY SH3 game files. ;)

No... :D i was not asking, i was telling what happened to me, when i uninstall SH3 Commander, the DDs behaviour change a lot in my installation, they become rabid dogs.....so i take know about SH3 Commander take hands over some "strategic" files, may be Sim.cfg and AI Sensors.
Then the secret is roll back the program settings ? Or may be if we need to make constant changes for a mod test... uninstall completelly the program and instal it when mod is finished and changes are definitive ?

Many thanks for all the explanation, i want to be able to use the Thermal Layers Mod, but its redme is a little bit complex, because i use my own AI Sensors, and need to build my personalizd version, and i was not in know how your program works....

The Thermal Layers changes are stored in the Randomised events.cfg files. The settings adjust AI_Sensors.dat.
Hemisent is the Thermal Layers guru. I'm sure he'll offer any assistance needed.
I got it to work thanks all for your help.

Gammel,
Thank you for your 16x16km version of the scene.dat. It did the trick for me and works prefectly on my rig. It is just the right balance of visibility for me, and does not seem to have bad effects on any other settings.
