Being a reletive newcomer to submarine warfare I looked with great expectation towards purchasing Silent Hunter 3 and I was not let down. The simulation is, in my opinion, excellent. After glancing through the various forums on submarine matters I discovered many "mods" to improve the basic sim. First try out was RUb1.45 (installed through JSGME), this really opened my eyes to the possibilities now available with SH3. On to the next one, can you guess, NYGM Tonnage with its optional MODS. Once again, fab!! As I previously said, I am a reletive newcomer to this game and the above two MODs have only been tried out for a short time but both were terrific. Now to my latest, The Grey Wolves v1.1a. No bother installing, or so I thought, everything seemed to function o/k.
My first departure was from Kiel so I tried out the navigators course reconning for the Kiel canal only to find that I was given a 5 cornered patrol course, tried it again (from the start position) only to get the same results, 5 cornered patrol course. Am I suppose to "self" plot or manually navigate the Kiel canal ? unlike NYGM where a plotting facility is available.
Got into my first "enemy" contact only to find that it was indeed a "contact", no description of what type of contact as in the previous MODs. However when I came across a UBoat in transit the contact showed me that it was a u-boat and what type. Not to worry, maybe I thought the Museum chapter would show me the descriptions etc. for floating metal etc. Not to be. In my version of the museum there is no description of the floating models at all, only "contact". I also noticed this occurs also with the UZO and periscope. Is this deliberate to The Grey Wolves or a mistake. As a veteran U-Boat Kptn the recognition should come as second nature but I am only a poor wee laddie trying to learn the game.
All this apart may I say that throughout my searches in the forums the general trend would appear to be one of friendly, helpfull and knowledgable sub cptns who are always willing to help, and the amount of work put in by the MOD guys is something to be wondered at, keep up the good work lads and thanks for all your wonderfull mod contributions.
After all this bilge bull maybe someone can give me an answer for my questions
