I have been playing sh 3 vanilla game with just the 1.4b patch now for about 6 months. I am finally thinking about installing a mod. I have heard a lot of good things about the grey wolves mod and the NYGM Mod. Which mod do you recommend? What are the pluses and minuses of each mod. Help !!

Grey wolves is biased for graphics/immersion, and requires slightly higher hardware specs than NYGM, which is biased for realism. I use NYGM, because I'm after realism, and because I have crappy hardware. They are both excellent achievements in modding. What sort of player are you?

Well, I have been playing the arcade style so long anything will be a plus for me. I have a descent computer... added a couple of 512 memory chips cause I was getting some crashes during gameplay and havent had anymore problems. I guess a little eyecandy wouldnt hurt. So I guess my answer would be a little of both.

Then Grey Wolves would be a good choice. GW 1.1a came out today:

Depends what you are looking for. NYGM follows the footsteps of Real Uboat Mod and concentrates on making the vanilla game as close to realistic (very hard) as possible with Agressive and capable escorts who are able to bring hell upon thee for hours and hours and you really need to learn evasive maneuvres and most importantly avoid being spotted. Sinking ships is not based on vanilla "health point" system where you can sink a boat shooting at same spot of the ship, but flooding different sections of ships and it also has quite many graphic mods in it.

GW I cannot say anything as I have never tried it but the screenshot I have seen I can say it is the mod for best graphical xperience. Also have great addons like sunken ships blocking the enrtance to Scapa flow etc.

Both these mods have Kiel kanal and AFAIK suez kanal and in NYGM there is a tool for auto plotting through Kiel kanal.

I bet the best thing is to study the threads and think it over what siuts you the best. As my rig is somewhat oldish and also my way of playing hunts for realism I chose NYGM as there are some graph mods in GW that most likely will slow down my computer too much as it already is suffering on certain occations.

both mods should be fantastic which ever you choose..and will be lightyears better comparing to Vanilla game.
Prost!

Oh Man !!

I am running NYGM 2.01 and enjoy it, the games slows down but in a good way, running at 1024 TC all the to and from your mision area is now a thing of the past and I kinda like it that way. But now GW is starting to interest me as I also enjoy the fact it is a "game" and I like a little eye candy now and again.

I posted in another post on this board that a comparison chart for the two mods would be a great help to all involved in this amazing game.

I'll keep reading and learing I D/L the newest GW's and keep it on my system and may try to post a Newbs review on them and my findings.

FYI, NYGM TW has this as well.

My advice. Try them both and pick the one that suits your style. Realize though before you give NYGM TW a try that it will be a very big step change in difficulty over vanilla.

I was tried the both, GW 1.1 and NYGM TW 2.0, and I find that for me the Tonnage War 2.0 is better, GW is very strong mod too and realistic I must said, but such things like Crew management, Anti-humming bird, better sensors for spotting ships, textures inside u-boat and much more is on the side of NYGM TW. But, I think that the players could make very good choice between this two really great mods, and I would like to thank the both teams for the great work.

OK. Like Observer said, the best thing to do is try both for yourself. The easiest way to do this is:

1. Install SH3 and v1.4b patch.
2. Copy the clean SH3 installation and paste it. Rename the new "Copy of SilentHunterIII" to "SilentHunterIII - GW".
3. Copy the clean SH3 installation and paste it. Rename the new "Copy of SilentHunterIII" to "SilentHunterIII - NYGM".
4. Install GW into "SilentHunterIII - GW".
5. Install NYGM into "SilentHunterIII - NYGM".

Test each mod by running the SH3.exe file direct from each folder (or create shortcuts on your desktop to each). If you run SH3Cmdr, you can alternatively use it to manage your different SH3 installations.

Then, after you've formulated your own opinion, simply delete the modded SH3 that you don't like, or keep both and play whichever one at whichever time takes your fancy.

***Just remember to keep any created careers exclusive to each mod.

Exactly the same thing I was wondering myself. I'm not very fond of extreme realism...I'm more attracted to game diversity and graphic effects. I do not play with manual targeting system, and I always let the weapon officer to do the identifying and math jobs. In my case ( I think my realism option is 53% or smth) do you think that GW would be the beste choice for me ? Does it have options to check or unceck when installed ? What should I check in order for the game not to become too difficult to play ?

Thank you very much.

Again the misconception of GW being graphics/sound only needs to be squashed.

GW is just as much into realism as is NYGM,they are just going about it in a different viewpoint than NYGM is.

It will all come down to your personal preferences as to which you use.No one can say one way or another which is better, because neither one is "better" than the other. Each one tackles the same thing in different ways.So the only way is to try both of them and make your decision based on those trials.

Your able to alter the realism in both mods to things that suit your needs, but I assume they will play better with higher settings. Once again best to try both and see which ones suits your needs best. I feel that GW may suit your graphic needs a bit more than NYGM.

Good luck and be sure to post your findings

An earlier post noted that they approach the realism differently--what or how specifically?

I use GW 1.1 and I'm very satisfied. GW is good balance between realism and playability, not only based on graphic and sound effects as many players said.
Try both, GW and NYGM, if you want to know which of them choose.
