Well I tried to follow in the path of FuBar and failed horribly. Not that anything I could paint would match up his but i figured i would try and make my own boat skin. Though I'm new to SH3 I'm not new to using paint programs to paint things. I have painted alot of planes in CFS2 and also different cars in Nascar 2003. CFS2 planes used a texture called DXT and Nascar 2003 used TGA files. The TGA files are the same used in SH3 so i see so far. I have read through many post and so far have found that 2 programs should work very well for unpacking and repacking a dat file. Here is where i stand so far.
downloaded the files for the following programs
SH3 Unpacker
Chessmaster 10
Installed the programs to the computer.
Executed a MASS extract of all DAT in the SH3 dirrectory .
Opened up the DAT for the Uboatof choice (IXD2)
In this DAT file there are two TGA.
Selected the TGA for edit.
Using the PSP 7.0 program I altered the image using layers.
After the editing process I saved the file in two formats. The first format was PSP this was the master copy that saved all the layers. The second format was the .TGA. This file is the merged file that is used in the SH3 Dat file. The reason for both saves is simple. If you only save the merged file then you can not simply erase all the changes as you could with the layered image (master)
That being said i then made sure that the file name was exactly the same and tried to use the repack option in SH3 Unpacker program. I first hit the button that said repack (something like that) then selected the new file that i made saved as the exact name as the original, then pressed ok. I got an error message stating that the file was invalid revert back to original. I then repeated the process and got a new error message stating that i did not have access to this file or permission. I figured that maybe it was a glitch in the program and so not to be fooled or foiled I deceided to try the other program called Chessmaster 10. I opened the program and selected the file in the SH3 directory that had the DAT file I wanted and clicked open. Again i got an error message stating that there was not enough memory to open this DAT.
:damn: :damn: So now im stuck:damn: :damn:
I need help as im not sure what i did that was wrong. I made sure the file name was the same exact caps and spacing and all. The only thing i can think of is that i read somewhere that the file size has to be the same. If thats the case i dont know how to get my file the same as the original. As adding textures would only increase the file size. I'm looking for any help at all with this issue. I know i have seen some great looking skins on the web.
If someone could tell me what im doing wrong and possibly walk me through this it would be great. So far I have checked the SH3 website forums and this forum and have not had a responce from anyone.
Thanks again for any help.
I look forward to getting back into the water currently i had a major computer failure and have had to rebuild most of my DELL computer. So as of now the U-66 is sitting in dry dock undergoing extensive repairs.
