Sorry if this has been asked before .I tried a seach in the Forum but couldn't find anything.Problem is using the latest SH3 Commander I've noticed in my last 2 careers that the names of the crew that SH3 Commander says I have, doesn't match up with the crew names in the game.Any ideas anyone?

There is another problem with SH3 Commander...when you start your carreer in a type II it gets the Uboat numbers wrong (too high) even though on the dropdown list it has the right U- range...which is a bummer for realism.

I just tried running 2 careers and I found that in the second career after the first save the crew list and game crews matched but after the second save I had the same crew list for both careers.:-?

There's two aspects to your post:

1. The use of "high" numbers when starting a career in a IIA
This is deliberate.

Beery would provide the best explanation, but basically the numbers used for IIAs are actually IIBs (I'll point out that IID numbers are not affected). This is to reflect the fact that the six IIAs spent very little time at the front (again, Beery would explain his rationale better, but he isn't around anymore). Unfortunately, Beery could never crack the sub-naming in SH3, otherwise the IIA would have been rebadged as a IIB long ago. Personally, for me it is less realistic to think I am sailing around England in a IIA. Limiting the sub numbers to 1 through 6 would annoy me more than simply seeing a label titled "IIA" in the SH3 menu screens (IIRC RUb changed the IIA specs to be the same as IIB - I don't know whether the changes have cascaded to other mods). But each to their own...if you really must have a random IIA number, then either:
a) simply role a dice before starting your career and set in SH3Cmdr whatever number comes up, or,
b) delete ...\SH3 Commander\U-boat\IIA\data\Roster\German\Submarine\SSTypeIIA.cf g

No need to get all flustered by it - SH3Cmdr isn't forcing you to use any specific numbers. You can use whatever number you want. BUT READ BELOW BECAUSE SH3 THINKS DIFFERENTLY...

2. The difference between an SH3Cmdr listed sub number and one allocated by SH3
SH3Cmdr limits the available U-boat numbers by Flotilla. So, for example, if you selected 1 Flotilla and wanted a IID, you would not get U-148, U-151 or U-152 as selectable numbers in the drop down list (likewise, as it currently stands, you would not get U-120 or U-121 as selectable if you selected IIA).

SH3 isn't this smart - if you did NOT set your U-boat number via SH3Cmdr, then you could very easily get one of these numbers as SH3 just picks one randomly from a flat file list. So the way around this problem is to simply select or enter your starting U-boat number in SH3Cmdr and thus take the creation out of SH3 hands.

Are you pre or mid-first patrol?

JScones.
Sorry for bothering you. I think I know what the problem was and it was my own fault.I was going into the SH3 Commander opening screen selecting ' Click for available actions' then 'Manage your crew' and I then had a crewlist which showed up in the game and everything was OK.I should I believe have then just got on with the career and everything would have been fine.Sometime during that career I must have repeated the actions I described above and that must have generated another crewlist which then of course didn't match the one in the game.I've been using SH3 Commander since you first put it out and I've never done that before.
Regards and thanks for your reply.

:hmm: But the names should at least be the same. Aren't you also saying that the names are different?

As an aside (cause this may not be the reason here), apart from playing with crew files whilst mid-patrol, another cause of this is playing with any careers that are "In base before patrol 1". Such careers don't actually exist. Indeed, if you try to load them in SH3 you'll be asked to start a new career again, thus replacing any current files with new ones. This is because SH3 creates some files when you start a new career but does not create all until after your first patrol is finished. A career does not FULLY exist until after the first patrol is completed, although enough files exist to continue if you save mid-first patrol.

Unfortunately, there is no way for these careers to be 100% filtered out by SH3Cmdr as SH3 leaves the residual files behind.

The simple rule though is: "don't play with your crew or career until AFTER the first patrol is COMPLETED". I'll add a new FAQ covering this, even though it is in the readme - this q has popped up once or twice lately.

I always set my patrol grid in a new career to an AN.. grid and do a shake down cruise as patrol # 1. It eliminates all the problems listed above and more, and it is the way a navy really works.

This is exactly what happened. Timewise I was about two weeks into the first patrol of a new career.I lost a crewman to an air attack and I sort of wondered if he would show up as KIA in the crewlist so when I exited the game I opened SH3 Commander/Click for available actions/Manage your crew.Everything was OK the crew matching the one in the game but there was no change to the 'dead' crewmans status.I thought I'd check again next time I played.I did this the following day but this time when I clicked on 'Manage your crew' I found I had a different crewlist.Going back into the game I found the original crew still there.I thought I'd start a different career and see what happened.I took the boat out, saved ,exited to the desktop, opened SH3 Commander and everything was OK with the second careers' crewlist matching the one in the game.I then went back into the game, restarted the same career saved game, ran the boat out for another 24 hours game time, saved, exited to desktop and opened SH3Commander again.I found that the crewlist was now different from the one in the game,it was however the same crewlist that had replaced the original one in the first career so I thought 'Right, the answer must be not to open' Manage your crew' in the middle of a career'.

Great idea for early war (pre-summer 1940) careers, what if you start in France in 41 on though? I can't see doing a shakedown in the Bay of Biscay especially once the RAF starts intensive patrols. :hmm:

I bet you're running, or have ran, SH3Gen? SH3Cmdr R2.4 and SH3Gen are not compatible - SH3Gen adjusts the log files in a way not anticipated by SH3Cmdr R2.4 or lower. You need at least SH3Cmdr R2.4.1 if you are using SH3Gen. This exclusive-to-SH3Gen release of SH3Cmdr used to be available at Global Explorer's website, but was removed when SH3Cmdr R2.5 was released, which includes the adjustment by default.

If you don't want to d/l SH3Cmdr R2.5, then you may have luck contacting Global Explorer and asking for a copy of the SH3Cmdr R2.4.1 exe file. Maybe another SH3Gen user has a copy they can offer you? Unfortunately, I do not have a copy of R2.4.1 anymore (I don't store compiled files, only code).

If you get it, simply copy it over the top of your current version and all will be sweet.

Hehe, I just remembered the main reason why SH3Cmdr uses IIB numbers instead of IIA numbers...

It wasn't due to a lack of IIAs in combat, it was simply due to the fact that the 1st Flotilla didn't have IIA's, they only had IIB, IIC and IID's!
