View Full Version : [Mod Release] - New Ship - Empire Celt Tanker
Here is a new tanker I have completed. The model is named after the British tanker Empire Celt, but as I have only seen a picture of the broken stern half of the Empire Celt, I don't know how much resemblence there actually is. It is basically an older model, generic tanker.
I would recommend assigning this ship to the following nations:
Definitely:
US, UK, Germany, Italy, Japan, Norway, Greece, Panama, Spain, Portugal, Russia.
Also, these nations had several larger tankers, but very few:
Canada, Sweden, South Africa.
And Maybe...(but not sure):
Argentina, Colombia, Mexico, Turkey, Australia.
For now, I have uploaded the ship to Rapidshare, as FileShare is down. I will fix that ASAP.
EDIT - I have now removed the rapidshare link, as the ship has been uploaded to my fileshare page:

I only ever place ships into the country roster that had those ships, so your above Empire Celt will only go in the British folder like I placed your NCOT into the Japan folder.
As alway, well done.
OK. If that is your method of installation, here are the original countries of the other ships I released as well. Maybe this will help:
NCOT - You already know this was a Japanese design. The class name was actually Juyusen - I just found that out today.
NCVW - Pretty generic converted whale factory, but mainly based from the Ole Wegger, which was either German or Norwegian.
NCTH/NCHH - American Troop Transport.
NRC - Canadian Ore Carrier.
And of course, the Empire Celt was British, although this model does not resemble the parent ship very closely as the others do.
I may also release the Caribou (British/Newfoundland), Granville (British), Heavy Merchant (Completely Generic), and Pyro (US) after further testing.

Thx AG.

Yep, renamed already :)
NCVW - Pretty generic converted whale factory, but mainly based from the Ole Wegger, which was either German or Norwegian.
IIRC I think I gave this 1 to to Norway plus Germany, Canada and Japan, will adjust.
NCTH/NCHH - American Troop Transport.
NCTH I gave to the US, the NCHH I gave to the Red Cross.
I redid the equip files for both, the NCTH I changed the AA to 20mm Doubles and put the searchlights back on. The NCHH I stripped of all weps and put the searchlights back on.
NRC - Canadian Ore Carrier.
I dont have that 1 yet, odd!
I may also release the Caribou (British/Newfoundland), Granville (British), Heavy Merchant (Completely Generic), and Pyro (US) after further testing.
Looking forward to them.

Nice job. I can't seem to get good-looking skins for your factory ship, so I'll try skinning this thing. Most important of all, the NPTR funnel = funnel logos for civvy skins! http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/images/icons/icon6.gif
Is the ship armed later in the war?
RE: nationalities - If you want to use the ship as a stand-in for generic vessels I highly recommend adding it to the Swedish & Canadian rosters. IIRC Canada at one time owned the "C.O. Stillman" - possibly the largest WWII era purpose-built tanker at over 13000 GRT. Canada also owned the Imperial Oil ships, which were up to 11000 GRT - unfortunately several were lost in "Drumroll" circa 1942. Sweden had several large tankers, but I don't know of the class names. Same w/Mexico and Argentina.
Thanks for the info.:yep: I had heard of several large Canadian Tankers (excepts for the Nipiwan Park, they all seemed to be in excess of 9,000 GRT) but had no details on them. I wish I knew more about neutral merchant fleets as well.
And unfortunately no - this tanker has not been armed. Some of the weapons node points from the Merchant Cruiser/Transport might still work though, although some will no longer work properly of course (due to the 3d changes).
And thank you everyone else for the positive feedback thus far.:sunny:

Aaaaa. A new schiff! And a nice juicy one too! Esp with the black skin.
Thanks AG124
Update: The model has now been uploaded to FileShare, if anyone would rather get it there.:yep:

That is a loverly big piece of tonnage. I actually put my NCOT into a bunch of different Roster folders, just because small coastal tankers are fun to see.
This one looks quite nice.
Oh, I do have a question: Some ships show up in the manual as having type names (Large Cargo, or C3 Cargo), but these always show up for me as 'COT' rather than Coastal Tanker. I've tried to change it, but nothing I do seems to work.

Coastal Tanker.
It sounds as if you have a problem with your Englishnames.cfg. Are you sure that you have the following line:
COT=Coastal Tanker
If you have NCOT=Coastal Tanker, or something like that, the name will show up as the file name (i.e. COT).
They look awesome. Amazing work there mate. Kudos!
Even thought i tend to hunt them down with my sub, i still love good ships!

Well, I made an attempt at skinning it, and this thing kicked my diveplanes. :dead: One problem is that the original model duplicates the hull textures vertically, making skins look weird unless you're very careful. I first noticed this when I made the hospital ship skin about a year ago...

My great-uncle (grandfather's brother) was in the Canadian Merchant Marine so I have spent some time reading up on it.
The largest Canadian Registered ship to be lost in WW2 was the Empress of Asia, bombed by Japanese aircraft near Singapore 5th Feb, 42. 16,909 tons. Role was Troop Ship.
The largest Canadian owned (British Registered) ship lost was the Empress of Britain, torpedoed by U-32 after being bombed by the Luftwaffe off Ireland 55-16N 09-50W. Date was 28th Oct 1940. Tonnage was an huge 42,348!! This was the largest allied merchant loss of the entire war.

Nope, it definitely says COT=Coastal Tanker, and I'm still seeing COT in the periscope and UZO notepad.

I always liked the way that ship looked, with the gold funnels and white hull. Too bad she didn't survive the war (although she'd probably have been scrapped soon afterwards, b/c she was so unprofitable).
I've seen and heard of the Empress of Britain, but I've never heard of the Empress of Asia. Does anyone have a picture of her to post here?

Empress of Asia
Empress of Asia was built for Canadian Pacific by Fairfield Shipbuilding and Engineering of Glasgow, and was launched in November 1912. She made her maiden voyage, Liverpool-Cape Town-Hong Kong on 14 June 1913, and from there entered Canadian Pacific's transpacific service between Vancouver and Yokohama.
She was requisitioned for use as a Red Sea armed merchant cruiser in 1914. She was returned to Canadian Pacific in 1916, but was again requisitioned, as a troop ship, in 1918. She resumed her duties in Canadian Pacific's transpacific service in 1919, and made a total of 307 voyages. She was again requisitioned as a trooper in 1941, one of a very small number of merchant ships to see duty in both World Wars. (Her sister, Empress of Russia (http://www.greatships.net/empressrussia.html), was another.) On 5 February 1942, she was sunk by a Japanese air attack while off Singapore; out of the 2, 651 people on board, there were fewer than twenty killed, but a large number of the survivors were taken prisoner when Singapore fell a week and a half later. The ship herself drifted ashore and burned out over the two days following the attack. She was scrapped where she lay beginning in 1952.
There you go mate
Thanks. Good looking ship too.

Has anyone else had a problem getting the Empire Celt Tanker to show in the museum? Ive built the folder for it in jsgme twice now and i still can't get it to show up. I also tryed installing the Empire Celt and then the hospitol ship after it and the englishnames file for the hospitol ship has both entrys for both ships but only the hospitol ship shows up in the museum? I have the celt tanker setup with quite a few nations and when I check the museum its not in the list for any of them... and I have the roster file setup correctly for each of them. :damn:
I have like 5 other ships installed that work just fine but this one just dosent seem to want to show... I donno what the deal is. :nope:
Anyone else have this problem?

 Think I just found the problem...
I left out the Sea folder inside the Roster/(Nation)/.. folder.
I guess I saw the sea folder for the actual ship information and though it was the one for the nation. Anyway, im going to fix that and see if it works, im pretty positive that it will. This might be related to your problem you said you had with your WIP ship...
Edit: It works now.

Hi to all, I have tried many times to manually install these fantastic new ships, I follow the instructions and enter a new file in the sea folder, then alter the english names cfg. I load SH3 and the new ships are even in the library, but I never see them, not in port, out at sea by themselves or in convoy, have I done shomething wrong.
I ambecomelife had some great merchent mods with flags down the sides, but I cannot find these any where, are they finished.
Looking forward to some advise re the new ships and how to install them so I can sink them.
Regards to all
Jonathan
It sounds as if you have a problem with your Englishnames.cfg. Are you sure that you have the following line:
COT=Coastal Tanker
If you have NCOT=Coastal Tanker, or something like that, the name will show up as the file name (i.e. COT). That sounds like something needing looking into. I don't know offhand, but as soon as I get home I'll check it out.

Iambecomelife's merchants are still under construction - if you go back a long way in the 'Mod Request...' thread, you will see a lot more of them.:hmm:
Certain ships will rarely show up in the campaigns. I assume you are using a stock installation - the stock campaign has generic (unspecified) entries for single contact only. New ships will never show up in convoys unless you edit the convoys themselves, and I am fairly certain the the Harbour Traffic mod uses mainly scripted traffic as well.
With single ship contacts, there are many generic entries for freighters (type 102) and tankers (type 101). There are also some generic entries for passenger vessels (type 103), and most coastal vessels are generic (type 104). That means if you install a new tanker of freighter, you may see them travelling individually, and there is also a chance (rare) that you may see a new passenger vessel. New coastal crafts should appear frequently.
There are different ways to get new ships to show up in your campaign. You can delete the entry specifying the ship class (such as KLS, OTMS_T2, etc) but this can have its problems (especially with type 103's). You can also create new entries for the ships, using either the campaing editor or notepad.
Hope this helps a little.
