Major New Addition to Harpoon Series Includes Multiplayer!

Matrix Games and Advanced Gaming Systems (www.advancedgaming.biz (http://www.advancedgaming.biz/)) are pleased to announce that Harpoon 3 Advanced Naval Warfare, the new multiplayer addition to the distinguished Harpoon modern air and naval strategy series, is scheduled for release this quarter via digital download and game on demand from the Matrix Games online store.

Harpoon 3 Advanced Naval Warfare is the result of decades of development and fan support, resulting in the most comprehensive, realistic, and accurate simulation of modern combined air and naval operations available to the gaming public. The new Multiplayer support raises the bar for the Harpoon series to a whole new level of immersion and gaming excitement!

David Heath, Director of Operations at Matrix Games, stated, "We are privileged to have a chance to work on the Harpoon series and the great team at Advanced Gaming Systems that has worked hard to bring it to a whole new level. If you've ever played or thought about playing Harpoon, this enhanced, fully upgraded releases are a must have for your game collection!"

Harpoon 3 Advanced Naval Warfare gives you the opportunity to manage some of the most advanced air and naval assets available in the world and puts you in the middle of many historical and 'what if' scenarios (including six multiplayer scenarios). Battle Iranian Revolutionary Guard in the Persian Gulf – or to take the opportunity to re-live Operation El Dorado Canyon and strike at the heart of Libya. Try your hand at guarding the Greenland-Iceland-U.K. Gap to stop a Soviet naval invasion of the Atlantic – or stalk unwary U.S. shipping in a Soviet Akula-class submarine. The NATO versus Warsaw Pact conflict that never came to be serves as fertile wargaming ground to provide many chances to explore any eventuality. You'll have the chance to play from either side, experiencing a wide variety of challenges.

Don Gilman, President of Advanced Gaming Systems, said, "Harpoon 3 Advanced Naval Warfare has been a while in the making, but we feel the result is well worth the time spent. We're excited to be working with a wargame-friendly publisher such as Matrix Games on this release and we are looking forward to the response from strategy and wargamers around the world!"

Your control over your forces gives you the flexibility to manage air strike loadouts, determining what kind of weapons to place for the aircraft's upcoming mission. Task force composition and layout can be determined, so specific ships can be set to anti-air, anti-submarine, or anti-surface warfare; you can set threat axes and guard against enemy incursions. You can even set sonar variables for surface ships and submarines alike, commanding their crews to sprint, drift and scan passively, sprint again, and scan with active sonar – all control over these aspects, and more, is completely up to you.

Harpoon 3 Advanced Naval Warfare also gives you access to other players over the Internet, allowing two to six players plus additional spectators to be engaged in a single game. When not shooting the seas up in multiplayer mode, a single player mode is available allowing you to access any one of the scenarios and fight against a savvy A.I. opponent that knows how to control and coordinate large and small forces alike.

Harpoon 3 Advanced Naval Warfare supports third party databases, two of which will be announced on the Matrix website on launch. These are in addition to the updated Legacy database and the scenarios shipping with the game (giving you over 300 scenarios total). Also included is a configuration and launcher system to allow for easy tuning of the many configuration options addressed by this sophisticated simulation. Additionally, for ultimate control over your gaming experience, Harpoon 3 Advanced Naval Warfare ships with the Scenario Editor, and features two database editors (to be shipped later). These provide the tools to create your own fleets, weapons, and scenarios.

I've got to say the price tage is a tad ridiculous at AU$69 I don't see any but an absolute Harpoon nutter taking the bait on this one. If they were more reaslistic at about AU$5 I reckon they might get some more business.:nope:

I don't disagree, but everyone can make their own evaluation of cost/benefit.

Here's some other discussion threads regarding the value of ANW. You can check out:

$50 is it worth it? (http://www.GameSquad.com/forums/harpoon-series/42101-50-worth.html)

There are also a number of issues that were introduced when the game was released.

I Loved Harpoon 2 when it was out . . . but $50, really? Hmm . . . that's a little suspect.

But I gotta wonder . . . has anyone written up of scenario of Isreal v Hezbollah for Harpoon 3 or any other wargaming program . . . or for that matter a India v China . . . or a India V Pakistan . . . or China v Japan . . . or China V Australia+Singapore+Malaysia+Indonesia+Philippines (not that they have anything to contribute)

Yes. Several scenarios have been written on those situations you mention. Check out the entire list on Harpoon Scenarios Posted on GameSquad (http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/showthread.php?t=22779)

Some that come to mind are:

The 2nd Lebanese War battleset (http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/showpost.php?p=873400&postcount=37)
4 scenarios in that one and Hezbollah plays a side

21st Century Ocean Wars Battleset (http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/showpost.php?p=811003&postcount=23)
Has a few situations like PRC vs India/Thailand

Several of the scenarios in SE Asia with Australia/Indonesia/Philippines from the original H2 release have been re-built for the PlayersDB

120 more scenarios for the Harpoon 3 Players Database! (http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/showthread.php?t=66241)

If you can tolerate the current state of the game, you might want to try them out.

The patch that they made for it fixed a lot of issues with it. Yes, still some issues remain, but about 99% of them won't even be noticed by your average player. Only a really serious naval fanatic who knows a LOT LOT about platforms and their systems would notice. There aren't any real game crippling bugs in ther for the average gamer.
Also, Matrix is continueing work on the bugs that the community discovers. They seem to be a good company with a really good habit of keeping in touch with the community about stuff like that. The only drawbacks is with a game this complex behind the scenes, it takes a long time to bug test the new patches.

Harpoon III Advanced Naval Warfare is one of my favorite sims. I've found no major crippling bugs in my play.

I disagree with that. There are still a few CTD-type bugs in the game like:

Fly off the world CTD
http://tinyurl.com/2lvrk5

CTD when Database button is depressed
http://tinyurl.com/2yq6u9

Players may not think that they are experiencing bugs, but they are simply encountering them unwittingly since many of them affect the AI and its behaviour.

For example, you might find that you can easily penetrate AI defences and you could think that you must be one heckuva sub driver, right? Wrong. The AI is simply so crippled that even when it has you detected and locked up, it won't fire. You may think of yourself as Otto Kretchmer, but it simply isn't so.

Unknown Sub contacts not attacked

Or, you could blast the heck out of a CVBG without ever knowing that the reason why it is so easy to 'kill' it is because the AI simply cannot launch planes in its own defence.

All strikers fail to launch

Just because a player isn't aware that he is encountering a bug doesn't mean that the bug doesn't affect him.

Here is the original demo:

Just temporarily dial your system clock back to Jan 1, 2008 to run it.
