View Full Version : AI Visual Detection - beware by day, attack by night....

We have made some great progress with the AI visual that we think will go a long way to making a lot of people happy.
The figures below are currently for the escorts. We have created a merchant only visual sensor that we have yet to modify. However, there is little to modify in the sensor (DAT) itself so we do not wish to make too many promises about how different the escort and merchant visual performance will be.
Currently we have only tested day and night in 5, 10 & 15 mps winds. We have 2 aspects, that of bow on and that of bow off.
Bow on covers about approx 60 degrees, or 30 port and starboard of 0, and bow off is from there to 30 degrees off 180.
We also have set it up so that at speeds of 5 knots and below you will be able to close in much further... see at bottom
For BOW ON and clear day with
0 mps you will get detected at around 4500
10 mps you will get detected at around 3300
For BOW ON and a clear night with
0 mps you will get detected at around 1200
10 mps you will NOT get detected
For BOW OFF and clear day with
0 mps you will get detected at around 7400
10 mps you will get detected at around 6000
For BOW OFF and a clear night with
0 mps and bow off you will get detected at around 2800
10 mps and bow off you will get detected at around 2000
If you are approaching an escort at around 5 knots you may be able to for BOW ON and a clear night with 0 mps get as close as 700 metres!
Of course show him any bow off, or side aspect and you are dead meat!
Anyway, there is a long way to go and we will keep you up to date as it all unfolds.
BTW, the fog factor is broken, nothing we can do there.
Great news Teddy!
This will change the way this game is played by miles (pun indended).

Teddy
The hits just keep on coming.
Nothing more frustrating to attempt to sneak up on a convoy on a stormy night and they see you the same as daylight.
*ahem*
What is bow ON/OFF?
I assume you mean Bow ON as showing them nothing but your bow, making you a small target, and hard to see. Bow OFF I assume means you are trying to run along side of the, parallel, so they see your whole ship?

Looking good! Thanks a lot.
Just one thing isn't clear to me yet. What does the wind speed have to do with visibility? I can understand that my own speed and the wake of the boat may facilitate my being detected, but what difference does it make if we have 5mps winds or not except maybe that with higher winds there may be higher waves as well or the wind may thow more spray into the air, but that's as far as I can put it. Could someone please elaborate? Thanks.

In my actual war patrol, autum 1941, in the heavy fog during the day, after i sunk 5 ships , i´m getting the "we have been detected" mensage and the steal meter in red. after a few minutes the scorts appears in scene and i had to crash dive. i was running in the surface.
Always the same, they follow me like dogs to the bone , they had a jedi knight in the bridge. ??

Ahh this is gonna be such a great feature to the NYGM mod!! Just today i had an annoying experience :shifty: with the god stupid escort. Heavy seas, at night. The punk spots me at like 3000m. Ridiculous. Took an hour to get in position. This will help TREMENDOUSLY!

In addition we have also created a new Merchant Visual Sensor!
Even with the limited option that are available in the DAT, we have reduced the Merchant's ability to see in comparison to the escorts.
For example, if in a certain situation the Escort Visual AI would 'see' you at a distance of 7000+ metres the Merchant Visual AI will not see you until 4000+ metres.
Please remember we are working with an 'operationally impared' setup and that this will be an ongoing project. BUT... it is a continuous trade off between competing desired results and it will never be perfect everywhere. Also, the FOG value is broken in so much as we cannot adjust it.
Also, here are some examples of the different weather effects...
Perfect day BOW ON
0 mps = 4500
5 mps = 4000
Heavy Cloud & Light Fog BOW ON
0 mps = 2750
5 mps = 2400
Heavy Cloud & Heavy Fog & Medium Rain BOW ON
0 mps = 600
5 mps = 550

These degrees are about my boat or is the bow target?
thks.

thks. It is your boat. If you keep your bow or stern to the enemy he will have be less likely to detect you.
This will be more of a night occurance (maybe heavy weather) but as you get closer the less room for manouvering you have. For example, if we said that at 6000 metres you had about 30 degrees then at 2000 metres is may be only 10 degrees.
Excellent news!

Remaining unobserved by the enemy is now critically important
Previously getting detected by the enemy was nothing more than a minor inconvenience where if you were unlucky an airplane might come by your way or at worst a single escort might also show up, hang around in the wrong spot for what ever was left of the 40 minutes before leaving.
Ho-hum…
I happy to say that the NYGM AI Vision Mod will change this. Not the current response outlined above, though we do hope to bring some changes about with the NYGM Coastal Command mod, but that is a way off yet. But because the AI will now see you further, that is, further than I have previously mentioned.
I have given some examples of approximate distance that you are likely to get detected, but it is not that cut and dried.
The distances mentioned were for an escort not on high alert. That is an escort just cruising down the English Channel or protecting a convoy.
However, should the escort AI be on high alert, then the detection distances are greatly enhanced.
For example, previously you got detected by the Merchant AI in the English Channel and if any escort/s turned up you could watch from a mere 4000 odd metres away or you could even watch the escort through your periscope from 1000 metres.
Now, on a perfect day, an escort on high alert may detect you as far as 10,000 metres away and if you stick your periscope up high enough, at several thousand.
As you can imagine the old hit the convoy, wait a short while and hit the convoy again all before brunch will be a thing of the past. After you have evaded the escorts you will now have to wait until the escorts have moved sufficiently away before you can risk surfacing and making plans for another attack.
How long will the escort stay on high alert? I don’t know…
