View Full Version : IX Tower issues: Help me solve this.

Ok i dont know if anyone's really looked at it, and if anyone has, i suppose the man to see would be Steibler, as it's most likely approached simiarly to a cable fix. Anywhere, let me illustrate the problem:
IX/2 tower periscopes fully retracted, ,the only correct tower for theIX boat, periscopes sitting in their wells:

IX/1 and IX/3 tower periscopes fully retracted, extending out of the periscope wells:

It's always annoyed the hell out of me having these "appendages" sticking out on the bridge. The problem im theorizng is that the periscopes are acutally TOO LONG.
The clue is subtle,
Here is a full extended periscope on a IX/2 tower:
http://www.ducimus.net/sh3/15_meters.jpg
As you can see, the needle stops at 15 meters.
Here is a fully extended periscope on an IX/1 and IX/2 tower:
http://www.ducimus.net/sh3/15_5_meters.jpg
Not quite 15 meters, a bit more then that, More like 15.5
That would correlate with the exterior view as they seem to stick out of the pericope wells at about that heigth.
Is this fixable? Is anyone who knows how willing to do it? If it is fixible, and nobody really wants to bother with it, id really appreciate it if you'd tell me HOW to do it, and what programs i would need. This has annoyed me for far too long.

Sorry, I have no knowledge of cable fixes.
I think you have confused me with someone else.
Stiebler.

I tried like heck to figure it out the other day. When it comes to modding, i think my strongpoints are probably anythign dealing with logic, or something that can be rationalized. Im very mechanical and methodical in my thinking.
Anythign "artsy" or art related i am horrible at.
My amaturish attempts were as such:
Pack3d. I thought maybe it was a simple X, Y, Z coordinate issue. My first challenge was to figoure out what 3d objects were the periscopes. After much trial and error, and some REALLY weird results (and getting a couple objects to load in a new install of wings3d, a program ive never used before) it looked like it was the "Pick" opjects.
Now since i coudlnt really figure out to edit the pick itself, an idea hit me. Export the IX/2 "Picks" and import them into the I/X3 and IX/1 towers. Naturally pack3d woudlnt let me do it. At that point i went back to editing XYZ coords of the 3d objects within the dat file, which was an utter failure. It seems that when you alter ANY objects location it skews the entire crew watch and AA guns, as they'll appear UNDERNEATH the conning tower deck, upside down. About the only remote sign of success i had was i got what i think was the radio antenna out of the conning tower and onto the deck of the boat. Although the tip of this antenna was stil retracted within its housing as well.
At any rate, i gave up on figuring it out on my own. What really ruined my day is that ANY change in coordinates for a given object, no matter how slight i thought it was, would result in the exact same funky anomaly regardless. Thats when i gave up. :-?

Please keep us updated...I would like to have the periscopes fully retracted too.

It will be several weeks in coming as it requires testing to ensure that all is correct in regards to....
1. Comparing range calcs from the manual, against the officer and Auto TDC.
2. Ensure proper detection of the periscope in relation to say the VII
3. Ensure proper damage of the periscope from depth charges
The above shouldn't take too long, but then there is the playing it, i.e. not testing but just playing.
Keep i commin' guys! You'll fix this game to a new standart.
Cool find Ducimus! This was one of the Bugs only a Type IX lover could find! ;)
Oh one more thing!
Anyone knows what happend to the tilt fix!? Someone was tryin' to fix the dive; crashdive tilt/angle thingie in the interior, along with a better "shake" effect while DC'ed!
Sorry for the off topic Ducimus!;)

Not really offtopic, thats anothe thing thats always bugged me, i just never really got around to mentioning it.
The whole interior is quirked in two (err no, THREE) ways off the top of my head.
1.) the crew management compartment locations are configured for a type 7.
2.) crash dive tilting is haywire. Sometimes it feels like the lilt is aft, instead of forward. And sometimes its the other way around.
3.) Fuel gauge doesnt work. After studing it awhile i have two points that i think are wrong with it.
a.) The float indicator is black instead of that diesal fuel colored yellowish tint.
b.) the scale is off. The black float indicator DOES MOVE, however the scale of the fuel gauge itself is way off. It indicates less fuel then you acutally have. Ordinarly you might think of this as a result of jacking the fuel capacity of the boat too high, but if you swap the type 9 interior out and use a type 7 interior, its fuel gauge works PEFECTLY, regardless of the fuel capacity of the boat.
