View Full Version : Maps - just an idea

In the real life, when the skippers left out from the base, they knew pretty well the basic routes the traffic used in peace time. (Also they knew, in the beginning of the war, the traffic will avoid using these routes after the hostilities has begun.) I have been thinking how great it would be if those real routes could be shown in the navmap. And I'm not talking about the routes the sim use, but the real ones. (Maybe they are merged at least sometimes)
What's the purpose?
I think routes marked in the navmap could act as basic lines when you are planning your actions in the oparea. Just like they did in RL.

If I could build this up, I would do it. But I'm not that skilled so I thought to leave my idea to the forum in case someone would find it to be enough interesting and useful.

If I recall correctly there was a map mod showing convoy routes out a long time ago. Don't remember the name but perhaps someone else can supply it. Also check on terapin's site

I've tried the Nav map in GW and I think it's just a bit off not much but a bit but now I know (40%)were they are am happy and have no quams with it .As "Rosencrantz" said whats the purpose?.
My version of the question is If I have to patrol a grid near a convoy route so be it then 24 hrs later (unless a convoy turns up)do the entire route South or North pot luck I say depending on fuel and the boat you have and try to intercept something.
The only time I avoid convoy route is when I have no fish left and returning to base and I think a lot of people will agree when you have no fish left and returning home no matter where you are a convoy is not far from you.

Surprisingly, the convoy chart supplied with SH3 and the ones in Clair Blair's vol I, Hitler's U-Boat War are spot on.

Well, I wasn't talking about large scale maps, but small scale maps. Especially when operating near coast it would be nice to see the basic routes. But I think this is like with depth markings: Most of the time you'll do just fine without them, but anyway they would be nice "addon" and sometimes even useful.

Allways you can, of course, use just basic sailing manuals printed in RL.
