Got the idea for this one the other night while watching Das Boot. During one of the depth charges scenes you could see something painted like a candycane in the control room.
Anyone know what it is?

On ships, and some airplanes any rotatating shaft is painted like this so that its motion is noticiable. The particular shaft you inquire about is the shaft for the DF loop aerial. At least it conicides with the control room plan drawings I have at my disposal. Not sure why this one is painted such, but U-995 (the boat at Laboe) has the same thing. The shaft did not turn very fast. The stripe is a warning so someone could avoid getting wraped around and consequently killed by the shaft while it was rotating. It may also be the shaft for the periscope traverse motor, this I am not too sure of, seeing as finding any info on the fixed eye piece, motorized periscope depicted in the movie is near impossible.
