I am very excited about Stieblers additions to the NYGM Tonnage War Campaign.

I have request:
could you please release those convoys as a seperate mergable layer. More convoys will be usefull to people who use different campaigns besides NYGM. :yep:

Regardless of any other gameplay modification, IMHO additions to the campaign are the most important ones. Well done. :up:

I'm sure the coastal will be small ones, with little to no escort. I like that, not because it makes it easy, but because it adds variety.

I second that, and I think in the future all campaigns should come with files containing only new units. Apart from the solvable problem of having to rename the group indexes, all that'd have to be done would be to copy paste the files to the end of another campaign file.
I once thought about an app that dynamically generates new campaign files from a database of single groups. with so many nice hand created campaigns, dynamic campaign generation now seems unnecessary, but the basic idea of merging campaign modules/layers would work fine.
These will be excellent additions!

The NYGM additions are also historically based.
These convoy additions while assing variety are in route and dates periods historically correct.
And yes, the convoys will be smallish...

The new UK east-coast convoys reflect reality. Transportation of goods by sea is always more efficient than by any other route - provided the goods arrive safely! - so convoys ran throughout the war.
However, their main threat came from the Luftwaffe and from S-boats (commonly known to the Allies as E-boats, fast motor torpedo boats), and their defences were primarily organised for flak and to fend off S-boats. Thus the convoys tended to be small but frequent, and I've given them a defence of armed trawlers with at least one 'serious' anti-submarine escort (corvette, destroyer or frigate), with better escorts later in the war.
In random testing during a patrol up and down the east coast of the UK in 1940, I collected 14 radio reports of convoys (8 heading north, six south) in the space of 14 days - several reports were from the same convoys, of course. So there are plenty of opportunities. But don't forget your U-boat has to cross the UK east coast minefields first.....
The Antwerp convoy is also quite interesting, running from the Thames to Antwerp to supply the advancing Allied armies, after that Belgian city had been recaptured in September 1944. These were convoys of prime importance for attack by the Germans, but the hazards for a U-boat were so great that, so far as I know, only one U-boat (U 245) ever actually made an attack following special, written, orders from Doenitz. U 245 got away. The Antwerp convoys have a competent anti-U-boat defence.
Incidentally, all the new convoys and lone merchant ships have been given an actual full campaign (1939-1945) workout during testing.
About making them available for other campaign mods:
They would all need renumbering and, obviously, the other mods must have the correct ships (I used NYGM's current available selection).
Some time ago, I created a special program that would automatically enable a text mod to be fitted into an existing text mod, either adding or replacing text that was already there. However, it involved batch file manipulation, and the unanimous feeling of NYGM team members was it would be too tricky for the average SH3 player to use. I think they are right, considering how many user complaints JScones gets for his simple, robust and excellent SH3Commander. Pity though.

Writing a tool that renumbers entries could be done in one afternoon. I only suggested this as a technique for modders, if you're talking about end-users merging campaigns I agree.

You may want to delay the start of the Thames-Antwerp convoys if you're working for historical accuracy. The British had captured the docks and wharves of Antwerp intact on September 4, 1944, but the Germans held the banks of the the Scheldt estuary through which all ships had to pass before reaching Antwerp. The estuary was cleared in mid-November, 1944, and the he first allied transports did not arrive until November 28, 1944. It has been held over for testing of the NYGM U-Boat Mod.
