View Full Version : Can't Play GW any more ))(FIXED)((

I started using the GW mod when it first came out and it worked fine.. then my computer's MB died and I had to get a new one so I got an AMD instead and the game ran OK but I was not happy with the flaws that I had with AMD such as not being able to switch between 2 computers with my USB KVM switch, and also video playback was bad, so I got an Intel Gigabyte GA-81PE1000 and I have not been able to play since,

My specs are:
Windows XP Corp Pro Service Pack 2 with all updates
I also have a version of XP media center edition SP 2
3 Gigs Ram = [2 * 1024 and 2 * 512 (DDR 3200)
Nvidia AGP 6800-GT video card with 256 megs of memory
Gigabyte GA-81PE1000
4 Sata drives
Sound Blaster Audigy 2
Intel P4 Prescott 2.03 Ghz

I can not get the game to run at all any more
every time I do it crashes and I get a message do I want to sent the error to M$.
I have copied the error message but unless your a M$ designer I don't think it make much sense.. but the DR Watson log in the event viewer is like so

The application, D:\SilentHunterIII\sh3.exe, generated an application error The error occurred on 05/09/2006 @ 08:17:35.468 The exception generated was c0000005 at address 004D6D70 (sh3)

&

Faulting application sh3.exe, version 1.4.0.1, faulting module sh3.exe, version 1.4.0.1, fault address 0x000d6d70.

the most consistant error is the ( c0000005 ) error the address isn't always the same and I have done a Goggle search on c0000005 and there are probably 3000 hits mostly having to do with Visual FoxPro which does me no good.. What have I done to trouble shoot the problem???

I have reinstalled windows using Windows Media edition and also the pro version...
I NEVER reinstall over the the old version and ALWAYS Format before install, but I have done a generic install and then ghosted the install so I could go back to the way it was which is faster then doing a whole install over again..

I have tested each memory module extensively which took me 2 days because I wanted to run the test with the sticks together and by them selves
and also tried running the game with each one of the 4 sticks to make sure.

I have tried a different CPU

I took the MB back and got a new one but could only get one of the same type because that is the only one they can get a hold of

When I install the game It is a plain vanilla install with the GW mod only

I have re downloaded the GW mod and update twice..

I have thought of the possibility that the Sound card or sound card driver was it and have removed it and tried using the Mother Boards on board sound card and that didn't work

I have tried a different video card, I also have a Nvidia 5959 Ultra with 256 megs of memory also I have tried several drivers

I have spare parts but not enough money to but a different mother board,I can't believe both of them were bad and or they just won't play a game, I have looked it up on line and haven't found any one with a problem playing any games..

I probably tried 20 other things that I can't think of right now but
any thoughts would be appreciated

Can you ellaborate a little ?
Does SH3+1.4 patch start ok ?
In that case, after installing GW, when does the game CTD ?
ie : loading screen, starting a mission.

Sorry should have said!
It runs OK with normal install and the 1.4 patch
when I try to run the updated to GW version it will start OK and I can move around the menus OK but if I try to start a game either a mission or career mission it will load all the way up and I will see the (Not to long ago) then it crashes and I get an error report asking if I want to send to M$ the It will give me a report full of files names and Gobbley Gook like so >>>

http://rapidshare.de/files/20036513/_____39a5_appcompat.txt.html

It would look funky if I pasted it...

and if I look in the event log it will show the 2 errors I previously posted

Thanks :)

I'd recommend to start with a memory diagnostic, followed by graphic card "torture".

Memory test:
http://memtest86.com/
Run the tests for 3-4 hours, longer is better.

Graphic card test:

The 'Basic Edition' is free and should do the job.

Just make sure your hardware - especially memory - is REALLY ok.

The times I have this error at that stage of loading was due to the game trying to load a faulty ship or sound file, the only advice I can give you is  to download the GW files again.

Already done that and took 2 days to test the memory also if you read I tried each of the 4 sticks by themselves
and also tried different Video card there is no way both are bad doing the same thing..

I still have all of the 7Z files I downloaded..both times, I have extracted both to new temp directories, If they were correupt they would not have extracted with out errors and would not have matched..when I do a properties in the Data folder by itself I get

Size : 1.72 GB (1,850,165,907 bytes)

Size On Disk : 1.79 GB (1,924,825,088 bytes)

Contains 2,715 Files 438 Folders

Attributes = Read-Only

I tried replacing the sound files with the originals from a working game directory I have saved else ware (NoT GW Version) and the same results then I replaced the Sea folder from the same working game directory and of course it crashed way before the progress bar got half way across the screen probably because it did not contain all of the files it needed, which ship files could be corrupt??
Is it possible to have a breakdown of the of the names of the mods used and possibly the modifications to them to make GW work together. I have the list of the mods used in the The Grey Wolves v1.0 Readme!!!.rtf but not the actual names of them I could replace the mods one by one or upgrade the game mod by mod possibly figuring out what it messed up on my machine,

Don't be so sure about that, 7z files haven't a crc check as zip or rar files have, to improve the compresion ratio, we're working on an installer to fix that problem.
As for the list of changes, It would be unpractical as GW is not only a collection of untouched mods, most of them have been tweaked and refined.

Yea, I also had strange problems with my first GW install, as you I thought it couldnt be the files since there were no errors, but as ref says 7z files have no error checking so you could have half a file without knowing.

I fixed everything with a new download...

I have built many versions of SH3 including the evil Seawolves as a separate install on the same PC (different HD).
I have had many CTD to developed things but the only time I have ever had CTD that reached the actual start up "Not Long Ago" or "Initializing" is when the Documents SH3 career CFG had a problem.
That is what is being loaded when you see the Initializing logo.
May I suggest you delete that SH3 folder in My Documents and start the game and enter a new career and reset all you preferences before you do any more of the things you are doing of which I am sure have nothing to do with your problem (Although I to have done similar things to search for answers so empathize)
CTD can sometimes be traced to when it happens in start up. That is at what point in the red bar.
If it is a ship problem you can find that out in museum by looking at each ship (Each year also has to be clicked to insure it is not a missing weapon)

Thanks for the help!
I hate to sound like a man with a thousand excuses but I already tried deleting the SH3 career setting folder in My Documents and I starting a new career several times, I can't play a single mission either, I did try the museum though and did look at each of the ships but didn't but didn't look at each year maybe I should?
I know that some of the cargo ship had weapons starting in certain years but I'm not sure which years started for which ships?..I did find that the game crashed sending an error report and event log entry if I minimized the game while in the museum but not if I was roaming around in the menus,
That said I did re download the GW mod installed SH3 updated and still same thing..
I can actually play the game a modded version of the game with out problems But the GW version has a few tweaks perks and benefits that I can't get from modding alone unless I had a list of the mods used then maybe I could try running one by one and eliminate the problem
Thanks again

Sorry for not reading your post more carefully.

How do you install the mod(s)? Which version of JSGME are you using? I had CTDs with using a too old version; installed the newest one (1.3.4.42) and problem was fixed. Confusing was that RUB was ok, but IUB gave me a CTD.

"If it is a ship problem you can find that out in museum by looking at each ship (Each year also has to be clicked to insure it is not a missing weapon)"

Whoa...excellent suggestion for those pesky unknown CTD's that always seem to occur around ships and convoys....at least for me.
Thanks. :D

A CTD only occures when the "Inializing" starts because of the My Documents folder SH3 cfg. Now, that being said the fact you reinstalled and started from scratch means it is an error in the start SH3 folder.

But what???

I would certainly get a new DL of GW. I had a some problems with 1.1 and reinstalled the whole mess and then reinstalled 1.1 except the CFG folder and I have no problems now.

I would make a My Docs folder from a stock 1.4B install and save it. Then install GW, try starting a career patrol in different years if it happens again start replacing, one at a time, the crew cfg in the GW My docs folder with stock ones.
Tedious but look at it more as a game in and of itself. What other choice?

Museum search is not the only way or reason to have CTD as you near a convoy. It can also be your zone file. If it is a ship it is usually because you modded something improperly or can be at the least.

Note to all; when you have a stable install and want to make an update make a copy of the entire data folder and date it before you start modding it.
If you do a new version that gives you hell, you can always revert to the old one and everything happens in the data folder so this eliminates any need for reinstalling SH3.

I Fixed it!!!!
This is really messed up and have no idea why it would screw it up but I replaced files one at a time or groups at a time and found the 1 file that was causing the crash!

Located: Data\Crew\Helmet\OFF\

( 01_OFF_Helmet01_D(white).tga )

I deleted this file and so far no more crashes??
I'm not sure why this 1 tga file would cause it to mess up!!
not sure if I even need this file, I think it is just an optional file to make the the Helm Officers hat white??
I coud probably replace it with
( 01_OFF_Helmet01_D.tga ) and just rename it if need be..

I can open it in PSP and view it ok....wierdest thing I never would have believed it to be a TGA file causing the problem

Thanks for all the help and suggestions, I can rest peaceably with out pulling my hair out and in frustration any more :smug:
