View Full Version : Do I have a problem with Commander or what is this?

I saved my game during patrol and exit, then opened Cmdr again just for fun and went to manage your crew section. What I found was that there's too many crew members listed (38 men on the list compared 27 on board in my II-class boat), and knowone seems to be hamiliar at all to me. I couldn't find a single name belonging to my crew. Also officers ranks and qualifications, not only their names, are now incorrect.
Now I'm worried, what's this? Does that mean the system is totaly messed or what? Or is this just normal? I didn't make any changes in crew while on patrol nor nothing else "stupid". Situation was what it was allready when I opened the CM section.
I'm using 2.5 version, RuB 1.45, HT, Real Batterys for RuB.
Any ideas?
Thanks for your help!

Thanks Steve.
I a newbie with Cmdr, I used 2.3 for a while, liked it very much and didn't find any problems with it. Then I changed to 2.5. Before I started this career I did edit some crew qualifications and ranks in Cmdr's realistic crew folder (just for II-class/1.). I did a same kind of editing to RuBs file months ago before I even used Cmdr. I didn't find any problems to do it and everything worked out very well. But maybe I can't do this with Cmdr? JScones? Before I got new Cmdr I installed new clean installation of SHIII, patched and got in RuB1.45 + HT. Everything seemed to be ok before I left to 1. patrol on this career.

How many careers have you got? Is it possible you opened the wrong one?
See, put simply, SH3Cmdr only goes where you tell it to go and picks up whatever data that it finds there. So, if you select career "John", SH3Cmdr will simply look for the latest relevant crew_career file under the "John" career folder. It then does no more than list what it finds in that file. If, as you say, you can't recognise the name of *any* of your crew and the crew count doesn't add up, the only explanation is that you were looking at the crew list for another career, or have somehow modified your crew_career files.
Adding further weight is that I highly doubt that the career you opened was a IIA career - SH3Cmdr performs a check for the two sub types that don't have stern tubes. There is no way it would list 38 crew when the (default) max for a IIA is 27. Were you perhaps checking out the Crew Manager whilst you were on your *first* patrol in a new career? This may cause problems due to SH3 not recording career details until *after* the first patrol is completed (ie out of SH3Cmdr's control), especially if you have modified the stock crew_config files beforehand. Further, had you changed sub type just prior to starting the patrol? I note that you said you went to the Crew Manager whilst mid patrol - SH3Cmdr can only look at the latest "in base" crew_career file, so if you made changes then started a patrol, they won't be picked up. Essentially, ignore the Crew Manager whilst you are mid patrol and especially if you are on your first patrol.
I can say that this is not an SH3Cmdr bug - if it was it would occur for everyone all the time (the code is very generic). However, if you are still not convinced, feel free to email me the career files and I'll have a look.

Thanks alot for a quick response, JScones!
I think this what happened have to be caused by what I did for realistic crew file in Cmdr. Yet I don't know what went wrong. Few things:
- There is only one career at time - so no possibilities I chose a wrong one.
- There definetly was listed 38 persons in the crew list. When I loaded up the game again, there was only 27 persons on board. One sailor seemed to have a wrong qualification. (I "gave" qualifications for 3 sailors third degree via editing the "realistic" file in Cmdr before my first patrol.)
- I didnät touched stock crew config files before launching the patrol.
- YES. I was on my first patrol in a career, that's correct. So this might be the reason...
Last, I don't think this is a bug because before I didn't get any problems with Cmdr.
I'll work on and I'll contact you via email if needed. Just one question to you here in the forum, the answer might be useful for other members too:
IF I would like to do changes in RuBs crew config files and then chose to use "stock" crew in Cmdr, will I got the crew I edited in RuBs file, or is this stock crew config file in Cmdr also? (I mean, will Cmdr over write my "stock crew" file in RuB?)

I assume you adjusted the correct crew_config file? Apart from the obvious (the file name includes the sub type that the crew list relates to), the three different files for each sub type also relate to specific years - 1=1939/1940, 2=1941/1942, 3=1943. So, if you change "crew_config_II_3.cfg" and then start a IIA career in 1939, you won't see your crew changes - even the crew names will be different.
IF I would like to do changes in RuBs crew config files and then chose to use "stock" crew in Cmdr, will I got the crew I edited in RuBs file, or is this stock crew config file in Cmdr also? (I mean, will Cmdr over write my "stock crew" file in RuB?)
Selecting "Standard SH3" will use whatever crew config files are already in the game - in this instance the RUb files, with your modifications, will be used.

Hello Jeasen!
Yep, I did select the correct file = crew_config_II-1.cfg for the year 1939 / 1. flotilla / Kiel. But if I understod your previus post right, the problem might be that I'm still on patrol. I think the next step I'll take is unistall hole system (also Cmdr) start again. And this time I'll edit only RuB files and then start new career to see what happens.
Just one more question to you:
When I adjusted that file in Cmdr I tried to give my sailors (2. and 3. degree) qualifications to mark their attack positions. The problem was that only watch qualification appeared in the game AND that it appeared to every sailor I gave a qualification. = I gave to sailor a qualification to act as steuermann (rudder / controls) but the game or Cmdr he was given a qualification to act in watch. I did everything ( when adjusting the file) couple times again before I decided to give watch qualification only to three of my sailors and leave others without any qual. I tried to be as careful as ever when I was dealing with the config. file but I couldn't solve the problem.
Basicly my idea is to get my crew looks like there's only youngest sailors and NCOs coming straight from the NCO school without any qual.
Thanks for your replies Jeasen!

Your crew_config file should look like:
[CREW_MEMBER_#]
...
Type=x
...
NrQual=1
Qualification0=y
...
Qual0=Yes
Qual1=Yes
Qual2=Yes
Qual3=Yes
Qual4=Yes
Qual5=Yes
Qual6=Yes
Qual7=Yes
Qual8=Yes
Where x:
0 = Sailor ranks with no quals (default);
1 = Petty Officer ranks with quals = 1 (default) or Sailor ranks with quals > 0;
2 = Officer ranks (default) or Chief Petty Officer rank with quals > 1.
Where y:
0 = Watch
1 = Gunner
2 = Flak Gunner
3 = Radioman
4 = Helmsman
5 = Machinist
6 = Torpedoman
7 = Medic
8 = Repair
To give them no quals, set NrQual=0 and remove the Qualification0= line. Change the Type value accordingly.
My recommendation? Try everything with the stock files first. When you confirm that everything is working OK (ie SH3Cmdr and SH3), then attempt to modify the crew_config files. If things then go south, well, at least you know the cause... ;)

Thanks alot for your help J!
I allready did a clean installation + got mods into game and after that I adjusted the "stock files". Everything is running perfect. I really think I had to do somekind of careless mistake before and that the problem wasn't caused by Cmdr. Because the system works equally both in the game and in the Cmdr I think there had to be some typewriting mistake I didn't spot. Sorry about the hole mess.
