View Full Version : Polish Fleet Mod
There has been some talks in the Polish forum about creating
a "Polish Fleet Mod". Now my question to you guys is, would you be interested in a "Polish Fleet Mod", in which the whole Polish WW2 Fleet is available?

I guess we take all .. as long as its good .. and free!
Seriously some action in the baltic during 39 would be fine for me, as long as it sticks to history. I agree with Polish resentment about being a major power in WWII and not being given credit, but as far as I know polish naval impact was limited, due to a small not very modern fleet, but thats just me. Certainly you made up for that in terms of courage.
Thank you for the very nice words.
During the Polish campain our fleet didn't do that much, half of the fleet was old while the other half was modern, but the fleet was way to small to fight the German Kiregsmarine. Most of our ships got orders to evacuate to England. It was later in the war that the Polish fleet had some victories. Things that many people dont know is that a Polish destroyer was the first one to spot Bismarck a couple of hours before her sinking, an other important thing that the Polish navy did was to find and sink the german ship Rio De Janeiro which was transporting troops for the invasion of Norway. This way alerting the allies and the Norwiegians of the German invasion of Noway.
Polish destroyers also served as escorts for convoys, this is where I believe that the "Polish Fleet Mod" would play its biggest role.
Once again, thanks for the nice words, I rarley hear people say things like that.
Things that many people dont know is that a Polish destroyer was the first one to spot Bismarck a couple of hours before her sinking,
ORP Piorun was the first naval unit to reacquire Bismarck 26 May, 1941 22:37 after it was first spotted by PBY-5 No. AH545 "Catalina" 26 May, 1941 10:10.
At 11.00 AM Capt. Vian (in HMS Cossack) recieved a radio report about the position of the Bismarck. He realized that the 4th Destroyer Flotilla was only 50 miles away and ordered to chase the enemy. Due to bad weather and high waves, the destroyers were able to maintain 27 knots speed (only two knots more than Bismarck), but continued the pursuit. Fortunately, British aircraft managed to hit the enemy with two torpedoes. One of them jammed the rudder and damaged the screws. The allied destroyers steamed in line formation, one about 25 cables from another. In darkness, Piorun lost contact with her British partners. At 2214hours lookouts spotted a large ship which indentified herself as HMS Sheffield. At 2237 lookouts detected another large ship. The Polish commanding officer Cdr. Plawski was afraid of attacking the unidentified vessel, because it could be HMS Sheffield again. Piorun used an Aldis lamp to transmit a signal. The answer was 6" gunfire, The detected ship was the Bismarck!!! Cdr. Plawski ordered to open fire with the six 4.7" guns. During 59 minutes Piorun continued transmitting radio reports and traded fire with German battleship achieving several hits. Of course, 4.7" shells were able only to destroy some light AA guns, but not to penetrate heavy armor. The Polish destroyer was making lot of evasive manouvers, because Bismarck also used her 15" main armament. The British destroyers appeared on scene and conducted a torpedo attack against the Geran battleship. But all torpedoes missed the target. At 2336hours Piorun lost contact with the enemy.
Just little historical clarification and also glad that the subject of Polish Navy seems to gaining some interest.
