So in the alternate war mod i am making i had to find a fjord in Chile to hide a secret u-boat base. and looking over the maps on line i found that area of PUERTO MONTT (which on my 1930s map was listed as just Montt, since it was not made an offical town until 1952) Anyway, it was an old German settlement and so i thought that would be the best area to begin looking for a fjord to hide a German u-boat base in. Of course in my alternate history, Chile - which sat on the fence and favored the Reich until after 42 - becomes a willing secret partner with the Reich, kinda like Spain, while staying offically neutral.

OK, so i searched the map and powered my sub up a few fjords and i found one that suited my tastes perfectly. i said - THIS is the best fjord to hide a german u-boat base in. So I built it. then today i was cruising the net trying to make sure a ship could actually get up this body of water since a game map is not always up to true spiff and suddenly i realized the fjord i had chosen was QUINTUPEU FJORD (i hadn't known the name before) in what is today the Pumalin park. Of course in the 1940s this whole area had no roads and was very rustic with no Tourists nor hundreds of Kayakers.

But the question i was searching for was had i chosen the best fjord to hide a sub base in? The entrace was a bit difficult and i wondered how easily a merchant could enter it (because to supply my base i factored in merchants flying false Swedish flags supposedly taking cargo in and out to a swedish mining complex. Swedes did mining in South America. Anyway....suddenly i ran into some very interesting things about this area....such as that the locals tell of hidden 3rd Reich gold being around somewhere....and then i ran across this, "...Quintupeu Fjord, where the German battleship Dresden hid out during World War I." I guess a large ship could go up that fjord! and it was apparently a place Germans might consider hiding something really big.

sometimes i amaze myself.....

of course our SH3 version looks more like the area would right after the last ice-age (few trees) but the real fjord is a place of seals, dolphins, and lush growth going up the sides of the cliffs - http://www.gochile.cl/eng/Tour/Tours-PK-Fiordos-Pumalin.asp

that first pic at the top is actually looking toward the entrance of Quintupeu Fjord as you look down stream toward the open Gulf area. in other words its looking out from the fjord. There is also a picture of a camp area in that fjord because on the north shore of this fjord there is a narrow flat area with small hills here and there by the shore. In the SH3 world these hills look like bare rock pyramids.
