View Full Version : Setting the Torp ceiling level to avoid Neutrals

I apologize now if this has been mentioned before but I'm currently testing out the minimum ceiling setting of a torp so that it avoids hitting Neutrals.

So far the testing ceilings have been 170 ft and 210 ft however the torp still home in and hit the neutrals.

Surely a torpedo at these depths would not hit a surface ship even if the torps modelled in DW exceed the ceiling by 90ft.

Hmm... I know I shot an Akula out from under a Super Tanker with a Ceiling of something between 140 and 170ft, so that should work ... or at least it worked for me back then.

Well, I had my torps set with a ceiling of 120 in a multiplayer dive. One of my torps went after a neutral, and I thought it just encountered a CM, because it never exploded. Afterwards, I saw on the replay that it was a civilian. In that same game, I also fried the enemy sub that was hiding under a neutral. He was probably confident that the neutral would get it instead of him.

I've read somehwere that the depth difference must by about 200ft. I guees it was Sub Command related. But it can be the same thing here. Such big depth difference make it almost useless.

The problem was that torpedo indeed did not cross preset cieling. It did acquire the surface target however, which can even be realistic, hard to tell how good sonar processor on the torpedo is. 'Don't cross 10m depth' is much simplier to do than 'don't lock on targets above 10m,however distant they are'.
The only problematic part was that torpedo exploded even under the ship. Like if it had too sensitive magnetic detonator.

If you shot from under the tanker, of course the torpedo did not explode, because it did not enable.

You got me wrong ... I meant I shot the Akula that was hiding beneath a Super Tanker with an Air Launched torpedo. I think there is even a AAR somewhere around of that.

Here is the link to the AAR over at the CADC (I digged it out from the OW Forums) : http://www.orionwarrior.com/forum/showthread.php?p=19076#post19076

Amizaur found that 100-120ft is safe for most neutral ships, although some ships, most notably the supertanker, can be hit by torpedoes as deep as 200ft, if I remember correctly.

So, be sure you do all your tests on vessels of different drafts. :)

Cheers,
David

I start to think seastate has to do with different outcome?

Did a few test with a cargo, some times the torp explode at 160 feet ceiling, some times it don't?

OIC .. somehow the torpedo locked on Akula .. I can Imagine that in such case it will ignore tanker completelly, especilly active torpedo which knows how far from target it is.

I can easily belive that the ceiling preset is viced by a lot of error. How does the torpedo "know" what depth it is at?
Probably a pressure-meter? If so, at those high speeds probably can't work exactly...

Probably an inertial navigation system or the like, based on gyros similarly to the ww2 torpedoes. Simply put, if it knows what depth it starts at, it can know based on that.

Simply put, they can be rather accurate.

The game engine knows the depth for sure :-)

I don't think it is actually measured by virtual sensors :-j

Good point, seems do-able
