Hello. I'm confused on the FFG towed sonar, and how to figure a contacts true berring. I'v read the manual, but still don't get it. I know you have to track it, then turn the ship, and use the resolve, (star, port) but I end up with more contact lines on the nav map than before. Any help would be great. Thanks, Jim.

Good to see so many new players.
Resolving bearing ambiguity is simple once you grasp the concept. The way the signal is processed, the TA can't tell which side the signal is coming from. So you have to resolve the bearing ambiguity.
So let's say you have a contact and you turn left to resolve. If the contact moves up the waterfall display it is on the portside. You can tell this because the contact is moving UP the waterfall display and therefore you must be turning towards it. If it were to move down, then you would be turning away from it and it would be on your starboard side.
Did that do it?

^^^^ What he said.
To visualize this, draw a birds-eye view. Imagine you have a contact that is at either 030 or 330. If you turn left, one will be further forward than it was on your original course, and one will be further aft. Hence, if he draws up the array, you turned towards.

Easier way: assign a Tracker to the contact and you'll see two specular contacts on the NAV map. Manouvre and look at the LOBs on the NAV map: the one moving (clockwise or anticlockwise) is the WRONG contact... ;)

Thank you very much, that was one of the most simple explanations of the ffg towed array sonar I've read.
The manual isn't very clear on this point.

Best used in multistation with an instructor.
