View Full Version : Help with Steam
Help. I have been playing on Steam for quite some time with Half Life and DW as a stand alone. I just downloaded the patch 1.03 and can't figure out how to get it to work with steam. Thanks in advance.

That depends on what your issues are Splash. Please be a little more descriptive on how you can't get it to work.
It looks like you've run into this problem...

If you've downloaded the Steam version, there was no need to patch it.
The "stand-alone" version , as you called it, is not yet compatible with Steam.
By this i mean that yes, you can play against Steam players (as long as you have patched to 1.03 - as Steam version is already at 1.03).
But i dont believe they have worked out yet how to allow/enable "stand-alone" versions to load into the steam browser (or whatever it uses) yet.
I do remember Jamie mentioning something about them trying to though

Thing is what advantage do I, with a standalone copy of DW, get by being able to integrate it into Steam?
I can meet people to play with on GameSpy, I don't have to download anything...
So is there any real reason to do it?

I quote myself from a older thread.
That’s a good question. You see, I use steam for a lot of games. Most of the games I play at this time are available over steam. If I’m entitled and it’s possible I would like to have DW in my steam account. As you probably know, each steam account is unique to there owner, so I could log on to any pc in to world and once steam is installed to it download any of the games in my steam account. In the next few mounts I plan to get a new pc. First thing I’ll do after setting it all up is put steam on and leave it downloading over night. Next morning all my games would be there patched up to date and I’d be ready to go. In fact the only other game I regularly play is Red Orchestra which will its self soon be available over steam. I’ll still have the cd’s if I need them, but for my part I’d find it convenient to be able to load it in to my steam account. It gets patched, and if any expansion packs become available over steam (hopefully :) ) then I will be able to pre-load them and play them the very minute they become available.

Hmm, if you have a few PCs but still can't really see it if I have the one machine.

As Winston has already said; I like STEAM. And when I bought Dangerous Waters it was already at Rev 1.03. I also play HL2 which gets regular updates as I suspect DW will. I can also make a back-up to another drive, cd or DVD of the game just in-case my current drive goes south. I can quickly click on the backup executable and reload the game. As far as Stand-Alone, I am curently still learning this game and have not tried Multi-Player but I do know that I can play Solo without the STEAM Engine being up. I will have to eventually try to play Multi-Player but from what I can see I do not think there should be problems playing on any Server in the world but I am new to that aspect and there are others more versed in that part of STEAM.

So the only way to use the game on the Steam Server is to download it from Steam. I bought the game when it first came out and I'm sure that there are a lot of us out there in this same "boat" that would like to use the Steam aspect of the game. If you buy the game from a store, how do they get the game to install with Steam. Thanks.

Backups. If you have a steam registered game and, god forbid, something bad happens to your discs, you're still ok. You can just run it through steam, and if you need to reinstall you can download through them.
Fairly useful, I think...
(then again, I went and bought a second copy through steam because I DID lose my discs, before finding out that they were working on being able to merge into steam... DOH!)

That functionality has not yet been completed by Valve/Steam... as soon as it is, I will let all of the S.C.S. newsletter subscribers (http://www.scs-dangerouswaters.com/newsletter.html) know about it.
In other words, you'll know as soon as I know. :know:
