Many threads make reference to wave format needing to be 44khz, 16bit, mono, PCM to avoid sound problems. This appears to be mainly where existing files are stereo but is the 44khz the important bit i.e. are 22khz and 11khz files OK as long as they are 16bit, mono, PCM too?

FWIW, I won't mess with any sound-settings in SH3, (changing format, or attributes such as quality, bit-rate, stereo/mono, etc).
It's easy to crash the whole game, merely by changing a mono .wav file to stereo.
The only changes I would make is perhaps a sound-patch/mod that fixes default sound-files, and only if needed.
You might try a test, changing sound quality of a often used sound-file (i.e., upping kHz quality). You'll know pretty fast if it's acceptable or not.

I use GoldWave for my conversions:

It lists all the parameters for the file, so you can convert from stereo to mono and keep the other numbers very close to what they were before.

Hmm that may be true what you say. I didn't try sound-tunings the way you mentioned.
When setting different sounds, I tried to increase sound quality (and bit-rate) greatly. Once a few game crashes occured, then I didn't dare change any original settings :ahoy:

Thanks for the replies. I have modified my sound files (oggs excluded) in respect of the 16bit, mono, PCM qualities but still have a mix of 11, 22 and 44 khz. Does that matter in terms of preventing sound related crashes?

I'm not sure. As I said, when I did my conversions I had stereo crashes, so I converted to mono but kept the numbers as close to the originals as the program would allow. I haven't had any problems since.
There is one major change I made which didn't have any problems: I downloaded a large pack of German songs for my gramaphone, and for some reason my computer likes them in .wav rather than .ogg, which is the opposite of what most people report. When I converted them to .wav I stayed with the machine's default, which was 'Signed 16-bit whatever'. I've had no problems, but that's just with the open files (all the stuff not in the 'Speech' folder) and the gramaphone. Now way would I try that with the 'Speech' files.
