Well I went through all the steps on the community manual, including the SP2 fix, and the game will not launch in 1280X1024. I can see in the cfg that the resolution is right. I put the files right in the SH3 install folder. It didnt overwrite anything so im assuming these files never existed but this just wont work.

Its one problem after another for me with this game. Im new to this game, but after coming from a technical masterpiece of PC gaming named Guild Wars, this game feels like it was rushed and unfinished when it was released. It's nowhere near the level of polish that a game like Guild Wars has. Did they run out of money or time? It's very buggy.

Did you try rebooting since defining SH3 in the MS Application Compatibility Toolkit (ACT)? :hmm:

If so, go back into ACT, delete what you defined and redefine all over again. Then reboot and try starting SH3 again.

Works for me and I have not experienced any major bugs with this game since I bought it last May.

Is there other way than using the tool kid thing?

I tried but just didn't work, in fact it just make the game crash prone.

try this http://www.simhq.com/simhq3/sims/boards/bbs/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=129;t=000995;p=2, second page of the topic, near the bottom.
Sartori created a batch file which should work too.

OK i'll try these different things out later on tonight.

I've had various problems since i've gotten the game. I have mods like Harbour Traffic which just won't work no matter what I do. It either crashes my game or won't let me start from a port. It starts me in the middle of the ocean.

I've had graphical issues with not being able to have a nice glowing sun, and anti-aliasing at the same time.

That's just the start of the problems i've had with this game. It's really frustrating.

I tried all this. It just refuses to launch in 1280X1024.

I know this may sound silly, but when you say that it refuses to launch into 1280x1024, what do you mean?

I'm using the patch, same way that the community manual instructed, and when I first tried it, I didn't think it worked either, until the game loaded to the sub area, ie, when the game starts and you're in the sub. Only then did I notice the massive change. Everything was much sharper and crisper.

If you're not going all the way into the game to be onboard the sub, then it's hard to tell if it worked or not. At least it was for me.

Normally I play the game in a 1024X768 window. My screen resolution is 1280X1024. When I go through all the steps from the comm manual, and launch the game full screen, it looks blurry. This is because this method isnt worth and its trying to stretch it to fit my monitor. Its definitely not doing anything with me. Im so annoyed by it that I dont even play the game anymore. It looks blurry in full screen. I can play in a window and it looks OK, except for the fact that I can have anti-aliasing and a nice looking sun. I cant seem to get the game working or looking the way I want.

This is just a matter of personal preference, but to add a contrary opinion to all this and perhaps ease the people who can't get hi-resolution to work, I will say I successfully changed my game from 1024x768 to 1280x1024 and yes, it was very good looking, smooth, and ran similarly in both resolutions. However, after an hour of testing all this, I changed it back (actually I reverted to a backup of my SHIII folder). Two things bothered me. First, the much discussed inability to alt-tab out of the program. Once you're in it, you're stuck in it at the higher resolutions. Because SHIII moves so slowly, I like to do other tasks while navigating from point A to point B (and one very nice thing about this game is that even when you're working outside the program, time is still passing so you're not wasting time by doing other things ... try it, it works). The second thing I didn't like (which is admitedly very small and could probably be fixed easily) is the sector numbers on the map. For some reason in the higher resolution they came out very pixilated and wrong.

Anyway, bottom line is if the higher resolution was infinately better looking than the standard, I'd still be playing it. To me, the difference wasn't noticeable enough to keep it that way and sacrifice being able to leave the program.

Of course each person will need to test this, but for those who can't seem to get it to work, trust me when I say (at least in this poster's opinion) you're not missing all that much.

I definately agree with Markquinn, it is a personnal preference. I too noticed the pixellated sector numbers, buy chalked it up to some nvidia vs. ATI annomoly.

For me, the game looked far better, so that's why I still use it. The alt-tab thing is kinda irritating, but that's alright, usually the only time I need to exit out is when SHOOT.EXE starts acting haywire, and I need to reset it.

Sorry about your troubles man, don't know what else to tell ya.

Well I decided to live without 1280X1024 full screen. Ill stick with 1024X768 in a window. But all of a sudden, anti-aliasing wont work anymore. Normally I change the setting on my vid card from application controlled to 8xS and that makes it nice and smooth. But it wont work anymore. The game is always aliased. I tried doing the Shift and +/- keys but all that does is make the sun brighter, and the game blurry.

I'm convinced it's impossible to get things the way I want in this game. Is it just me, or is a game like Call of Duty just so much more friendly than this. Maybe thats because that game is way more successful so they have more money to refine things. SH3 is one of the clunky, unrefined PC games i've ever played.

And while im on this rant, is it just me or do the ports and the terrain in this game, even when modded, look absolutely horrible? Well im sure you can tell im annoyed with everything about this game.
