View Full Version : getting rid of 'BATTLESHIP'

ok - no one wants to tell me how to turn KGeorgeV into a Japanese ship. Perhaps that was good, cause it caused me to find something else better - - what I always hated was that even on the most foggy nights or storms, if i could catch a tiny peek at a ship it would flash "King George Battleship". Even with the automatic helps all turned off i still would see "BATTLESHIP". But at long range and at night and in storms this would not happen. Only sonar could detect what the CONTACT was.

so anyways, i was asking myself, since i want Japanese, and American battleships - do i really need 3 fricken Brit battlewagons? A meter deeper for this torpedo, a meter shallower for that torpedo? Big deal, i said crew it, the Brits will have ONE BB, the Americans will get one and another BB will become just BATTLESHIP - to be used by any nation. the trouble was the UZO and God-map would keep showing the Japanese BB as Revenge Battleship.

But then it hit me..... simply change all the names in Data/Sea/EnglishNames.CFG to CONTACT. So then, for example - BBKGEORGEV=King George V, becomes BBKGEORGEV=CONTACT. Everything becomes CONTACT. And with this done it actually pays to turn back on the automatic target identifier, since with it turned off (100% Realism) even specks on the horizon still read out as BATTLESHIP.....which i hate. But with my new list and with auto-identification turned on, now all i see is CONTACT. Be it DD or BB or what ever. And with the auto-map on all i see on the little circle is CONTACT. Add to this the grey color changes and other like fixes and suddenly in a storm you actually have to use sonar or get really close to your target.

one more thing, if i had reorted to making new Sea directories for each ship and throwing in those piles of files for each, all that would only add to the weight that SHiii would load into memory. Using my CONTACT list instead i can now have ships of many nations without loading down memory. Of course they all have the same skins, but one has to balance this with the fact that now many nations can quickly have many kinds of ships.
