View Full Version : The Grey Wolves Supermod - Impending Completion

Salute! Fellow U-Boat Kaleuns,
After three months and hundreds of hours of work, it is
my pleasure to announce the impending completion of "The
Grey Wolves" supermod.
Until now our team has largely worked in silence for a
number of reasons and rumors have been plentiful. I
haven't spoken of it sooner, because we were just too
busy building it.
First and foremost I tell you now that it is a FREEWARE
mod compilation and is in no way related to any nefarious
entity.
The Grey Wolves will be a stand-alone, one-stop-shop mod
compilation incorporating many bugfixes that will likely
appeal at least in part to everyone. Our intention from
the beginning has always been to build a mod that feels
COMPLETE and is useable by everyone without the need for
continuously updating to new versions. Enough new
and different content will be included, that GW be
totally interesting in its own right. We will of course
offer updates as new things come along that can't be
ignored, but it should be a simpler process than before.
We also realize that everyone among the modding community
faithful has their own personal set-ups. GW should be
compatible with most and/or at the least easily moddable
to include your favorite flavors.
At the moment I don't want to go into exact detail, but I
can tell you this... We have changed the look and feel of
almost EVERYTHING in SH3. No major sim element has gone
un-modded. The Grey Wolves will also carry the largest
and fullest campaign world currently available in SH3.
We have focused on "immersion" and "visual realism" to
hold hands with our efforts towards simulator realism.
You can also expect to see many of the best graphics
available from the subsim mod community from both new and
old artists. We truly hope to make new and old players become
attached to their U-Boats and crews without giving up and
throwing the game away in disgust.
Primary contributors and fellow Grey Wolves have included
Marhkimov, Rubini, Gouldjg, CCIP, Rulle34, Syxx-Killer,
Pablo, Type941, NippelSpanner, myself, and in many ways... all of you.
Every day now, hundreds of our war veterans pass from us
and take with them priceless living history. We intend
to make more people interested in learning about the men
who fought in these "Iron Coffins" and lived the Battle
of the Atlantic.
It will be a large download when the time comes... but prepare to have your socks blown off!!
Prost!

I am going to be very conservative and say that we hope to release in three weeks or less. HOWEVER, we will not sacrifice quality for speed. If we need more time we will use it.
Regarding further details... lol well, I said I didn't want to go into further detail... but since you asked.
Our U-Boat damage model is an amalgamation of the Hollywood and Diehard mod... further tweaked and tested by me and Marhkimov.
We will also have two realtime fatigue variants for you to choose from.
I will be going on-duty for 24 hours very soon. In the meantime, maybe some of the GW team can say more.
See you all on Wednesday.

I have to say that Marhkimov, Kpt. Lehmann and the others have put much much more work into this mod than I ever did.
I was with them in the beginning but had to leave games totally for a period of time including the next few months which kind off let them down.
I always knew this team had similar ideas and were capable of producing something that will rock the sub sim when done so I was happy to leave my uncomplete work in their hands.
I have read tonnes of emails concerning the amount of hours that was spent by every member of the team in trying to bring some totally new and brilliant graphical work as well as expanding the world. Not only this but they spent many an hour re-doing music etc.
You guys are in for a treat with this mod and what is good to know is the fact that this will have further support from the mod devs for some time to come.
I envy you all as I cannot play it till June (exams over and work more stable)
Well-done Greywolves

I know a LOT of work went into this mod. It is simply amazing what has been changed. I'm sure you all are going to love it. Seeing how much went into this mod, I kind of feel "insignificant" being as I am only a tester. And let me tell you, the version that I tested ran solid. I was surprised at the changes that were done. This mod will have a special place in the Silent Hunter history. :ahoy:
It sounds very interesting!
How many MB should I reserve for this on my HDD?
What about realism - better than RUb?

Compressed, if I remember right, was over 400MB. Uncompressed it is probably 1GB.
Sounds very good :)
What about performance? Will it slow game performance like the atmosphere mods?

depends on you.
the player will have the choice between 8km and 16km visibility and some other things. its in a "additional mods" folder. for me, there was no difference to my former version (modded with high traffic campaigns and 16km).
so i say "no"... but dont wonder if it does when you run it on a slow system - logic ;)

That's in the eye of the beholder.
Should everyone that wants it have a nice clean install to install it?
I would recommend it. The mod changes LOTS of things, so if you have a custom SH3 install things might get dicy. You don't have to completely erase your custom SH3 install, though. Just copy the Data folder somewhere else. That way if you ever wanted to play the custom one again, all you have to do is move the data folders around. You will, however, need quite a bit of space to move those folders around. I've got four different Data folders layin around, and they like their space. :88)

Will this mod utilize the SH3 Commander file structure? I have hundreds of files in the dates and random section within such as new and rusty textures, different tonnage, crew clothing, etc... It puts a little random element to the sim.
I'd like to read readme.txt as fast as it's possible - could you post it ?

Can we get a light version of just basic campaign combination like the uboat wars, harbor traffic, and others put together? Thats all I really want.....I dont really care for any of the other customizations. I like picking my own sounds and textures. Plus it saves bandwidth and storage space by not having all that extra stuff people will be changing to their own personal taste anyway. I mean the only standards you really need for a "supermod" are for multiplayer connectivity everything else should just be modular via jsgme. Otherwise you cant roll with the times. For instance will this new Captain America Fix for compressed air and other gauges be included? http://www.subsim.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=48865 as far as I know he hasn't released it but, it is something forthcoming...and needs to be one of the standard fixes for an install like yours.....something like this might throw off your whole "supa" system if we have to pop it in after your release.

No. You'lll most likely be able to install the new mod after you're docked back at base, when you complete another patrol. Then you'll be able to continue your career and start the next patrol with the new mod installed.

WOW guys please have a little patience here. No one is
going to delay the release of the mod. We also will not
rush it through the door and sacrifice quality.
Furthermore, I've become rather ill at the moment and
work 24 hour shifts every third day for my city's
ambulance service. All members of the GW team have real
life jobs and families to attend to as well.
(We certainly owe a debt of gratitude to our families for
tolerating our long hours and all-nighters.) :yep:
I will answer a few questions here.
There will be no wolf-packs, since in our opinion a
satisfactory representation of them has not yet been
created. (But hey! More tonnage for you :O)
We will not post a readme just yet (I'm sure you guys can
understand that a readme may have to change moment by
moment until release day.) We will post a readme as a
separate download on release day for those of you who wish to see what is included.
Besides, if we posted a readme now... what would be left
that would surprise you later?
Regarding campaign content. I have already stated that
it will be the fullest campaign world currently available
that you can sail in. This remains true.
Regarding the picture on the first post... It is an
in-game screenshot that has been heavily Photoshopped. It
is one of many all new loading screens by Marhkimov.
Unfortunately, you won't be able to get your boat to pop
out of the water like that because it has quite
un-realistic side effects in-game. :( We tried though.
We have been very careful as well to keep things fully compatible with SH3 Commander.
We've dropped lots of hints at what is included and we
aren't trying to make anyone angry by keeping some things
quiet. We just don't want to ruin the experience you
will have when you fire up GW for the first time.
We aren't going to pretend that we can make everybody happy... but we are certainly going to make many extremely happy. You can get your realism AND immersion in one place. Also, just like any other mod, you can change parts that you don't like. If you don't at least TRY GW... you will be missing out.
LOL, at the very least... we have the coolest title! :smug:
Cheers! Mates :ping:

This is excellent news. With so many developers working together, I am sure thet the final product will be a blast! :/\:
It must be very difficult keeping up with the latest developments in SH3 (I mean the last 2-3 months) and making decisions on what will be included and what will not (for the first release)
- SH3 Gen
- SH3 Weather generator
- Advanced Holywood Damage / DiaHard
- Upcoming version of HT
- IuB update
- Uboat War Ace
- NYGM series
- Lastest finds in Map editing
- Latest finds in thermal layers

Heavy work continues... final major pieces come together tonight.
This will be followed by approximately 10 days of testing.
I know you guys are hungry.
Paul Mason of Paul Mason Vinyards said, "We will sell no wine... until it is time."
Guys... I'm not having fun by trying to leave everyone hanging... but I will say it again.
Until we are certain that it meets a pre-defined standard of quality and content... we aren't going to kick GW out of the door.
I'm sorry guys you'll just have to be patient. Some things happened that slowed me down for a few days that couldn't be helped.
However, rest assured that the GW machine running in the background... is again churning at all ahead flank!

It would be sad to see two totally different sets of campaign files and the another one is missing the good parts from the other.
NYGM has already approached the Grew Wolves to see how we may work together, either as two seperate Mod's or as a team to ensure that we minimise having a fractured community where no-one gets the best outcome.

Maybe each release your own and then afterwards combine what you can into the Ultimate Uboat Realism Mod.
Teddy,
Guys,
This is really all we want here. I'm not the GW's Project Manager but my dream, as a SH3 modder, is to unify these great works. These are the core of a great new game. I already said to Teddy that I have all my campaign files (mods) as a separated files, then will be easy to merge them with some adjusts. This is also true for graphical/sound parts. I should like to propose now that the next update of these mods must be a unified version of them. Both use RUB 1.45 as a base, both have the same goals, both have great modders (and some modders are the "same person" on both teams!!!). And i'm sure that Teddy Bär and Kpt. Lehmann already knows that any team members will decrease with time because the modders have a real life and others games to play. It's the natural way. So, merge the GW and NYGM team and the mods itself will be not a difficult task. I only suggest that this could be done before the next first update, this way both mods will have time to clearly find their highlights and downsides but they continue similar, so the merge processes will be yet possible.
But in my mind I yet dream that they already begin as only one....
IMHO!
Rubini.

Good work anyway
It is, perhaps, worth pointing out that the NYGM mod contains new ideas (predominantly those of Teddy Bar and Observer) to make the playing of SH3 more realistic. In this sense, NYGM is the true heir of the now defunct RUb ('Real U-boat') series.
The Grey Wolves project (judging by the pronouncements made to this date) is more concerned with improving the graphics of SH3. That is why you will need to store a full gigabyte of data on your hard-drive. Unfortunate if you use a dial-up modem!
Only individual players can decide which they prefer.

... and having a choice is better than no choice :yep:
I have a lot to say on these matters, and no time to say it at the moment....
The idea of "The Grey Wolves-TONNAGE WAR!" does have a nice ring to it though.
LOL, if it were to be called "Not Your Grandmother's Grey Wolves" we might have problems.
At any rate I think both teams (at least this one) need some time to catch their collective breath. I don't think any of us are ready to rush into something pell-mell.
... just completed a 36 hour modding marathon triple checking important GW elements.
We have a beta now and I am uploading it for the team. Beta testing will begin tomorrow and should only last 7-10 days. We've done a great deal of testing as we went along. Please don't feel like we are leaving anyone out due to some sense of superiority. There are reasons for everything and the clock is running.

Due to the impending release of this mod, I have in the last three weeks, completed three 5000 word assignments that should have taken we a month each to do.
I have 2 more to go and then I am overloading myself for exams just to get my hands back on to the game.
At work, I sent all the managers on managing safety courses and parked safety firmly on their laps (where it should have been in the first place).
No longer will I stop and folly around discussing how the temp is too hot or too cold in the workplace (woman workers always pick on that subject am I am sure you will probably know). There are more serious risks to attend to.
MY words are "go see your manager" in a nice way of course.
My boss loves me cos I have set all new policies up etc. He thinks I am a die hard works man. (does not pay any extra though so will be leaving him in June if no rise after exams)
Little does he know that I am only doing this so I can play SH3 longer after June.
Now I could say, I hope it will be worth it, but I know for a fact, it will be a howling  success and it is my first point of call when I set up a new campaign.
For me, it will provide the base of the game and should I wish to change aspects i.e. try some features from NYGM, I will shout out on the forums and as usual those whom create these things are in the main, glad to help.
Anyway got to go back to work now and convince the board that we need an assistanst in the safety dep (yet more workload release).

I'm so happy that this mod is coming out.
I just picked up this game on a whim. I used to play all the sub and chopper sims. (gunship2k, apache 2.0, ssn-21, seawolf, etc...)
The mod community has certainly churned out a huge amount of stuff. But it's totally overwhelming. It'd be really nice to get one huge download full of high res textures, with all the visual range, gauge tweeks, historical uniforms, proper flags, supply vessels, good harbour traffice, etc.... all in one pack.
I'm so confused right now. I've just downloaded 20 mods, but none of them had reviews or ratings or anything. Some of them are replacing the same things i'm sure. Most didn't have screen shots to show people what has changed.
For instance there is the shIII hi res texture pack, the militarymod packs, the same for non-military, etc... which one should i use?
There's what seems to be 20 million gauge texture packs....
Some of the medium size packs bundle in small mods which just confuses people more. (and possibly has an older version of another project, which overwrote your never version depending on where it is in the patch manager.)
I hope this pack is awesome, I'm just looking for some nice new high res, correct assets to spice up the game. The visual range fix is pretty good to.... I hope all the little cloud fixes and everything go in here so I don't have to make a huge effort of installing patch managers and other nonsense.
-confused with HUGE number of cool patches, wishing for an easier solution.

Another I cant wait post. Ive been off SH3 for more than half a year now. The 8 km visibility thing just broke it for me, an unforgiveable design choice made by Ubi. I noticed that it has been moded recently to some succes, but as others have noticed, theres a hojillion bazillion mods, and knowing where to start is almost impossible. I tried RUb once but it goes too far for my liking.
With your mod I hope to be able to resume my submarine career :)
I've only got about 60 mods installed and SHIII is and looks a whole lot better than stock. Did I say I don't use RUB or IUB? I don't but Grey Wolves does sound interesting.
But then again I don't play with max realism either. I like my outside views for screenshots. And the Weapons Officer was put on the boat for a specific job, which he does quite well. I'm the Kaptain and I say so. LOL

If I would not beta testing GW I would playing NYGM. NYGM is obviously a great mod, not to be missing. But after the GW release you can choose.
In the end this issue will be only decided by the player's taste...I also have doubts, I also like Teddy modifications on way to play and then this is why I made (but it's yet in "test") the Unified Campaign. Let's see!

Note to all. Lately I have had the choice to either work hard to meet our intended release date window or post details here. (trying like heck to release by midnight March 21)
Beta testing is going well and is keeping me quite busy. I want GW to be finished and available for all, just as much as you do.
I also want to tell you much more than what I have time for.
I have only recently been able to step back far enough to get a good look at all the trees in the forest... and this mod ROCKS!!! I myself can hardly believe what we have built.
SH3 goes from Ford Pinto to Ferrari!!!
BELIEVE THAT! :yep:
Warning: This mod will be a larger SH3 file download than any other that I am aware of. This will present difficulties and we will overcome them.
In days following the first release. We hope to offer multiple download locations and options.
Preferably too I can post the readme one day before release.
This may be my last informative post for several days so that work can be finished.
Cheers guys.
Anyone who is interested in doing so could cross their fingers in hopes that we don't run into any major problems in the home stretch! :ping:

Im probably gonna reformat my comp when this comes out, but if u gimmie some kinda idea of whats gonna happen, maybe i dont have too. Just a little preview be nice, whats new, whats changed. bla bla. ANYTHING. :) But i can wait.. Just i love when u guys come out with mods, its the only reason i still play SH3 :|\

I am wishing you guys well, don't think I'm not. I appreciate what you're all doing and can't wait to actually try it out. However, I've yet to see anything.
What have I modded? Nothing, I'm not a modder nor do I have the time or dedication to do so. As I said, I appreciate it.. without the current mods I'd probably quit SH3 after a few weeks.
I hope your mod brings some of the many missing elements to the game, the minor details that Aces of the Deep and even earlier games had but SHIII has neglected to add. You gotta love when a publisher rushes a game, especially when they rush a game and drop support after barely getting it working correctly.
Mostly what I am saying is like a good movie that is over-hyped... don't do the same for your mod. Suspense is all good but when you leave the changes up to someones imagination for an extended period of time you're setting people up for not a shock at the accomplishments you have achieved but a let down at what you haven't. So, don't set peoples expectations too high.
You have a good team and I'm sure the mod will be great but don't let it's greatness be overshadowed by overexpectations.
mkubani
03-13-06, 08:04 AM
I got to agree here. We are all looking forward to this mod guys, but overhyping something does no good to anyone.
Usually, there are two ways of introducing someone's work:
1. Either with some steady stream of WIP screens and discussion regarding the mod, finally followed by a download link.
OR
2. A complete surprise out of blue that nobody expected to come at all.
You guys took a middle road I guess, saying how great it is (without actually showing anything to us), but also saying you want to make a big surprise. No wonder people get a bit frustrated here, not to mention some modders may feel a little insulted by those statements.
I guess you could really ease up the tensions here a bit by posting just couple screenshots or giving 1-2 few modded features. Since you claim that virtually everything was modded (that was possible), such small preview would not take away any big surprise from the final product. Please try to understand us too. :)
Anyway, I wish you successful beta testing and looking forward to the release. Just please make sure you set up enough mirrors for download. :)

SCREENIES, SCREENIES, SCREENIES (LOL) :know:
So let me just say a cople of things to all the guys that lost pacience
and are as much as me in a hurry to have this Mod...(No bad intentions on this Mates)...
What do you guys prefer, .... ;)
Lots of info, cool screenes, everyday picks and news, and,
whayt 1 weeck for this Mod , and after when it comes out
pump into your PC full of bugs and imperfections, that whill be solved with patch after patch,(Kind reminds me SHIII going on
Shops :shifty: ) ....
Or simply give this guys a brack and most of all time to finish the
Mod,and upload it here in perfect launch capacity....????
I think, that you know ,that beside their Mod developement,
each one of them have,to sleep, food cofee, daily lifes, and most of
all trust and compreention from all off us....
I to whant so badly to try this Mod as you guys, it's only natural, that they say (Cause They are doing it) That it's a good mod, great , brilliant, or even the fullest ever made, and most off all if it's ready to come out or not, and if it's ready to be described or detailled in given info....
This stuff takes hours, days, of concentration, in front of the computer, fatigue, sadness, impotence when what we whant is not coming out as suposed to be.... :-?
So let us be pacient guys, this and you are a cool great community, and i really enjoy reading your posts , some times i even spend more time here that with mi real life...but this is puting them
on a every day stress, and under pressure!
I know nobody is badlly intentioned with this, but....
Give them a brake guys!!!!
With the greatest respect to all!
I have been meaning to ask these questions...
Will this work with SH3 Commander?
I wont play anything that cant use it.
Also what kind of options will you have for people to pick and choose what they want from this mod? What I mean is this..will the mod be user friendly in terms of being able to install or not install any parts that are not wanted?
Or is the mod built in such a way that we as users will have no control over what parts we want or do not want and everything will be installed like it or not?
This is what always has bugged me about mods like RUB and other all inclusive mods. The lack of ability to have options and choices to use what we want and what we dont want.
SH3 Commander added alot of that choice ability back which I love to have.

To all... double and triple checking elements continues at a now furious pace.
During the upload process on Saturday, I will be posting a list of features and mod-list. I also hope to upload a screenshot package that you can grab if you like.
By Sunday evening I hope to have at least two locations on Filefront that you can DL the Grey Wolves. I know that lately FileFront has been very slow, but I expect that this is a temporary situation.
Later in the week I will do my best to break GW into smaller pieces for a split file upload th Rapidshare, but again this has its drawbacks.
Thanks to our friend Terrapin, GW should be available readily at his awesome SH3 website... U-Boot.Realsimulation.com by the end of the following week.

The problem with FileFront though I believe to be temporary. It hasn't always been that slow.
Total bandwidth/availability is foremost in our minds at this point and we are taking many steps to help alleiviate the problem.

Filefront definitly has problems. Today I was trying to download 44 M and it took 4 hours :nope:
Bittorrent is a file sharing protocol / application. There are a lot of bittorrent clients, all of them free. What it does, is that it basically facilitates downloading / uploading from one user to another. No ftp / central server is required for this. Just a site able to host a small file that contains addresses of other users where you download / upload (which is called "tracker"). It is very popular with Linux distributions, since they are quite big. It is a very fast method, ideal for a release such as this,
Other than that, the file can be shared over the existing eDonkey / eMule network - Emule client is freeware - This is a little bit easier to use for a beginner. It is not as fast as Bittorrent, which concentrates on a single file, but can be qute fast, esp. if the uploaders have adequate B/W. See http://www.emule-project.net
Learning curve for both is 1-2 hours.

Yes Filefront sucks latelly, to slow, and most of the times depending on the file size they just cut the download on the midle and you've got to download all over again....

We are going to upload it... whether we feel it is perfect or not... THIS WEEKEND! :yep:
The only thing that will dictate the exact moment of release is the physical act of going through the hosting process.
I will keep you posted every step of the way. Uploading is predicted to take some hours though. Today I will be doing a small file test upload to Terrapin's site to make sure that all is well.
Tomorrow (Friday) I am on duty for 24 hours and away from internet access. (I am very tempted to call in sick lol... but considering I have only recently recovered from illness... methinks that would be a very bad idea.)

they are basically client programs that allow you to download files (ie movie, games, music) off of bittorrent websites. the files are taken from a seeder or seeders as well as other peer users. so basically the more people who have the file than the faster your dl goes.

A small corection.
a torrent file is ONLY a small file with a Hash nubmer and some information about the REAL Files. Now a torrent SITE has only these HASH = INFO files stored and NOT the main file itselfe.
Standard procedure is that the MAIN seeder makes the "torrent" file normaly a rar file splited up in packages, then he does anounce that torrent through a tracker (torrent site) and from there the Ppl can DL the info File and start to DL the torrent packages.
So the First seeder needs to have a fast upload line untill there are more copies of the whole file are distributed by other seeders.

Okay guys,
I am breaking GW into parts and compressing it per Terrapin's instructions. I will be uploading it to his site first. This process will take much of the day today.
PLEASE NOTE!!! :stare: :stare: :stare:
Hammering and pounding on his website will not make it appear sooner and causes his site to have problems.
Please respect Terrapin's wishes and bandwidth. Read the "News" sections of his website for info regarding this. :stare:
At noon/ 12:00 Central Standard Time U.S. I will make my first posts on a new thread and will include the readme there.
I will do the best I can to answer questions and post additional info there throughout the day.
WE ARE UPLOADING THE GW MOD!!! By tomorrow night (my time) there will be maybe two additional locations for you to download GW... but both of the places that are not related to Terrapin's site have their own problems.
FileFront is HORRIBLY SLOW!!!
Rapidshare makes you wait "X # of hours" after you download a certain amount of data.
Thats the bad news.
The good news is... we are getting GW out and up one way or the other.
Great news! Just finished my WaW patrol and the next one is about to begin, the release came just in time.

You should have uploaded it in secret, the general mod section in Terrapins site is down again! God damn people, what if somebody wants to look at other mods in that section, think! :hulk:
This was an unforseen circumstance.
Relax man... you'll get high blood pressure.
We can't thing of everything... as much as we'd like to.
I imagine too that the offending parties, really didn't know what they were doing.
It was a surprise to me as well.Sorry if i came across that i was angry at you, i wasnt. Its not your fault people dont understand what you wrote.

I would suggest that if it is OK with the GW team, that we could share / distribute it through the eMule / eDonkey network.
If someone is so kind enough to post the filename, once it is download it would be appreciated.

Fercyful proposed that he could make a bittorrent yesterday. That would be great, it's faster than eDonkey or Emule and can handle alot connections at once.
Of course first someone must have the whole file to seed before we see any torrent. :)

I will do my best to accomodate you guys in this way... but it will likely be tomorrow or Tuesday before I can do so. :ping:
Todays uploading processes will likely demand almost all of my time today.

Because the sooner I get it uploaded to public access websites, the sooner it is generally available for all... and per prior agreements.
I can do but one thing at a time... try as I might. Furthermore I need to have a better understanding of the "torrent" issue and I have yet to have time to self-educate regarding the same.

Good idea. Emule / Edonkey is far more widely used than BT.
