View Full Version : Does the WAA help solve Towed Array ambiguity?

In a customer mission that the Towed Array instantly detected the only ship in the mission.
However the WAA gave readings only on the Eastern and not the Western Track.
So i assume therefore only the Starboard Hydrophones on the WAA were picking up sound and therefore resolving the ambiguity of the Towed Array without me having to make any turns to resolve the ambiguity?

Am i right?

Thanx

Maybe. It would depend on whether you were able to determine if the WAA and towed array were, in fact, seeing the same target. Since the sensors have different properties, it's possible to see one target on one, and another target on the other.

The way to resolve this issue is to look on the narrowband display and see if the two contacts give off the same tonals. Unless you can see their full spectrum there's still a chance you can be wrong but after 2 or 3 tonals, depending on which ones they are, it might be worthwhile to chance it.

:D Yes Hachiman - broadly it can help to resolve TA ambiguity.

In MP, sometimes with a lot of traffic, you have to make decisions quickly and the SA contact is a good way of
resolving the ambigous contact and merging the two in TMA for a master contact.

I agree with SQs ''maybe'' - more caution may be necessary in some cases where target selection is critical
or where the contact may lie on a bearing near a potential target.

The new LwAmi 3.0, under test at present, resolves the SA bearing error so now you can get a very exact
intersection of the SA and TA tracks.

You've misread my notes.

The SW SA had previously lacked the setting that all other passive sonars had in the database regarding bearing error, even all other SW sonars, and now I assume after looking at the sonars countless times and countless times more that this is an oversite, so I have set the SA to be like all the other sonars in terms of bearing error.

 Indeed - not too difficult to 'misread' the eleven words covering the topic in your 'Working Issues.'
In fact short of any notes or readme in the Final (Beta) I am sure I may well have spent two days Testing
on many 'wild goose chase' apparent or real issues which will give rise to further 'misreadings.' Stand-by !

Still its all in a good cause. ;)
