How do you change it to 1280X1024? I found the below link, but it doesn't seem to be what i'm looking for.

I'm interested as well. Even on the Wiki, the solution I have found doesn't work for me.

I think mine works but, I can't change resolution...I did all the steps someone mentioned a cfg file that wasn't installed...I only have one file in my sh3 directory called sh3.sdb for the database file you create.....anyone know what generates the .cfg to change the resolution after you install the database file?

Have you all used the instructions based off the community wiki page? I followed them, and it worked like a charm. I double checked the cfg file it talked about, and it was set to 1280x1024.

I run SHIII at 1600x1200 via this.

The config is with the dll. Just open it with wordpad and change the resoultion settings to what ever you want and save.

You can't alt-tab, you loose some cntl and alt functions and your screenshots are done via the print screen button and look horrid, but the images in game are fantastic.

What DLL? There is a lot of them.

Can someone explain how to change this? The wiki site is down.

I'd venture not to guess at it, but I would wait for the site to come back up, they had excellent instructions. The ones I found on the subsim.com site seemed to be lacking some details.

Yeah I looked around on here and couldn't seem to find anything solid. Hopefully they'll be back up soon.

I tried the solution provided on Wiki and it doesn't work for me.

I've read later that it only work for people with WinXP Sp1. I got SP2, no way I will revert this to 1.

Yeah rolling back to 1 would be a very bad idea.

Hi!

Here's how I changed my screen resolution:

1) download the dx9res10.zip file from terrapin's site (http://u-boot.realsimulation.com) under "Silent Hunter 3 Tools". The zip includes the necessary .dll and .cfg files.

2) Unzip the file and follow the instructions in the readme.

3) After the files in the download have been installed, use the Microsoft compatibility manager as follows:

After it is installed, on the start menu, go to "All Programs/Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit 4.0/Tools" and run the Compatibility Administrator.

When the program opens, make sure New Database is highlighted under Custom Databases, and click the Fix button.

In the "Name of program to be fixed" box, type SH3. Now, click the browse button, and select the sh3.exe in your SH3 install directory.

Click Next.

Under "Operating System Modes" select None.

Click Next.

In the "Compatibility Fixes" box, check DelayDLLInit, and click the Parameters button.
In the "Command Line" box, type d3d9.dll and click OK. (You can click the "Test Run" button to make sure it is working.)

Click Next.

Click Finish.

Click the Save button, name it SH3, and click OK.

On the File menu, select Install.

Close the Compatibilty Administrator.

You will need to update your main.cfg files to use the desired resolution. Note there are TWO main.cfg files: one in your .cfg folder, and one in your ...\My Documents\SH3\data\cfg folder. The game uses the one in "\My Documents\...."

Hope this helps! :)

That's a little too involved for me. It's not that important to me. Thanks for the post though. Im sure others will find it very useful.

Agree, I'm happy with 1024 res. No hassle and still great scenery

I got two questions for you guys:

First: I´ve got a 19" SONY LCD Monitor and running SHIII at 1280x1024 resolution, Windows XP SP1. Game crashes at startup if I try a resolution higher than that (I am using dxd3.dll and Application Compatibility Tool). Is there a way to run, say at 1600x1280?

Second: Because of my monitor, I got a certain degree of image stretching (image appears a little compressed from the sides). Is there a way to correct this? I´ve tried running at 1280x960 but the compression remains. Could it be that the monitor automatically adjust the horizontal and the vertical ? (geez, it sounded like THE OUTER LIMITS)

1. Most likely if it's a 19" LCD monitor, the max resolution is going to be 1280x1024. Concerning LCD's, you usually have to go to at least a 20" monitor before you can get the higher resolution.

2. The crashing is odd. I'm upping my rez to 1280 on an LCD and the games never looked better. No crashes nothing. Are you sure you did the modification properly? There are other things you have to do if you've got XP, at least that's what my instructions told me. I would go over the instructions again, of see if someone has a copy from the Community Manual, that's what I used.

3. I'm not getting the texture compression either, I would just double check you're not exceeding your monitor's resolution specs.

SH3 works on my system at 1280 x 1024 resolution but I'm using Windows XP SP2. The SP version may be an issue, but I'm not sure.

Thanks jbt and Pablo. The CTD only occurs when I set a resolution higher than 1280x1024.

SHIII runs OK at 1280x1024, only with some image stretching. I will try disabling the autoadjust feature in my monitor and go over the instructions for resolution change again in case I missed something.

Hi,

SH3 works on my 19" LCD but I also got some image stretching. I have tried disable the auto adjust without succes. Anyone know how to solve this problem?

No go. The only way I´ve found to correct stretching is to manually adjust the screen horizontal settings. I don´t know why but I haven´t found a way to adjust the vertical in my SONY LCD 19" monitor.

Nevertheless I have to readjust screen size when I exit SHIII so I can have all my desktop in full view.

I wonder if this is an issue with all LCD´s monitors and SHIII. I have a Toshiba laptop with an extra wide screen and SHIII images also appear stretched. My guess is that the origin of this problem is the difference in ratio between horizontal and vertical screen dimensions when compared with CRT monitors and I don´t think there is a way around this. What puzzles me is that this does not occur with other games like Flight Simulator 9.
