Here is a Beta of the OBS you can Download and try for yourself. Keep in mind this works great in game as is it's just that at night the RedMask will not be perfect.

I am continuing to work on this but have been asked by a few to share it now if I could so here it is:
Church's OBS Beta via FileFront.com (http://download.filefront.com/4770775;7ad187b4e5215785fd34df7ea90b6a6e24122bddba cca8477ebc1b1de7161a8e7a0bc1e3569ceebf)

I am working on making a diffrent Observation scope. I have a question I thought I would ask here.

Do you know if it is possible to use two diffrent masks for the scopes or do both need to use the same one?

Thanks in advance.

There is only one mask for both. ASFAIK

wow...nice looking scope! you should just make it by default red...that is what they did in the low contrast version of the bordinstrumente mod....i like having the red by default anyway....

I think so you must to change the names for the textures the file menu_1024_768.ini call.

Obs periscope is the group G2B

Make the new textures, rename them, and change this names into the file menu_1024_768.ini in the G2B group........

*Bump*

Church SUBSIM, I am looking forward to this mod. Great work and idea. The "sameness" of the attack and obs scope has often bothered me. Question though...is the oblong shape of the lens historical?

Do you have an ETA? Thanks.

Church SUBSIM

I can not say that it is historical. One thing though is that it does not give you an advantage over the stock scope. If anything, your range of the horizon is limited but you gain a little in the vertical. I wanted this scope to be used for the basics, pre surface checks (weather, aircraft, immediate ships, etc.)

The only issue with it right now is the mask. I am trying to figure out how to use 2 masks in game. Right now, the circle mask is ok, it works but is not perfect.

I also want to tweak the image some more but I am currently using it in my game. Instalation is a snap (a simple edit to your existiing menu.ini file .... just change the name of the texture that calls for the OBS.

I will get a working version up today and you can see what you think.

Any comments on it are welcome.

Excellent!!

"If anything, your range of the horizon is limited but you gain a little in the vertical. I wanted this scope to be used for the basics, pre surface checks (weather, aircraft, immediate ships, etc.)"

Well I believe it was often called the "sky scope" by the U-crews so the vertical shape is certainly workable.

Many thanks

Excellent!!!!!!!!
Can't wait for the release of this mod.
As a suggestion, I would try to make the obs. scope as much "used" as possible: scraches, dirty on the lens......and some "age" around the lens, on the scope metal body.
Again, very good work

Thanks for the feed back and observations!

Yes, the issue I have right now is that this looks factory fresh. She needs to be spit on, beat up and have some coffee spilled on it. I have managed to make a much more improved series of textures that work towards that means and I have it working now.

I am still tweaking it but it should be good to go soon!

At the moment I am hell bent on making a series of NAV Contact Mods to be used in conjunction with RUB 1.45 and am almost done (to my liking at least.)

Redwine .... damn .... I love the bearings file you use. That is really nice. I have downloaded this mod and to be honest, the idea that you had with changing the look of the two scopes is great. My thanks goes to you for spuring me on to do this little alteration.

One other observation that I have .... I tried to remove all the torpedo firing options from this scope but it seems that they are still showing up from the main attack scope texture. I need to look into it more but ideally I would like to remove the ability to fire torps from this scope.

Thanks for the link Tikigod. Very nice reffrence.

In the mod you have two giant strips for bearing chart, use them if you like. Plus i add a second scale, a Vernier type, so you are able to read 1/10 of degrees. I was posible in real periscopes, using an external giant bearing strip, it is modelled in SH3 but sadly is only decorative, it doesnt works. :hmm:

About the look, if talk about the pin-ups... , you have two sets, one with modern look, and another old fashion one.
Just to make the life more beautiful..... :rotfl:

My thanks goes to you for spuring me on to do this little alteration.

I soupose thats the correct way..... we need people at job to have many more wonderful mods...

Thanks for the kind words and I am glad you are using it/enjoying it.

I think once this one is done it will be time to do a version of the attack scope as well.

Just d/l'ed and installed it.
I really appreciated the minor .cfg edit (in the readme) instead of the dreaded "replace the entire .cfg file" thing.

Superb job. I've waited for this mod for a long time.

what makes it a beta? is the accuracy off?

Church SUBSIM
02-18-06, 05:20 AM
Thanks :)

What makes it a beta is the fact that I am not done with the textures and graphical elements. In terms of accuracy, it's spot on.

I do know not know the language of the menu.ini but I am trying to figure out a way to create a mask for it that is seperate from the circular one of the attack scope. Once that gets figured out and the textures tweaked .... then it will be a finished product so to speak.

Right now it is very useable, very accurate.

I am thrilled that it's actually in someone elses's Mod pack ;P

Would removing/deleting/masking the tube/torp buttons on the bottom of the scope .tga remove them from the scope when it is shown in-game?
Or is it not so simple?

Church SUBSIM
02-18-06, 02:54 PM
I tried that and what happens is the images are picked uo from the attack scope.

I also know that there are calls in the 1024_768 menu.ini that tells SHIII where and what buttons to place. I really need to learn how the speak geek so I can edit that without fear of spending another 35 hours wondering what *exactly* I did wrong when it comes to that ;)

I also see the red masks in that file too but there are so many, and I am not exactly sure how it works.

If anyone can help me with finding the tube buttons, fire buttons and the red mask for the OBS scope that it would be most appreciated. I have the redmask file ready to go .... just need to know how to add/edit it into the 1024_768.

U-Schultz

Well I am hardly an expert but I did take a look at the 1024_768 menu.ini....Yikes!

Many entries for the periscope.tga and the "button calls" seem obvious enough for this .tga.

Off the top of my head one idea would be to "break" the connection (in this .ini file) between the attack scope and the obs scope by adding a new group/item...essentially duplicating the attack scope entries (for the periscope.tga) but making them reference only your obs scope .tga and eliminating the "button calls" by the 1024_768 menu.ini for this new group.

Looks like much work (if it works!) unless some of the .ini gods here have something easier.

Any progress made on the ini or the tga? I see that you were busy with the radio mods and the nav icon mod. :)

Just checking to see how it was going.

as of right now the scope works and I almost have the redmask done. Matter of finding the time to get it wrapped up. Soon ;)

Hi Church, traying it and looks so good !!!

Only a little sugestion, the vertical reticle is not well visible, may be it is better if you make the viewfinder a few pixels more wide, so in this way we can watch the vertical reticle better.

Many thanks for job....!!

Hi Redwine,

Thanks for downloading it and giving it a try.

I am not sure I understand what you are refering to in your post. I am looking at mine atm and the vertical is well within the scope's field of view. I am running at 1600 x 1200 via the res dll but I get the same results when I remove that dll as well.

I was wondering if you would be willing to take a screen shot and illustrait for me what you mean.

The only thing that is covered so to speak is the mag number ... that always bothered me so I saw it being covered as a plus.

Thanks!
Church

Sorry Church....was my mistake. :damn:

Because i had my Obs Periscope, i install yours as Attack one.

So it looks like this....

http://img83.imageshack.us/img83/5434/newperi2wn.th.jpg (http://img83.imageshack.us/my.php?image=newperi2wn.jpg)

I can invert them......

But any way, it is not bad idea if you make yours a few pixels wide, so the people can install it at any position, Attack or Observation...at customer pleasure.

Ahh gotcha .... yes, it is not designed to work as the attack scope ... although last night I was doing some reading and came across this little nugget of information .... that the attack scope was very narrow and designed to produce minimal wake .... the OBS scope had a much wider angle of view and was used more so for navigation and when not in harms way ....

So with that in mind .... I am going to make a new attack scope and make the field of view much more narrow ;P

Thanks Redwine!

Hey btw ... what is that Officer Icon mod that you are using? I would love to get a hold of that one.

For that i let my modified Observation one, and use yours as Attack one.

Your narrow view one give more feel to be an Attack one.

I will attempt to make it a few pixels wide........

Just a personal choice..... many thanks for job !!
