I have just bought the game, but the number of mods and add-ons are enormous! Is there a guide to the most important/essential mods? Or any recommendations? Thanks!

The first file I'd recommend is JSGME mod-enabler. This auto-applies 'most' mods (if not all) and easily removes them too, at:

I don't really use any of the largest mods, but rather a pick of the ones tested and enjoyed. There's a bunch of 'em too! :)

A good way to find out what mods are very popular; read the mod-forum (or regular SH3 forum) and check the number of 'Views' for any given topic (or 'Replies' too). More 'Views' (especially in the thousands) shows a lot of interest, and is usually a popular mod.

If still not sure, you might want to mention the type of mod you're looking for; hard-core realism, a single collection of mods in one file, certain graphics, sub-skins, planes, ships, etc.

As average Joe said you will need jsgme.

There a two main mod packs that people generally use:

Most people use Real Uboat 1.45 as a base for all other mods, or Improved U-boat 1.2 (which is RUB with some extra skins and nifty features, good if you don't want to waste time looking for mods).

you can download most mods at terrapins site http://www.u-boot.realsimulation.com/

Thanks for the comments. If I am primarily interested in reality mods and mods improving gameplay and game interface, what would you recommend then?

Yup, 2 good ones as Boris mentioned are Real U-Boat (RUB) and Improved U-boat. Both are large mods geared towards more realism. They contain
many-many mods bundled into one package.

Make sure you have enough computer power to run 'em :|\ Maybe 1GB+ of ram, a decent CPU and 'faster' video card really helps.

SH3 Commander is another neat mod, offering lots of detail and realism to the sim.

My specs: P4 2,8GHz, 1GB RAM, GeForce FX5600. I hope that is enough - Also to run some of the more "heavy" mods.

Are there any mods within the area of "eye candy"/visual improvements/variation that you recommend?
