I spot a small merchant & line myself up for the intercept and wait submerged till she is real close.
She gets about 800m I make a final check of her colors - the flag definitely has a "union jack" and I refer to my ship recognition book; for I had never seen what almost looked like a British naval "union jack" (red on white) on a blue field with 4 red stars. Only was a guess it was New Zealand and that either:
a) I am have a bad book; on manual on my game New Zealand is red background, white stars
b) I have some strange GPU/card issue
c) having a bad day and I was seeing things
So question is do I have a bad manual or just getting bad graphics?
TIA

Hmm... Are you positive that it isn“t an Australian ship? Or am I missing something...? :88)
Its obvously a kiwi ship, merchants have the country flag flying, and that is a new zealand ship you saw. I think the flag shown on the manual is the military flag... ie. German merchants fly the nazi flag, but kriegsmarine vessels fly the kriegsmarine flag.

Thanks for the replies

Huh... I'm absolutely certain though, that in the game australian merchants fly the blue national flag, and pretty certain that the new-zealanders fly theirs also.
I take it this is a mistake in th game?

Yep, the Blue Ensign did not come into existance until AFTER WWII. And its never been used by Merchants in a state of war. Its now only flown at the Highest point of the Mast when a Merchant Ship enters a Port. At all other times the Red Duster (Red Ensign) is flown from the rear most Point of a ship (And on a mast, jackstay of some kind).

Educational :know: thankyou all!
I did indeed make a minor mistake in that the flag I saw flying must have been Australian.
I spotted another one of these merchants in the Mediterrain CN25. This time I made a screen shot then compared it to a picture of the current Australian flag - they matched I had missed in the first encounter the additonal marking directly below the unionjack.
It makes sense but as the learned Cdre Gibs points out this is a post WW2 flag but the ship id book shows I guess the WW2 version in red?
Again my thanks for clearing this one up. Was worried something more sinister afoot - like a bad video card or driver corrupt.

Ok, here is a wee lil Flag Patch. This is not a MOD release nor shoud it be countered as such. Its based off Serg's work and some1 else's that I can no longer remember who. It has included markings for AC to match if you want it. There is no readme as I dont consider this a mod. Just unzip and copy or cut and paste into your SilentHunter III Folder.

PS: The "Marking under the Union Jack" is the 7 Pointer Star of Federation of Australia. 1 Point for each State and Territory, bar 1, the ACT.

At the risk of being flamed for being pedantic (or maybe I'm being precious because I'm moving to the ACT next week LOL), the seventh point represents *all* of Australia's territories, including the two mainland territories and eight external territories:
-Ashmore and Cartier Islands (pop: 0)
-Australian Antarctic Territory (pop: a couple of transient scientists)
-Christmas Island (pop: 1300)
-Cocos (Keeling) Islands (pop: 600)
-Coral Sea Islands (pop: 3)
-Heard Island and McDonald Islands (pop: 0)
-Jervis Bay Territory (pop: 600 Navy dudes)
-Norfolk Island (pop: 2000)
Hehe...I love some of those populations...
Ironically the extra point was originally added to represent the Territory of Papua...which is no longer an Australian territory!

Great stuff gentlemen.
Up here in the Rocky mountians I feel like a crazy old hermit sometimes. I have been to Europe several times and traveled by ship on the Atlantic & Baltic but I confess tunnel vision (limited sight) when it comes to the Pacific and our friends on that side of the world. Maybe a rebellion issue - my dad served in Pacific Theatre never talked much but he seemed to have great like for the Allies he served with....
Please keep posting might be the best flamer I ever started.... ;)

Well I'm only going by what I was told in the Army. This is by no means the "Correct" History, but that was the info we were given as to how it was Originaly desigend. As to what it now Politicaly Correctedness means is another thing entirely. As always things change but its origins are definatley not what they mean now.

Unfortunately, your lecturer was wrong.
The addition of a 7th point to represent Australian Territories was announced in the Commonwealth of Australia Gazette No. 65 (page 1709) on 19 December 1908. Although Australia only had one territory - Papua - at that time, this foresight was not surprising as plans were afoot for the creation of a Federal Capital Territory, which officially came into being with the NT on 1 January 1911.
I don't think political correctness existed in Australia in 1908, or even 1911 when through conscious decision it was beyond doubt what the 7th point represented... ;)
The change over time means that the 7th point now covers the creation of any new states as well, but we'll see what happens if the northerners (either NT or FNQ "Capricornia") ever vote for statehood (Aussies may recall that NT voted against it in 1998). Although there's prolly more chance of NZ becoming a state before FNQ... :rotfl: (tongue FIRMLY in cheek here guys).
BTW, is the NZ merchant flag incorrectly modelled in the game with 7-pointed stars, like the image above?

Nope, the stars are 5 pointed, only thing is in the original unmodded game, the flag is blue and not red...

Thanks. This thread has reminded me that I've never actually come across an Aussie or NZ ship in the game!

I am eating this learning for breakfast my friends - one thing to read books, another to have real people to discuss with :know:
JScones I found so far two NZ small merchants near CN25, the Med second week of Jan '41. Then later an enitre contingent of Australians at Tobruk.
That was going to be a subject of seperate post but I will brief it here:
Early to Mid Jan '41 low on fuel and ammo docked at Tobruk - failed to read my history books and ended mission in the then Italian held port. Restarted with a great surprise date Mid Feb 1941.
Tobruk had fell to the Australians during my resupply.
A game bug? or just something they did not account for but I am chugging from the dock at 01:00 (unaware of the change) wondering how am going to navigate the narrow little port in darkness with all this traffic. Suddenly watch is sounding a warship spotted and the actions screen pops up.
:hmm: must be that Tribal I dodged to get here a few weeks ago, about 10 to 15 km away. Yet instinct says periscope depth and that I did. Only to my surprise to learn at up scope when I look at the harbor traffic its not my antagonist Tribal I had dodge. But its a V&W sitting not more than 3km to my starboard. I am frantic scan the "traffic" docked/sitting around me I realize I am in a bad bad place indeed...slow & surrounded in shallow water.
A troop ship, an LST, a tanker and a C2 all flying the Australian colors!
Not to mention now sound contacts - 2 more DD cruising about 15km away...seems we might be better to spend the duration as guests of the Royal Navy then fight.
Yet by luck and maybe a bit of skill - all silent & barely scraping the sea floor - U-97 clears out and leaves three of the four cargos at the bottom.
One the more intense 3 hours of real time I have ever had in this great game :D
Pure Luck!
