Church's War Radio Mod v1.0 Read Me File
Silent Hunter III Gramophone Mod by Church
February, 2006
Version 1.0

Installation:
------------
This gramophone pack is designed to be used with Sub Commander 2.4 by JScones.
The files are added to the Dates folder found in the following directory:
C:\Program Files\SH3 Commander\Date

Simply Point these files to the SH3 Commander directory and install. The news and broadcasts in this mod *will not* over write the pre-existing radio files that come with Sub Commander, rather these will augment them.

General Notes:
--------------

All files are named "war_radio". All files are in the .ogg format.

Day 1 of each month (ie: 19390901, 19391001, 19391101, etc.) will contain a new monthly radio broadcast combining all broadcasts and programs for that given month, so there may be times where you may hear a speech or a program before it actually aired. Due to limitations, I found a monthly solution worked best to maintain a reasonable sense of current events.

Please note that 90%+ of these broadcasts are from England or the United States. Some of these broadcasts are from the US and focus on America staying neutral or focus on US issues. For the most part these broadcasts are at the end of the months news program. If you do not like to listen to it, you will simply be able to advance the gramophone to end it. I found these programs helped give a better sense of where the US was at in terms of the world conflict and find it interesting to see how that all changed on December 7th. Just attribute them to atmospheric bounce ;)

I have had no issues with the size of these files bogging down the loading process via Sub Commander 2.4 or Silent Hunter III itself.

Be warned. This is a large Mod. Almost every file exceeds 20 megs....but it's well worth it.

I hope you enjoy this mod.
Church

Will this work with the stock game ?

Church SUBSIM
02-09-06, 03:37 AM
Yes, this will work with the stock game. It is not dependent on any mods but is set up for ease of use in conjuntion with Sub Commander. Each Month, Sub Commander will over write the previous months news cast and replace it with a more relevant one.

If you do not use Sub Commander (and I would ask you to give it a try) then you could simply extract the files to your desktop and manually rename them by month and year and then manually place them in the gramophone directory.

What are the benifits of using sub commander Church ?

Church SUBSIM
02-09-06, 04:32 AM
Sub Commander let's you manage your career and crew unlike any other utility or program available. You can change names, alter the way certain config files are used, determine what boat you have at the start of a career (dependent on what flotilla you are in) and you can also have files (like sound files, sonar settings for warships, textures for ships) update as the months and years progress. It is stable and extremely well supported.

Do a search for it on these forums, as it is pretty heavily discussed. I would never play without it.

No you don't have to delete any files at all, nor will it overwerite any.

Check the Dates folder in the Sub Commander directory and look in a 1st of the month directory (ie: 19391001) and see if war_radio.ogg is in the gramophone folder. If it is not then it was not unzipped right.

You should simply need to point to the sub commander folder and unzip.

The read me is very detailed as well.

Ive just tested this mod some more, and the volume is quite low on the recorded audio. It makes it hard to hear, but it wont help switching place with the radio guy (duuh). I was just playing the april/may 1940, and those audio was way low.

For the next release, could you please increase the volume? It shouldnt be too hard as I think there are tools to do inc the volume on a selected audio files.

No problem Steve...

I know what you mean but I know that the subs could pick up English broadcasts. The Americans .... well I like to think of that as atmospheric bounce :)

What I like about this mod as that no matter how good we are at focusing on the historical side of the sim, sometimes hearing the actual broadcasts of the time really sends you there. To get a real sense of how active the American's we at trying to stay out of the war. Amazing to have it in game ... at least for me.

I am working on '43 and '44 right now.

I agree Steve (although, I'm keeping this in the grammophone). Although I understand ~20% from the German radio, it makes you feel like you were there.

The first time I heard the "stock" grammophone of SH3Cdr in 1939 about Prien's success in Scapa Flow, it was awesome...

Is there any way to increae the volume of the first few files? When I play them the volume of the sub engines overwhelms the voice. Would lowering the volume of the fx effets or voice in the SH3 options due this? I tried to raise the volume of music in the controls, but to no avail.
There is a program in windows that will raise the volume, but I think it only works with MS wave files.

A little OT: Filefront seems way slower than rapidshare! With rapidshare I managed 40 out of 48 K/s (using DSL 384 line), which is like downloading directly from my provider!

BTW, filefront gets blocked by Protowall (IP block filter), so I had to de-activate it. This is not good news...

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Church

Hi, I have a pretty extensive collection in the grammophone courtesy of the reichskammermusik which I don't want to lose - one question - will adding this affect my music or can I enjoy them both together? BTW, for some good music head on over to http://www.thepaganfront.com/brangolf/music_e.html

Thanks!

Can these files be used with SH3Commander 2.6? When I follow the readme instructions and copy to the appropriate file it wants to override the existing files. Is this the correct procedure or will I mess something up if I do this? Thanks.

I just unzipped them to the main SH3 Commander folder, that is:

[drive:]\Program Files\SH3 Commander

and they all ended up in the correct sound/gramophone folders, in the correct dates, alongside my original files in those folders, with no mention of overwriting.

BTW, the U-Boat RealSim site seems to be back up and if you go there you will find music etc to last you forever and a day. Click on SH3 Downloads, then on SH3 Gramophone downloads and there are 37 zipped folders with 1GB of music downloads! German hits from 1910 to 1945 all in different year folders. Enjoy!

It was really Church's advice in his 'read me' note. I must admit I did not follow it correctly the first time and tried to install the files direct into their respective date folders; I also got the 'permission to overwrite' request so went back and read Church's note again. Then the penny dropped.

Would it be safe downloading from the site after all that hacking business?

I always run a AV check on downloads no matter where I get them from, however, something strange does appear to be going on at the site. I downloaded the first small file '3 30s Tunes.zip' (6.46mb) just to test it and it downloaded very, very slowly. It scanned OK with my AV but then it would not unpack: 'The archive is either in unknown format or damaged'.

When I tried to download some of the bigger files from that page, they opened as pages of gobbledygook code instead of the download target.

Anyone with more computer experience care to take a look?

I did the very same thing, had the same result. The small 3 30s file wouldn't open after I got it; said it was corrupt so I deleted it. I scanned it and it said there were no viruses (using McAfee). I tried some of the bigger ones and was given a link with nothing but that same gobbledygook. I'd be wary of it until we get an all clear.

When putting in the radio mods manually - should I put the dated files in the church's pack alongside the dated folders in the SH3Commander folder? Or should I take the individual war radio OGG files and put them in their corresponding dated folder in SH3Commander?

Put the individual files into the dated folders already in SH3 Commander.

I know it's an olddie. Maybe there is a new thread. About the radio mod any german version? I mean we're in an U-boat. Why a crew would want to hear Allied propaganda instead of hearing german propaganda.

Try the German forums (?fori) or WAC. There probably is something close to what you are seeking.
