View Full Version : HELP! where is ship blast controlled?

the other day i was shelling a small coastal merchant from about 100 meters when it exploded, i think it was an ammunition ship. The blast destroyed my boat . So today i was shelling a ship and being careful to be at least 200 meters away when it blew up and killed all my men on deck - it must have blown my AA gunner into bits cause i could not even move the body into the front torpedo room with the others who died. my sub sustained an instant 40% damage and listed to starbord all the way home.

so my question, one of you mod gods must have seen the specs somewhere in the SH3 data that spells out just what the blast radius is for exploding ammunition ships! what's left of my crew could sure use that info. :dead:

Rather than unnecessarily modding something, my advice to you is to stay farther away from your victims; at least 350-500m... Otherwise you will be a victim too!

honestly i haven't felt this bad since 9-11. my gun crew and torpedos had just finished off 15 ships in a perfect convoy attack - i know it sounds unrealistic but the conditions were these, mid 1940, large convoy far out to sea, no planes anywhere, perfect calm weather, moon lit night, only one DD defending it (don't blame me that's what Improved Convoy generated) and my first eel took out the DD by accident, the destroyer being caught in a squeeze of ships. so no escorts left and nothing but all the time in the world to sink ships from the surface at point blank range and yes i am using a delayed deck gun setting of one shot per 15 sec. but i had all the time in the world. i have never lucked out with this level of perfect conditions before. i was so happy on this last ship, the one that exploded, that i had just put on my swing music. then boom - no more gun crew and AA man!

if no one knows the answer to the range i suppose i can set up a test mission and shoot at a docked ammo ship from several ranges until i have the whole thing charted out.

As far as I know of, there are only impulse and radius ranges for bombs, torpedoes, depth charges, and other weapons... I haven't seen any input values for ship explosion ranges.

That's why you should just keep your distance. Real captains had to stay away from exploding range, and so should you!

Next time, don't get so close. Obviously, you will get hurt from exploding ships.

Also, even if it's nowhere to be found - remember that there's always a certain amount of random variability built into blasts. So that one time you might survive something fairly close, and at another time - get killed by something farther. That's the case with depth charges, and that's the case with everything else.

In any case, I wouldn't put much hope into changing it at the moment - it's probably in one of the data files somewhere, but where we're not sure...

It is normal, according the ship to be safe you must to be far than 500m.

Some days ago i had my last torp, i attemp to be so near to avoid a missing shot, i shoot a cargo ship from 350m and....... :damn:

CCIP - good point, i keep forgetting the random results. i suppose i will just have to stay our 500 m from now on.

I am not sure about random effects, if you play de Avon Lady mission called Royal Flush, you will be killed "always" if you hit the ship below the 500m far. :88)

I think that perhaps it could depends of the cargo specified in the files

[CargoEntry 4]
NodeName=Ammo Containers
LinkName=Container
StartDate=19380101
EndDate=19451231
CargoType=1

in my last patrol i stay at very close range firing with the deck gun

The ship don“t explode but when it sinks and capsize, the masts fall over my submarine withouth any damage. :rotfl:

If it explode i could return to base flying :rotfl:
