OK, I'm pretty new here. But I''ve been lurking a bit. Here's what I'd like to see:

There are two major mod packs: IUB and RUB.

What are the similarities between them?

What are the differences?

Once you settle in RUB, what mods should you add? What mods are known to break RUB and should, therefore, be avoided?

Same question for IUB. What needs to be added and what should be avoided?

1. Install SH3.

2. Install Patch 1.4b.

3. Install ResFix

4. Install JSGME.

5.a. Install IUB.

5.a.1. Install what addons?

5.b. Install RUB.

5.b.1. Install what addons? -- BTW, http://www.theavonlady.org/thesh3faq/ has a great list for this already. Half the work's done.

6. Install SH3 Commander.

7. Install Shoot Package.

So, now that we have a general outline, how about some of you old sea dogs put together a fleshed-out list and build a stickie for the top of this page. And maybe keep it updated every month or so...

IUb includes [most of] RUb. If you're looking for a maximum number of features, no need to choose between them. :hmm:

If, on the other hand, you don't need all of what IUb offers - RUb + Commander + extra mods for graphics etc. will serve you fine.

It's my understanding that IUB adds things to increase playability while RUB removes things to increase realisim.

But I dunno.

In any event, the readme for RUB states that it contains a slightly outdated version of RUB.

That's true, but only a little outdated (1.44 vs 1.45). There is actually no massive differences between them; there really haven't been any fundamental changes to the core of RUb since 1.43.

RUb doesn't remove - there's many addons, ranging from sounds to graphics to new ships that come with it, but unlike IUb, it is limited to include only essential mods so that the file size doesn't go out of proportion (just compare the downloads!)

Yes, RUb does have a more staunch focus on realism as opposed to more features; my personal view is that RUb is also somewhat better-tested - though neither RUb nor IUb are perfect.

Also, the fact that RUb is "less playable" is a myth - especially once you install SHIII commander to go along with it. The most 'controversial' features of RUb such as fatigue, gun reloads and water density are easily-adjusted with that program. Another benefit of RUb is that SHIII commander is made with that configuration in mind.

I think it all depends on what you're really looking for. Both are a great improvement over original SHIII, either way.

Personally, I don't use either, and because of that I strongly suggest that you DO use one of them - because it's a pain trying to keep all those mods together :rotfl:

'Commander' is certainly a tool that the game should have been boxed with.

Or better yet, those features should have been in the game to start with :hmm:

Yes, whatever you choose, get SH3 Commander. It's not really a mod but rather a program, but it's so useful and adds to the game so much, that it's easily the best addition yet. :yep:

I agree. I hope the SH4 devs lurk around here and pick up the idea to include some/all/whatever of the SH3Cmdr features as standard in SH4...I dunno if I have the energy to build an SH4 Commander!!! :rotfl:

I can't run IUB on my computer because the frame rate drops to 1 or 2,espiially if I use harbor traffic. With RUB 1.45, I get respectable frame rates. I think IUB contains the 16 Km atmospheric mod, which is the cause.

Orgy has left the modeling comunity, apparently, and has not posted for a long while. I PMed him about perhaps an upgrade but received no reply.

Is it possible to remove just the 16 Km mod and replace it with the 8 Km mod? On a faster computer this is not a problem.

Irish:
What you do is download one of the 8km mods and install it AFTER you install IUB (if you are using JSGME).

That way the 8km mod files overwrite the IUB's 16km mod files. I know because I do it the other way around, I use RUb 1.45 and load my 16km mod after RUB 1.45 so I get 16km visibility versus RUb 1.45 8km visibility.
