I thought I should mention this, though perhaps you all already have it, but this site http://blog.wfmu.org/freeform/2005/03/charlie_and_his.html
has a great Nazi Swing selection for your U-boat radio - by Charlie and His Orchestra. As the site states: "The idea was to lure the masses in with the irrestible tonic of swing music and then slyly work in the anti-Jewish, American and British lyrics after the second or third verse. The broadcasts of Charlie and His Orchestra were not available in the Fatherland proper, but that only enhanced their legend, and they picked up an underground following in Germany as well. " The key phrase is the fact that the music was forbidden to Germans but became popular with Germans. I am certain u-boat crews would have tuned in on it. Especially you should load No. 15 - Submarines. It would certainly have been popular with u-boat crews.
Of course the other songs are sickenly anti-Jew. But you can't get more Authentic than this. And let's face it, many - not all - of Germany's Jews supported Hitler right up until they were being loaded on cattle cars. In 41 Joseph Goebbels complained to Hitler that most of the German government bureaucracies were still staffed heavily with Nazi supporting Jews.
Das Boot tried to paint U-boat crews as idealistic anti-nazis. But there was no greater supporter for Hitler than Uncle Karl Donitz, who was himself made the second Feurer of the Third Reich near the War's end. Certainly when the war began most of the tunes the u-boats played would have been pro-war and pro Hitler.
Since I have been trying to finally play a career through, first time since I bought the game last summer, on my u-boat I change the music according to the year. I played Nazi stomp tunes mixed with Hitler screaming his speeches from 1938 through 40. Now in 41 I am softening the tunes. by 44 I plan on nothing but Lilli Marleen, and Brit and US radio music.
Of course this means I have to change out the music by hand once back at base.
