I use the 5200 fx with 77.72 drivers. I can alt - tab then restore and the dark gray smoke will appear but after awhile the white smoke returns. Just wondering if one of the smoke mods will take care of this. Any help would be great
thanks

As soon as you look at the sun (or where the sun is supposed to be if it is hidden by clouds) then it will switch back to white smoke. There is no current official fix.

I used to have a FX5200 card, I believe that using the SHIII resolution "fixer" may have fixed the problem.

Heres the link: http://www.communitymanuals.com/shiii/index.php?title=Display_Resolution

It didn't work for me either. :damn: To bad I really hate the white smoke. Not just for smoke on the horizon but burning ships just don't look to good with the white smoke. Back to the drawing board. :|\

:stare: nvidia :stare:

Maybe time to purchase an ATI video card. :smug:

Sorry for getting your hopes up :(

I remember solving the problem once.....

I know that by upgrading to an ATI x850 XT the problem went away :D

I really didn't get my hopes up too much. But I really appreciate your help anyway. It might have been your idea to alt-tab and restore? That was awhile ago that I found that around here. I believe the best way to fix it is ATI.

That's what I did too, replaced FX-5900 with Radeon/ATi card, no more smoke problem.

The only Geforce driver I've tried that wasn't affected by with white smoke and sun-angles, were v61.77 drivers (61.77_win2kxp_english.exe) which Soviet_Warlord mentioned to try a while back.

Camera/sun view showed black smoke from ships properly, yet sometimes after re-loading a save-game, or spotting a ship after an evening of patrolling (during daylight), smoke went white again.

I had to 'pause' the game, ALT-TAB out, then back to the game again. Black smoke then worked again. If I didn't pause the game first, nothing was fixed.

It's not perfect but better than nothing. Other Geforce drivers didn't produce constant black-smoke like the v61.77's.

If Geforce had ever fixed the black-smoke problem with FX cards, I wouldn't have had a reason to even try another brand video card. Kinda glad I did though :)

Lol its funny that you remember that I said that... I don't ... feels like ages ago

--- Yes, everyone, what Average Joe said, I believe is correct. Try it. I remember that one Nvidia driver version solved the problem, but I forgot which one. I'm gettings too used to ATI now :P

Is the damage done to ships linked to the smoke problem? I have GeForceFX5200 I'm always getting white smoke even with tab in and out...and I don't see damage with deck gun only with torpedoes..

That shouldn't be linked to the white smoke problem.

Did you try the 61.77 Nvidia drivers?

I have a 5200 FX card and If I see ships with white smoke, and then alt tab out of the game and go back into it, the ships will have black smoke.
