There is a link to it on the SimHQ SH3 board. The screenshots didn't show up for me, so you may need to check the post on this forum about the mod. BTW, it may be payware, and there's been some controversy about whether or not other modders' work was included w/o their permission.

I see you're from Canberra; I'm sure you know about the ex-RN 3 stack cruiser named after your city. :D Those ships were a really unique design; I always thought it was a shame that several of them didn't survive the war (Canberra, Dorsetshire, etc)

Thanks grey wolf, yes I know of their history, HMAS Canberra sunk along with USS Quincy, Vincennes, and Astoria, in the debacle that was the battle of Savo Island, and HMAS Australia, hit 7 times by Kamakazie's in a 2 week period !

Did you know that a US cruiser was named Canberra. It ment that the Australian Navy couldn't rename the Shorpshire when she was transfered from the Royal Navy.
The Class had a rep for being very tough ships that could operate anywhere, and despite the fact they didn't look all that modern design.
Thought you would like to know.

Exactly right, we were given Shropshire by Britian as a replacement for Canberra. And the Americans named one of their Cleveland class light cruisers in honour of our loss.

Yep. I read that the British public was really disappointed in the way these cruisers looked, since they reminded everyone of ocean liners. Still, looks aren't everything - they were tough (as bookworm mentioned). I think that despite being sunk Canberra suffered much lower casualties than the US ships at Savo Island. Same thing with the Dorsetshire and Cornwall - they both had low casualties, considering how hard they were hit.

IMO they're good subjects for a freeware mod. The superstructure isn't terribly complex, and we already have passable 8-inch twin guns that could be used.

Canberra could not have been saved, her engine rooms were badly chewed up many holes in her superstructure and a serious fire amidships, and her superstructure in ruins. So far from a safe repair port the decision to scuttle her was made, the eels came from a US destroyer. Captain Frank Getting, passed away the next morning from wounds recieved in the battle as did Captain Samual Moore of the USS USS Quincy, and Captain Howard Bode of the USS Chicargo, who's ship was only slightly damaged inexplicably headed away from the battle, nor did he use his tactical radio to inform the northern group of the situation, he commited suicide under a cloud of suspicion.
Allied casualty's 1,077 dead, 700 wounded. 4 cruisers lost.
Japenese casualty's 58 dead 70 wounded, no ships lost.
recomended reading: Lost Ships of Guadalcanal by Robert D. Ballard

That book was where I first heard of the "Canberra". :D I could spend a good half hour looking at the wreck paintings alone.
About 10 years later I read a good book by Australian authors that went into much more detail about the battle. It also refuted a claim that the RAAF was responsible for Savo since it had (supposedly) withheld recon info. I can't quite remember the title - "Disaster in the Pacific", or something like that.

USS Chicargo didn't make the best of impressions on Australian, fighting (or is that running), or visting a friendly city.
She way in Sydney Habour when three miget Japanese subs attacked. One got a trop off at her but missed, hitting a ferry used for accommadation instead. Her crew sighted a periscope and opened fire with her secondary armament. Two shells hit Fort Denison (an island fort in the middle of the harbour) and couple of others made land but didn't kill anyone. She steamed out the next day bound for Savo Island.
Her namesake visting over 20 years later gave a watercolour of the former vessal as an apology.
Better late than never!!

She was one tough old lady. Pity the Australian government didn't turn her into a museum.

One of her guns is on show at the AWM, very large for 8", I'd love to see a 16" gun.

Sergbuto hasn't released it yet. On the new ships thread someone posted one of the HMS Nelson's steam launches as an independent unit, so it would be very easy to do the same thing for a lifeboat. However, the trick is getting it to spawn at the scene of a sinking - nearly impossible, as far as I know.
