JScones put out a call for anything SH3Cmdr related, and this is what I have to contribute. Its my own list of German first and last names.

You can download the current version and use it if you like, but what I really need is for a person of German decent to check up on my work (I am not German). Make sure all of the names are not out of place, and that they are all historically correct. However, I assume that most of them are correct.

EDIT: I have alphabetized the last names...

I hope someone can help me. Thanks!

Hehe. May wanna hold five on this. I contacted the maintainer of the crew lists over at http://www.ubootwaffe.net/ seeking permission to use their database. They've given it, and I have just downloaded all 42,002 names. This means a potential for 1,764,168,004 random names. Would that be sufficient?

Actually, after taking out incomplete names, the possible combinations goes down to 1,708,221,340. :(

Also, due to the SH3 imposed limit in name lengths, some names will never appear (ie "von Wilamowitz-Moellendorf"), but I've kept them in anyway for completeness.

One question for anyone... where a surname includes Graf, should it be "Graf von Whatever" or "von Whatever Graf" or "Whatever Graf von" or "Whatever von Graf"?

"<Firstname> Graf von Whatever", "<Firstname> Freiherr von Whatever", "<Firstname> Baron von Whatever"... All that are noble titles.

"Graf", and "von Graf" are "normal" surnames, for example "Adolf Graf" and "Karl von Graf".

Thanks. I've actually now (hopefully) removed all titles. They're not needed and just take up space. No disrespect to the actual title holders though! Graf and von Graf remain (there aren't many von Graf's at all actually).

OK, one more question. Double s... some entries use ss, others ß, for example, Dreßler and Dressler. I know both are right, but how would a German actually write it (and if it makes a difference, in WWII)? If ß, does that mean that every entry with an ss should be replaced with a ß?

Likewise does oe = ö, etc?

The ulterior motive here is the extra character space that would be freed.

BTW "auf der Mauer" seems a strange surname?

You should only change ae (ä), oe (ö), ue (ü), but not ss to ß, it looks stupid and wouldn´t be done IRL. Normally you wouldn´t change the names at all, "Draeger" and "Dräger" for example are two different surnames.

BTW "auf der Mauer" seems a strange surname?

Strange, but valid. It´s a very rare surname.

That's what I'd like to know...

...Seriously, I'm just waiting to finalise a few small details with Beery, so hopefully sometime this week or weekend.

While we are waiting, I'd like to take this moment to thank Jaeson for all of his hard work.

Without it, we'd just be playing regular ol' SH3... O_o

I get goosebumps just thinking about it..... :rotfl:

Playing SH3??? What a boring perspective....games are made for modding, tinkering and tweaking, but playing them? Eeek :88)

My thoughts exactly. I've been doing the same thing for American names even before SHIV was announced. I'm still working on the 'B's and I already have over 3000 last names.

[Edit]-Oh, I forgot to mention: that uboat.net collection sounds cool to me! Now we just need someone to go over a map of Germany and add 5,000 possible birth places. :rotfl:

I'll go back through the source data - I know there's at least 150 or so birth places included.
