Hey all, I just got SH3 for Christmas and let me say I love the game. And the mods you guys have made are exceptional and really adds alot more fun into it.
Heres my problem.. I guess I downloaded a mod here that makes all of my ship icons grey like pencil. IE.. when I see a ship on the map it is not color coded for red .. enemy, green .. neurtral, and blue.. friendly. They are all basic grey. Which really really really adds to the realism but those sub guys must have better eyes than me because I cant tell what flag is waving till im right up on them. Sooooo if anyone could tell me how to fix it so my icons show up the original colors again I would sure appreciate it.
Sincerely, almost blind in Iowa .. LOL.. not really, but there again the ol' eyes have seen many younger days hehe.
Thats a problem I have...You cannot recognize the flag on the units as they are so small...Not until you are well inside the limit of your torpedoes can you see the actual nationality of the unit. This is especially hard when many have the same looking flags(Ie..many use red flags and you cant distinguish one from the other until you are to close to shoot). Then you cant shoot until you back off and get back into range so the torps will arm.
There has to be a way to either increase the flag size..or increase the zoom of the UZO or Binoculars or even the Observation Scope to make it easier to see those blasted tiny flags.

You can change the max zoom of the periscopes and uzo from 6x to 10x magnification. Use TT's mini tweeker tool and alter cameras.dat.
What would I change...I looked at the tweak tool and am confused as to what i am supposed to change.
I guess I am looking for the Binocular/UZO Optical settings..
I see this in the files
Min Zoom = 1
Max Zoom = 10
Then a bunck of stuff on the right hand side. What do I need to change to get a better zoom on the Binoculars/Obs scope.

For UZO, change "unknown_value_1" to 10
Then leave "unknown_value_2" alone.
For Obs Periscope, leave "unknown_value_1" at 1
Then change "unknown_value_2" to 10
For (Atk) Periscope, leave "unknown_value_1" at 1.5
Then change "unknown_value_2" to 10
For the Binocular, change "unknown_value_1" to 10
Then leave "unknown_value_2" alone.
Those are my settings. You can choose your own settings.
Ok..I am a bit retarded when it comes to this kind of stuff. This is my first time messing with the files this way..so you'll need to pardon my stupidity.
I changed the settings..now how do I get those into the game?
Usually I knock myself out by banging my head into a wall when doing this :damn: :damn: :damn:

Where would a noob find this tool?
NM...I figured it out.
It automatically puts the settings into the games Dat file and makes a backup.
The settings were not working at first until I removed the backup file. Then the settings were working..Thanks.
You can get the Tweak Tool here..

Thanks everyone. I guess not having the ships color coded on the map is alot more realistic and if I have a better zoom I can identify the flags better. I hope this works :)
After changing the zoom level of the binoculars and the observation scope it has made a great difference in my ability to identify the national colors of the ship while still remaining outside minimum torpedo range.
I don't understand where the back-up file is located at,plz help.Thx
The backup file is located in
C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII\data\Library
and the backup file is called copy of cameras.dat.

Actually it's dependant on where you installed the SH3 program. In my case it's K:\Windows\Silent HunterIII\data\Library

I been wondering how to do that myself 10x, good info.
Hi!
Is there a problem with Timetraveller's site? Every time I try to get into it I end up with a "The page cannot be displayed" message.
I'd really like this Tweaktool utility - anyone know if it's available anywhere else? I'd appreciate any help.
Cheers

Mini-tweaker tool only seems to be able to open .txt files.
I'll have to search for another .dat file editor i guess.
Any explanation why mini-tweaker-tool was advised for editing .dat files would be appreciated. Maybe i'm not adjusting that program correctly to edit non text files.
Also, ...i too would like to learn how to edit back into the RUB 1.45 mod some more usable ship icon in the map room. All i see are square with no tails. I'd like to see the tails to see what direction ships are going in at a quick glance. At pariscope depth with the two scopes up would be fairest i suppose. Since another crew member could theoretically be feeding info on the ship directions. I understand the concept of "God-mod" with this feature. Seeing too much data could be considered unreal. But i think it's ok when actual crew can make actual observations using the scopes or binocs...
Anyhow not a critical issue. More a fine tune than anything.

I figured it out. You have to download the extra tweakfiles and those are all text files. You open up the "camera.txt" file from the tweakfiles folder and edit it, which transfers that change into the actual camera.dat file in the game. I see my file date changed so i did edit camera dat. But maximium scope magnification still reads "6x". Probably still changed to 10x though. Just not a part of the actual graphics of the scope info overlay. Still could use more power though. Something like 20x typical of most spotting scopes we use when hunting big game.

I just changed my magnification level for the obs scope and periscope to 10x magnification. I have saved the new values.
But when i load up in the game, the magnification is still the same.
Whats wrong?

I too got sick of the crappy optics. You will like this. :D Thanks to Marhkimov for explaining how to do it.
I used the TT tweaker. I played it in game and works great! It is goofy when editing with it. I edited the txt file then rename to dat file and replaced the original and it seems to work fine.
ACHTUNG! Make sure you completely remove the original cameras.dat file out of the folder.
If you just rename it, the game engine for some reason will still read the original one!
I set the Binoculars for 20x zoom and it works.

Place this file in your Data/library folder.
It gives you better camera zoom when using various optics. Created with TT Minitweaker.
This is the default camera.dat file. With correct text in game.
Device: Min default new Max
UZO 1, 7 --> 10x
OBS 1, 4 --> 6x
ATT 1.5, 6 -->10x
BIN 7 --> 20x ! Yep for real. Now you can see the darn flags on the ships using binoculars.
Really, German optics were better than the game gives credit. In real life, you can see better.

that file doesn't seem to want to work. lol
anyway, i can't see why this friggin thing aint working even after changing the values with the mini tweaker.
Is there another way to change the values?
Edit: It definatly is the cameras_dat file that i want to be changing yeah? And once the change has been made to a tweak file, do i need to actually copy this tweak file to somewhere within the SH3 directory in order for it to work?

 Here is the correct one -sorry.
http://rapidshare.de/files/18038296/CameraZoom.rar.html
It did not work since I only placed the tweak file in it. The main regular file gets changes also. It works on my computer.
I placed the correct main Cameras.dat file in this one. So please re-download it.
do i need to actually copy this tweak file to somewhere within the SH3 directory in order for it to work?
Yes, that is one of the main problems, sort of (read below). It is related.
IMPORTANT! Make sure to completely remove the old Cameras.dat file from the directory and not just rename it; the game engine will keep reading the old original file. Put the original backup somewhere else and not in the library folder.
As I say, it is working for me. Just replace the cameras.dat file in the folder with this new one and it should work. This one should work for you. Again, make sure to remove the old Cameras.dat completely out of the library file (and rename it like Original_Cameras.BCK) or the game will use it!

Is the file meant to be copied into the Silent Hunter 3/data/library folder?
cause i've looked in this library folder, and there doesn't appear to be a camera's file. lol :(

Yes. Just place it in the Data/Library folder.
There is a cameras.dat file already there. Look very carefully. :yep:
