Hey guys, I use SHIII Commander as well as many other great mods from this community. Just curious about the wave height though. Which setting is most realistic? I have the most fun in these sims when it is as real as possible.
Let me know fellas!
I'm not sure if any of them are unrealistic. There are huge storms in Atlantic, especially during winter. Thats why I use bigger waves through December - March.

I think the wave heights for the stock game wind speeds are about right. I did some rudimentary measuring and they seemed close to me.
However, in game wind speed only maxxes out at 15 m/sec, which translates to 33.5 mph. We all know that the Atlantic can do better than that, especially in winter. 2X waves should approximate nearly hurricane force winds at a reported 15 m/sec wind speed. Remember, the game only reports 0-15 m/sec on the wind speed. The 1.5X should give you a happy medium between the two. 1.5 m/sec X 1.5 = 22.5 m/sec which should approximate 50 mph winds and appropriate wave height. Just remember that when the WO tells you the speed is 15 m/sec, the winds and seas are actually for a 22.5 m/sec wind instead.

Yes, true about the wind. But since we can't make stronger winds, I usually ignore it and use only the waves for measuring weather and seastate and to get really nasty storms during wintertime.

Do you guys change it depending on what season you are in or did you just pick a happy medium and stick with it?
I use bigger waves through December - March.-->x 1.25 and 1.5, oherwise I use 1x waves. It's a cheap way to have Atlantic winter storms :yep:
x2.0 Is too much for my stomach :rotfl: ...If I feel kinky, I might try even that one in January or something.

I use exclusively 2x waves, and double the wind speeds in my head and in my personal patrol logs.

Realistic or not, the 2x make me pretty much unable to attack during heavy storms. In the standard waves, I could still attack whenever I wanted pretty much.
I would think that this at least makes it much more realistic. I either have to trail the ship and wait for the storm to die down or just let him go.
What do you guys think about that? It seems to help keep my tonnage numbers lower which is great in my book. Still a bit too high though.

Just finished a patrol with 2X waves. They are mean! Only got 2 ships and one was damaged and on fire when I found it somehow. This is compared to the usual 8 or so ships. I found the biggest convoy I have ever seen and fired 4 torps at various ships. It was during a storm and not one single torp made it. I will never again attack during such bad weather when it's on 2X. Like I said before, at the normal rate, it did not matter how bad the weather was.
I like it.

I like it.
Me too. Sometimes I dive while on patrol in bad weather, not because it's what they really did, but because it starts to make ME seasick! Also, even though I have the storm settings higher so I can use the flak guns in bad weather, I seldom use the deck gun because I can SEE the waves washing over it, and don't want to risk my crew.
X2 forever!

Actually Steve I believe they did dive if storm was bad plus gave crew a break from the pounding. I agree with you that 2x is way to go

I've read that sometimes the relief crews would come up the hatch to find that everyone from the earlier watch had been swept overboard hours ago. Not surprising, considering how low a U-Boat would sit in the water. That reminds me - another thing for future subsims to model...

The dev team forget put a random "men to the water" feature with rough seas in the deck gun :yep:
They stay tied to the sub in all situations, including deck awash in heavy waters
more wind, more losses :arrgh!:
The crew must have some good tape ;)
I've come up on deck many a time to see the water surface 2m above us and the crew firmly standing in their places :)

I believe that in real life they put on a leather belt with a hook that they latched on to the conning tower to help keep from being washed overboard.wouldnt help much though if a big wave hit. on the wave question, I knew a guy that was on a aircraft carrier in the 50s, and he said they ran into a storm in the north atlantic that the waves where coming over the flight deck, which is about 50 feet above the water and was freezing and starting to make alot of weight on the bow. and that you could see half of the escorting destroyers keel when they would go up and down these waves and that nobody could eat because everyone was seasick and sliding everywhere from all the puke. needless to say they turned around and headed south

As far as I know that only happened once. I went to uboat.net but couldn't find the article in the short time I have left online today. Maybe someone else can look it up.
