This is something what I made for myself, but I thought sharing this with you. Well, at least with Finnish members...

15.11. Update to version 1.3, now works with NYGM and GW mods!

And this it should look like:

Only one problem, it doesnt work for me. I think the SH3Commander overwrites the en_menu.txt. :damn:

No it doesn't... Make sure you rollback before you install.

Hmm, and I made this from original file, so if any mods make changes to en_menu.txt, this "mod" will change it back to original, only the language is Finnish.

SHCommander keeps changing the flotilla descriptions, ranks and medals and the "Loaded via sh commander line rolling down the menu screen. When starting the game without commander, no changes happen to translations.

PS: @ saukko, I did some editing in your en_menu ( it's only for my personal use). Changed some terms to more authentic and grammatical changes. I also translated the whole file. Thank you from the original idea  It actually works surprisingly well, the finnish translation with german voices I mean. Heh, we are used to subtitles anyway

Yep. If you use language translations of the en_menu files, you should also translate the equivalent SH3Cmdr files, as SH3Cmdr adds new and extra text to SH3. Just translate the following files...

-Menu static.txt (en_menu.txt block)
-Menu variable_en.txt (you could get away with just changing 902 to 904 and up to "||---- News" in each 46 line)
-Ship displacements.cfg (en_text labels if the language pack alters any ship log files - optional)
-SH3Cmdr_en.txt (if you want your SH3Cmdr Personnel Files, Crew Lists and date format in Finnish too - optional)

SH3Cmdr will then pick up your translated text. This ability is mentioned in the SH3Cmdr Help.html file. Further instructions ar ementioned in the header of each file.

*NB, replace "en" with "de" or "fr" if you have translated de_menu.txt or fr_menu.txt respectively.

Thanks JScones!

@Saukko, about sharing my version, I'm not 100% happy with it yet.I need to fix those parts JScones mentioned then play the game with it for test purposes first and read the whole damn file through like a hundred times to be happy with it (and that the terminology is right etc...). Then perhaps I could use other opinions. I'm so shy too

Umm...ok, here we go. Hope it works :-?

Notes:
- The credits from original idea goes to Saukko :D
-The translation ain't perfect, nor the terminology (example, german word "Sehrohr"). It would be correct to use finnish word "näköputki", like finnish submarine veteran used in a documentary couple of weeks ago. But it sounds quite harsh, so the more familiar "periskooppi" is used. The goal was to make game actions more fluid than strickt translations. This is only my view and feel free to change it the way you wan't. It's impossible to make everyone happy
:)

-Im working on SH commander "news" section and it should be ready in couple of days. I also need to check other files too.

Edit: Ok its working now.

"Final" ( ) or latest version of Finnish translation of en_menu file.

Here: deleted, see the next page

Includes lots of fixes to terminology and grammar.

Yes, the user group is really marginal but what a heck....

Saukko
12-29-05, 02:55 AM
Well, it better than my version, especially I left some untranslated...

Half dozen people have downloaded my versio, so yeah marginal but we should post your links to some Finnish game boards to get more "audience".

Krupp
12-29-05, 07:01 AM
Heh, I'm not after "audience" at all, this was originally ment for "my-eyes-only" And I got the inspiration from your work. I'm not familiar with any Finnish game boards but feel free to post this link if you want.

I should be able to finish today the sh commander news (menu_variable)section, so you can have monthly news in finnish, and sh commander won't change back some sections and lines in the already translated en_menu file.Translation of the personal file is almost ready too (excluding "after career" notes for now).

Couple questions tho:
Where are ship types located (the ones you see on notepad and logbook)?

I would like to translate also the sh commander main page, rank, status, current date etc...but I can't find the right files.

There is zillion files to go through :shifty:

I assume you've done "Menu static.txt" too?

Couple questions tho:

You mean "C:\...\SilentHunterIII\data\Sea\EnglishNames.cfg"? Or the *_en.log files located in each ship sub folder?

I would like to translate also the sh commander main page, rank, status, current date etc...but I can't find the right files.
The interface can't be translated. Only the output.

Krupp
12-29-05, 08:21 AM
Yes, I have translated the menu static already, and the menu variable is almost done.

About the ship classes: Now that I look at the EnglishNames.cfg, top of the list are warship classes and at the end of the file there are those merhant classes and I reckon I should change those, thanks for pointing it out.

About *_en.log files, do you mean like data\Sea\NTR_en text document? There seem to be the ship data for the museum, but there is not any in-game-visible ship classes to be changed. So I quess that translating the EnglishNames.cfg file should do the job so you can have targeted ships class visible in finnish?. (In periscope and uzo notepad + logbook).

The interface can't be translated. Only the output.

Ok, good to know and it's only a minor detail.

Thanks for the help :D

Correct. Only if you want the museum text in Finnish would you consider changing the *_en.log files. Otherwise, no need to.

This download includes:

en_menu ---> SilentHunterIII\data\Menu
EnglishNames.cfg ---> SilentHunterIII\data\Sea
SH3Cmdr_en.txt ---> SH3 Commander
Menu variable.txt + Menu static.txt ---> SH3 Commander\Cfg

With these you have the most important parts of the sh3 translated to finnish language and you can use the excellent SH3 commander program too. Your personal and crew files are also mostly translated and the already translated files from en_menu file won't turn back to english when you start the game via SH3 Commander.

You can also have the monthly news in finnish (when loading a new patrol or saved mission). Merchant and warship classes have been translated too as you can see in your targeting notepad or logbook.

Most likely there are some errors in translation and spelling etc.It is so easy to become blind to your own "work". I did short testing with naval academy and normal career and so far all seemed to work fine. Ideas, changes and constructive feedback is welcomed too.l

Like always, remember to backup your original files....että silleen....

A little update:

Besides en_menu.txt, now also English.cfg (shiptype names that appear in UZO and periscope) and messages_en.txt (stock SH3 radiomessages) are translated.

Also...

Added "Finland" folder and its sub-folders, and defined Finlands alliances during the war (neutral until 21.6.1941, Axis 22.6.1941 - 14.9.1944, and Allies after that).
Added Type IIA submarine to Finnish side as Vesikko.
Added several cargo ships and Clemson-class destroyer to "Russia" folder.
Added a single test mission for Vesikko (remember Gulf of Finland is rather shallow).

Note that these requires NationalityMod by Sergbuto, available at http://u-boot.realsimulation.com/

Excellent stuff. Would you happen to know where could I find some drawings for finnish ships from that era to model them to the game?

Here is some pictures:
http://users.tkk.fi/~jaromaa/Navygallery/index.htm

I think that you can model the gunboats Karjala, Turunmaa, Uusimaa and Hämeenmaa just using the tugboat and adding guns (I don't know how to do this).
2 x 4 inch guns and 3 AA MGs for Uusimaa and Hämeenmaa
2 x 3 inch guns and 3 AA MGs for Karjala and Turunmaa

Armoured ships Ilmarinen and Väinämöinen are entirely different matter... 10 inch guns in some destroyer hull? ;) Their displacement was only 3,900 tons but carried 4 x 254 mm guns and 8 x 105 mm guns, plus AA armament.

Okay I got some plans of Ilmarinen. The model and textures are quite ready, next thing to know is how to get it to SH3. Heres the model in other simulation called virtual sailor with imperial battleship:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v256/Waterbool/ilmarinen.jpg

The gun casings are quite similar sized in both ships which is quite funny. So much firepower in so small ship.

Stock game:

English.cfg
messages_en.txt

NYGM Tonnage mod:
NYGM_en_menu.txt, rename it to en_menu.txt
English.cfg

The Grey Wolves:
GW_en_menu.txt, rename it to en_menu.txt
English.cfg

Note that messages_en.txt is for stock game radio messages only. And backup the original files.

Comments and criticism is always welcome, especially if I messed up something.

A gun mount is a gun mount. Look what happened when the British put the same 15"/42 twin mount into a monitor that went into Hood and the Queen Elizabeth and Revenge classes:

S!

Yes, so far it seems to work ok with NYGM 2.2. I had to edit the old en_menu file to make it fit. There was some changes, so some testing and tweaking is still going on in my current career :arrgh!: to find out any (bad) mistakes (first patrol with the translation in NYGM2.2)

Sh3 commander 2.6.1.161 works too.

Generally there are some details that I haven't done or they can't be changed or I haven't noticed them. But the game feels fairly good. (I'm still figuring out if I should remove that "range to target"-feature, which NYGM2.2 removed).

About GW then, I have no idea... never used it.

I tried to install translated files in middle of my 13th patrol and savegames were corrupted. But, I took my last "before patrol" save and all went well.
