I`d like to try it! Looks great!
Btw, this should be in the mod workshop section. :)
Mods will most likely move this there, when they notice. So dont worry.

It's nice, but it sure looks like it will be HELL on the FPS... How is that, anyways? FPS?

hi Dowly
glad you like it:) unfortunately i don´t have any webspace, but i could send you the files via e-mail if you like.
@Marhkimov
on my geforce FX 5900 i didnt notice a significant hit on the framerate. But i didn´t test it with large convoys. I made 3 versions, a low-, medium- and a highres version. 128x128, 256x256 and 512x512. For the screenshots i used the hires version.

www.rapidshare.de You can upload it there. Although, it might not work for every user, but that´s the only place I know. :)

We recently had an oil tanker truck turn over and burn next to the San Diego Stadium...it had perhaps 4000 gallons of deisel oil in it and was allowed to burn off, which took perhaps half a day.
What impressed me was the vast amount of thick black smoke that rose a thousand feet up and trailed off as a widening band to the north for miles. Really, it made me think that SH3 doesn't come close to what an oil tanker fire would have produced in terms of lasting smoke.
Any way to make the smoke rise up high?

I uploaded it to www.rapidshare.de.
You can download it here: http://rapidshare.de/files/9505302/BoomSmokeMod1.1.rar.html
I played around with it a bit more and the hires version does indeed need alot of graphics card power. I tryed it on a large convoy and my old GeForce really had to struggle to keep up, so use at your own risk;).
If you want to modify it to make it look better or run smoother please feel free to do so;).
i hope you enjoy it,

Looks great, I´ll try the hi-res version! :rock:
Topic moved to "Mods Workshop".
It´s pretty much useless to me, as I play with particle density set to 35-40, so it looks stupid. Pity. :(

I saw that tanker fire too, the smoke could be seen for miles. I could see it from downtown San Diego. :yep:

I am not entirely happy with it yet, but it starts to look like thick oily smoke.
The one viewed through periscope is quite impressive looking smoke pillar. Should it look more darker or "black" if it's burning oil (and other synthetic stuffs)? (We had a huge fire in used car tyre warehouse couple of years a go and that smoke was BLACK and big one). :o

I was also messing around with TT's tool, and found that really tall smoke columns begin to disply graphical anomalies, such as flickering and temporarily disappearing. Is that happening with you?
So in my smoke mod, I decided to make a much smaller column. Btw, I have an ATI Radeon 9800pro.

I never thought I'd be missing something from SHII, but there was an explosion and smoke mod that left smoke hanging in the sky for hours after a ship sank. Something like that would be nice for SHIII.
Oh, and the mod looks cool, but might be a bit much for my system.

I tried that. It doesn't work as well as one might think.
For one, it really lags up the system, since SH3 isn't able to stop particle generation. If we were to leave the particles to just sit on the water surface, it would keep generating until we CTD.
And two, if we sink too many ships in a convoy, the leftover smoke would be overkill on the FPS. I'm sure residual smoke would look nice, but unnecessary if you factor in the loss of FPS.

Oh, I was already sure it couldn't be done, or someone would have done it. I was just thinking how nice it would be.

@Krupp
Yes, i agree. Oilfires are much darker. But the darker i make it, the more detail it loses, and i no longer get this puffy cloudlike look.
@Marhkimov
Yes, if i make the smoke any taller then this it starts to flicker. So this is about as high as i can go on my system.
And i have another problem. Whenever i look in the direction of the sun, all smoke in the game turns white.(even at night). Alt-Tabbing out of the game fixes it temporarily, but as soon as i look into the sun, it turns white again. Very annoying. Does anyone have similar problems and/or knows how to fix it?
Oh and is there a way to refresh the particle system while the game is running? Right now every time i change a value i have to restart the game to see the effect. Thats a big pain, cause SH3 takes ages to load on my computer;)

12-21-05, 02:38 PM
It might help you to know that running a mission from the naval academy loads a lot faster.
But other than that, you still have to quit the entire SH3 in order to make changes. Yeah, it sucks, but at least it sucks for everyone. ;)
boomshekah, the white smoke is common with all NVidia cards. As far as I know there is no fix for it other than Alt-Tab out and back in.

Oh ok, thanks HW3. Maybe a future driver release will fix it.

I believe that the 66.77 (or was it 61.77?) drivers fix the white smoke issue (Sorry if I didn't get the driver name, I bought a new ATI x850xt video card a while back, and forgot about this nasty nvidia problem :P )

Not to highjack this thread but I have never used any other card (well since VooDoo went bust) than Nvidia and I never had a problem with "white smoke." or had to Alt-Tab out to correct. Did I miss something?

The white smoke issue is only in Nvidia FX 5200 cards (I think)

I dont intend to sound mean but i dont like it - its far too much smoke. I am an ex firefighter and it just dont look realistic. Too uniform in colour.
To me it just dont look right. Am i the only one who sees it that way?
Good work anyway. However i do reckon the GW mod needs more smoke - just not THAT much. And oil fires - which is primarily what would be burning on a ship is jet black in colour.
Please dont take this the wrong way mate. :-? I do appreciate the time it takes for these things.

No, you're not. I removed it after one patrol because I also thought it was too much, especially as it adds smoke to the parked ships in the harbors. I'm using a smoke mod I found a long time ago, which increases the smoke but not by too much.
Just my opinion. I agree, the more mods the better for all concerned.
