View Full Version : DDs Texture size: wich way to go?

atm i have about 3 dozen Textures for G, GB, and US DDs.
all are 1024 square, and i would like to know, before i upload them; if that is okay for the people that use them.
Stock textures are only 512 Pixels square, so the FILESIZE, and MEMORY needed, will be FOUR times HIGHER.
Loading times are bound to go up; as will be stutters as the DDs are loaded when wou approach.
However, the Details like Lifesaving Ring, Round windows and doors will be a lot better.
so... a call for some serious feedback.
I dont want to upload Dozens and dozens megs worth of DD textures, if i can supply the same amout of textures for a quart of this, and people dont look at the DDs anyway... :o

why not stick w/ 512? what's the advatage of 1024 -- since you'll only be looking at them from a distance thru scope most of the time.

Go 512 because no one will notice the detail of ships anyways. I mean, unless someone really decides to put it under a microscope, nobody will see anything. Rgr about the persiscope. We sink ships, not admire them... So we might as well save some harddrive space.
Myself, I use 512 for the soldati.
And it's coming along slowly, but I'll post one or two more screens shortly. I have a really crazy camo scheme that I've been working on. It's been a bi*tch trying to line up all of the stripes, but it was worth it... I think it looks sick... ;)

And your esitmation about 5 times the power is a little bit bold. It's not that much different when you have just 1 destroyer. If you have 20 of them - yes, you'll see the differences in FPS, but one or two - IMO it's not worth the sacrifice.

It depends, merchants should have smaller skins, for convoys.
For smaller DDs and DEs, I guess its ok for 1024.
But for the soldati, i've seen convoys with up to 18 of them, so I dunno. Anyways, my soldati template is already set for 512. Too late to change it. Resize will just make it lose resolution.

The way I see it: Whoever creates the skin can do whatever they want. If they themselves prefer 512, then by all means make it 512. If they prefer 1024, then by all means make it 1024.
Now realize that regardless of texture size, people will still download the files in order to use the skins. And in general, people don't care about skin sizes as long as they are beautiful and usable.
Most everyone is not even familiar with photoshop, let alone texture editing. They won't even know the difference.

well the thing i do... i dont call that "art of xyz" "photoshopping" or "texture editing"...
what i do is jhûst plain and simple.
Waste time to put Paint on the goddamn bugger till i like the way it looks. :D :D

Ok, my SUPER-DEE-DUPER-SECRET is...

copy and paste from another skin... Preferably a blank one that already has the metal texturing on it. Then you can edit it as you see fit (blur, sharpen, brighten, darken, color, saturation, etc.) and no one will ever know the difference. Then apply camouflage to your liking.
