BIG thanks to TimeTraveller for providing me with the modding tools that never allow me to sleep. THANK YOU! :D
So with that being said...
Here are my newest environment colors. I've made extensive tests and changes, over months and months of time... I made sure that the sky and the sea mix together seamlessly at the horizon, that the underwater colors are just right, and that the colors reflect perfectly off of the u-boat and the surroundings. And many more color tweeks that I can't even remember!
NOTE: I have not changed underwater visibility.
Atlantic water is bleak and PALE BLUE. It matches well with the skies, which I have made a little brighter, but I have still retained the overall "greyish" look of the Atlantic.
http://img40.imageshack.us/img40/1637/15cj.jpg
Arctic water is BLUE BLUE BLUE. It looks like it is freeezing cold. The skies glow brightly during the day and have a neon purple glaze during sunset/sunrise. It gives it a "fresh air" effect.
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a172/hockeemaster/Ocean%20Mod/b9bdfb3a.jpg
Med water is TURQUOISE to GREEN. It looks a lot like tropical water, similar to Hawaii, the Caribbean, and well, the Mediterranean of course! A native of the La Spezia area has told me that the colors are spot-on perfect.

http://img200.imageshack.us/img200/9039/39lm1.jpg
And due to my experience with light-night mod, I can make it so that the nights are a tiny bit brighter. So that you can finally SEE!!!

Could someone post these IUB files for me? I need to make them work with my colors, but I don't want to download the entire 200mb just for these files...
SkyColors_Arct.dat

SkyColors_Med.dat
P.S. just make 100% sure that they are from IUB.

Is IUB 16km or 8km?
I won't need someone to post the IUB Env files, as long as I know which settings IUB uses...

excellent colors
is it possible to map the lightness of the night depending on whether it's overcast or not? I was thinking that if it's overcast AND night, you would actually get zero visibility. Complete darkness.
But with the moon and starlight, you could get a little.
I would tone down the lighter nightlight.. and if possible make it so that the overcast nightlight is almost completely dark.
Marhkimov
12-11-05, 05:32 PM
Oh s*h*i*t (excuse me)... Now that you mention it, I think that is possible. I can do it, but that would take some more time.. Hmm... :hmm:
That is an awesome idea, I totally overlooked it...
But I'm not sure... It could be somewhat possible; I'd have to test it and make a few (or many) tweeks...
Marhkimov
12-11-05, 05:48 PM
Ok, on second thought, it can't be done as I initially thought it could.
The lighting of the night sky is determined by a single color palette, and SH3 uses that single palette for every nighttime condition, regardless of clear, cloudy, or stormy skies.
Which is really unfortunate, because there are many different color palettes for daytime lighting. And that allows for many combinations of lighting. There is lighting for when it is clear, for when it is cloudy, for when it is cloudy but the sun is visible, for when it is cloudy and the sun is hidden, for when it is dusk or dawn, for when it is twilight between dusk, dawn, and nighttime, and when it is stormy in overcast.
The devs went through that much trouble to model the daytime in SH3, but they only left one condition for night... black... :shifty:
They really should have hired the Microsoft Flight Sim weather team... Those guys know how to cook up a storm. :D

I'll take one in stock SH3 format!
Marhkimov
12-11-05, 06:17 PM
ok, stock will work with 8km/RUb/stock Env settings. They all use the same files.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but IUB uses 16km, so it will work with 16km/IUB Env settings.
I'm even going to update the SH3Cmdr_Med_Seawater_Fix in this newest mod "thing"... whatever you want to call it... ;)

12-11-05, 07:44 PM
I didn't think it was possible, but I made further improvements to the LIGHT NIGHT sky. :D
Now, you can have LIGHT NIGHTS THAT FADE! Blue on the horizon, and it gets darker as you look up (concept borrowed from Rubini). These shots are from the 8km/RUb/stock mod, so there you can see the dark horizon line. 16km/IUB will not have a horizon line.
http://img515.imageshack.us/img515/7756/29ju.jpg
http://img515.imageshack.us/img515/9190/12uz.jpg
That darker horizon thing is just beautiful... beautifuuuuul *drool*
Marhkimov
12-11-05, 08:12 PM
I used to dislike horizon line because sometimes it was looked too dark compared to the color of the sky... But that was before I found out that I could change its color. So I fixed 'em by making the gradation more gradual, and now it's as good as ever!
I love the horizon line.
But with or without it, I still think the sky looks damn fine... :)

Could I get your settings for RUB 1.45 and IuB 1.02 with the 8km mod?
Still better, could you and JScones get toether and include it in the new SH3CMDR? I know he is planning to include the Med water. Perhaps he could include the sky also. I haven't been able to get the water and night sky to work; it would be great the have these options in the CMDR

Could I get your settings for RUB 1.45 and IuB 1.02 with the 8km mod?
Yes, you can use 8km settings with RUb1.45. After all, RUb works on the 8km scale.
But no, you cannot use 8km settings with IUB. IUB uses files which are on the 16km scale, and I would have to make many changes in order to convert IUB to the 8km scale.

There are areas where those blue waters exist in the med. Look around the Greek Isles, for example.
But on the average, especially in deep mid-med waters, where chances are most SH3 players wind up in Flotilla 29 missions, this doesn't appear to be so.

Thank You very much.
I thought about this problem, describe by Marhkimov:
"However, I must stress that it is a VERY MINOR problem, indeed. If you begin in the Med and sail out into the Atlantic, you will still see Med seawater, and vice versa. Which is no big deal, since you should NEVER leave the Mediterranean if you are in the 29th flotilla... And similarly, you should NEVER enter the Mediterranean if you are based in the Atlantic."
So........

Not so true.
Despite a high deeps areas in Mar ionio (Matapan abiss - 5092 mteters between south Italy and Greek islands) and the middle of the Tirrenian (-3000 meters in center of Med) the mediterranean have a middle deep around 1000 meters.
Note that the most part of the U Boat action was conducted in the Sicialian channel (between Sicilia and North Africa, around the strategical base of Malta) where the max deep is around 300 meters with minimum level of 20/40 meters in front of the Egypt, Libya and Tunisia shoreline (where most of the convoy was attacked) Even the gibraltar straits have a max deep of 300 mt.
Btw. the greenish aspect of med even in the middle deep areas is due to the great amount of Posidonia a sea plant that live only in the med and grow in form of a real and very extended green.
So we can stat that the blue deep area represent a very minor aspect of the Mediterranean palette.

Yes i served as para/scuba raider (frogman) Leutnant of the GOI / COMSUBIN of the italian Navy special forces command. Actually, by last month i'm descharge with honour after 15 years of service.

Regarding the "bright" Med waters...
If anyone thinks that the water is too bright, I urge you to ride in it for a while. Try "Malta" Single Mission or a Med campaign. It will look different if you see it in motion, as opposed to my bright screenshots.
At first I was thinking the same thing: WAAAY too bright...
But after I adjusted to the feeling of blue and green-ness, everything panned out quite nicely. The Med certainly does give quite a different feeling of atmosphere than the Atlantic.
You will love it!

Well, that's a first... I didn't know you could use both...
You would most likely use the 16km version, since you probably installed 16km atmosphere mod over RUb.
EDIT:  hehehe, I forgot... I use IUB, RUb, and Atmosphere 8km.

I too use RUb 1.45 and a custom 16 km version. You just have to load a separate 16 km mod AFTER you install RUb 1.45.
Once IUB gets updated to include all the new features of RUb 1.45, I will go back to using IUB again (but still using my custom 16 km mod).

You might not notice the color change if you are playing in the Atlantic. After all, I made subtle changes, since the original colors were already pretty good. However, if you want to know what major changes I made to the Atlantic, I made the daytime sky a little brighter and the underwater a little darker. Plus the nighttime skies should be noticably lighter.

Here's the part where you have to be using SH3Cmdr in order to fix this. Are you using it? Well, if you ever decide to install SH3Cmdr, just install my Med water fix2, which was included in the download pack.

yay! For the explosion effects above water (such as torpedo blast and depth charge splash) could you make it seem more natural in a way that the water gets violently thrown upwards, but doesn't hit a wall and come straight back down (most apparent in the depth charge explosion effect). It seems as though the water hits a wall, and doesn't go high enough. I don't know, the stock version just doesn't look normal :(

I have a fresh install of SHIII, patch1.4, RUB1.45, Marhkimov's water madness for RUB and his smoke mod. Endless days of bright sunshine off the coast of Italy in December 1941.
I'll keep playing; perhaps it is oney great weather.

I was playing a few test missions and I just noticed that. The water goes up, and just stops dead in mid-air. Very weird indeed.
TT has just released some new particles rules, but it definately looks a lot more complicated than the smoke rules... Particle tweeking is very painstakingly difficult.

Yes. In this case, it doesn't matter that you are using RUb. You are essentially using the 16km atmosphere mod, so it would only be natural for you to install the 16km version.

Marhkimov -->
at the begining - BIG :sunny: thanks for your mods!!! But I have a one question: it is possible to change 16km mod to eg. 12km mod? I am asking because I have less than 25 FPS with 16km mod in the harbor or close to land areas. 16km mod v2.0 is perfect for eye but hard for 3D card (I have radeon 850X PE with 256 Mb of RAM) - it is why I am looking for any solutions;)
Marhkimov
12-18-05, 08:17 PM
Hi strelnikov,
I used to run 16km mod and also had the same problem as you. And note that my system has an ATI radeon 9800pro and 1gb ram; above average specs, if you ask me... But fps was still poor nearby land and in port. I got really tired of 20fps, so I installed 8km mod and all is well again.
So before you contemplate about 12km, I recommend switching to 8km. It's not as bad as you might think...
strelnikov
12-18-05, 10:58 PM
Hello Marhkimov!
Thanks for fast answer! Of course I have tested 8km mod - all is ok but I have a one fatal problem with opacity, fog and lighting values under water. In other words fog is to close to my u-boat - it can be OK on the deep sea but in a shallow waters I have a fatal contrast with sea bottom level and water opacity (eg. when sea is not deeper than 25-40 meters).
I have changed your 8km mod scene.dat file (in hex editor I have replaced values of offset 03DC to orginal --> 80 C0 00 00 90 41) because I was simply unhappy that new scene.dat (8 or 16 km) reduced the sightrange to almost nil, so I decided to change it back to orginal. But it doesn't work with 8 km mod, only with 16km. It is why I have asked about 12km mod or how to do it;)
Marhkimov
12-18-05, 11:06 PM
Have you tried using TT's mini tweeker tool? You can easily change the fog factors from there.
The value is called "UnderwaterFogEnd". Just change it to a value between 12 and 20 for high underwater visibility.

Sorry for problems but I have an other idea - it will be possible to mix : underwater values from 16km mod with sea /sky /sun lighting, colour, reflections and fog distance values taken from 8km mod?

Let me know.....
1]
You included the enhanced smoke into this mod ?
2]
If yes..... do you have the smoke mod separtelly ?
And did you made a manual editing guide ?
Can you made a guide ? If you dont remember all the changes, no problem, just make a list with all settings present in the mod....... i made that for the Depth Charges FX to compatibilize with other mods.
There are many persons working to mod particles file, we need to do a manual editing guide with each mod....
I am working now in to increase the tracer shells, it works very fine, i am able to fix my aiming visually...... i am thinking in to NOT make a mod, only a manual editing guide...... is more simple.
3]
If i use your ocean files, can i replace the night texture zone to maintain my clear night vision.
I fight a lot with that i dont want to lose my night vision.

Yep. I kinda threw it in as an extra bonus mod, because I wasn't sure it qualified as its own seperate mod. I want to edit more particles, first.
2]
If yes..... do you have the smoke mod separtelly ?
nope, but the ocean madness is not a very large mod... If you want, you can just download it for the smoke alone.
And did you made a manual editing guide ?

I thought about making a manual editing guide, but I figured that not many casual players would use it. There are a lot of changes that are needed to be made; it's pretty boring...
But I did write all of my settings down in a notebook. I guess I can type them out if you really want me to.

I dont agree, a manual editing guide is a need. To edit, using TT's Mini Tweaker is so easy.
If not, people will be enforced to choice between one mod or another.......
I agree to make the guide is boring, because copy and paste is not admited by TT's Mini Tweaker........but when it is done, to edit the file is so quickly and easy, no more than a few minutes and done !

Basically the sun looks like the default flat white thing that comes with the game... no glow or anything.
It's so important to have a good glowing sun !! I hope you can help, nice lighting in the mod by the way, just need me sun and I'm all set.

It could be an Nvidia problem. You might have to ask someone with Nvidia experience, because I have an ATI Radeon. I'm not sure how to fix it.

I have a NVidia card and got the "sun glow" problem but only with AA activated in my video card control pannel.
You should check this.
Anyway, you can play the game at a higher resolution in order to "fix" it (higher res mean less need of AA).
To Marhkimov & Avon Lady. Thank you very much for the alternate download links. When I get home from work I will get the mod immediately.

Those are various other mods.
In your case, you would use the file for 8km, because you are using stock settings.
I'm using the right files but why cant I see Med sea as blue? I start in La Spezia and go all throughout the Mediterranean and see nothing but the same old water. And the sea underwater is ALOT darker than normal. ANd I have no other mods, only dial mods, torp textures, etc. nothing that changes Env.

I want to use both.

I really like the Supersmoke mod because it looks very nice and is FPS friendly. Used with IUB 1.02 worked great. Now I want to use it with the new IUB 1.03 but there's a small problem because the IUB 1.03 already contains modified file particles.dat so I can't simply overwrite it with the one provided by Marhkimov.
So I'd like to ask him (or anybody else) to describe what values have to be changed in particles.dat (I'm using the TT's minitweaker) to make the Supersmoke mod working...
please...
I'm sure you could overwrite the particles.dat if you wanted to do without much problem, if the mod only overwrites the graphics. Back it up first, though.

this was the first thing I've tried but then I've recieved some minor graphical glitches...
well I don't know what original file used Marhkimov (stock SH3?) and what changes were made in the one came in IUB (I know only about some DC effects and the merged smokemod)
so I can add some IUB values to Mrhk's file or Marhk's values to IUB but simple overwriting is not solution
Geralt, IuB 1.03 use the same particules settings of Marhk's Super smokes for particules.dat.

I don't want to be unpolite (I'm just a nub) but I can't agree... I've found this:
I've got "stock" Marhk's supersmoke as a part in his Ocean Madness V2. It contains 2 small (4kB) smoke_volume*.tga files and the particles.dat file
IUB 1.03 came with one small (4kB) and one bigger (65kB) smoke_volume.tga and modified particles.dat.
Overwriting the IUB smoke*.tga files with these from OM bringes me... how to say... jumpy smoke...sorry can't descibe it... but the FPS was better than IUB
Using the tga's and particles.dat from OM gives me cool smoke but also some minor problems mainly on the ship/water edge...
well, definitely not a big issue but sometimes when tanker blows FPS drops below 30

The Particles.dat don't need to be changed because it already have the settings of Mark's Super Smokes in it. In Fact, it was the original Mark's Super Smoke to begin with. I changed later some values that was required for another mod (Depth Charge FX), without affecting the Mark's settings.
You are right on the tga files thought. I added two different textures because I felt the textures more realistic than the Mark's tga, but the size on one of them still 64x64 instead of 32x32. I did not reduced the 64x64 one because the smoke didn't look satisfying to me when reduced to 32x32. This been said, maybe the 64x64 will need to be rescaled down again and tweaked until satisfaction is meet :dead:.
Try with only the 32x32 files from the Mark's Super Smoke mod. See if it help. Feedback will be appreciated and sorry for the incoveniences.
JonZ
So I take Marhk's particles.dat add values from Redwine's DC FX mod and try different textures... :yep:
thanks JonZ for quick explanation

Actually I'm being a little facetious. I used the 16k version and have had no problems.
I stopped using the smoke mod, though; I've never seen that much smoke unless the ship was coal fired.
