from RUB readme:

"Recommended Settings

For the most realistic simulation experience, it's recommended that players leave "No Map Contact Update" UNCHECKED. In this version of the mod the map contacts are shown on the in a subdued way so that players only get a general idea of the contact - as much as the hydrophone operator would be able to give the commander."

who came up with the idea that turning off "no map contact update" should keep the game at 100%? I agree with some of the statement above (per RUB readme file), but dont agree with the last statement......how is the hydrophone operator suppose to give you exact distance to something??? how does unboxing this help out the operator...(all i see is a hydrophone line on the nav map....am I missing something?)

As of now, as soon as you spot a ship on the surface ....it appears on your "gods eye" (non) navigation map...and moves along as long as you have visual contact with it..... this also allows very quick plots to find ship course and speed.....all I have to do is mark the ship (box on screen) at one point then at a certain time gap mark it again and viola I have corse and speed....this makes the hardest thing in the game, aka judging distance to the target at any point, obsolete....and very gaming, and not realistic at all.........I dont know....it seems dirty to me to use this(and the WO for bearing and distance) ........part of that immerion factor is knowing that all of the firing solution came from your hard work...

maybe I take for granted that people use the watch officer to get their bearing and distance to the target :nope: (which I personally think is a cheat....so i dont use it) dont use him!! you are cheating yourself!

I mean, I hate to be the Realism nerd....but having that setting unboxed in the realism menu is a huge cheat to any hardcore Manual player IMHO. Getting he plot has always been the hardest part..because it takes multipule observations of the target to get a good estimate of true course and speed(it is an estimate because getting exact distance is very very very challenging and is seldom perfect). AND NOT USE THE WATCH OFFICER! :stare: can we get rid of this order somehow?

has anyone else noticed this or just me??

ps...I just started playing again since I have a little more time on my hands.......just started playing with Commander and RUB and love it so far...

any way the next verison of RUB can address this??

Wouldn't your problem go away for you if you just ignored RUB's advice and re-checked the "No Map Contact Update" box in the realism settings?

I tend to agree with you that having these map contacts turned on, even fuzzied up as RUB handles them, has taken away a lot of my enjoyment I was getting from playing with them off, so I am planning to turn them back off next time I manage to get back into the game - it's been hard to get time to spend underwater these days :(

I know lots of folks around here denigrate having to do all that work themselves, but I think that's probably because they seem to view SH3 as only a "sub-captain simulator" and they don't think it's "realistic" for the captain to have to do all that work himself. On the other hand, I tend to view SH3 as a more comprehensive "sub simulator", so when I do all that work myself I think of it as the game letting me simulate being not only the captain (at times) but also being the navigator, watch officer, damage control officer, soundman, etc.

To me, it's kinda like a flight sim that lets you jump from being the pilot to one of the gunner positions or bombardier - it's not trying to say that it's "realistic" for the pilot to actually do all those other jobs too, it's just letting you simulate more than one role/person on the plane.

I understand what Panthercules is saying.

I love realism, but I (the captain) cannot do all of the work. I can't be at every station at one time. Checking hydrophones, using TDC, at the helm, on the periscope, marking courses and firing ranges. That's why I'd rather get some data, than no data at all.

Ok, I can be everywhere at once, but it gets tedious. My motto is, "Just look and shoot... Who needs stinkin' data?!" :yep:

hahaha....I cant do that.....steals the fun out of the sim....when i was growing up and playing AOD I was a point and fire type....but doing all the little stuff makes it that much more intense for me now....keeps me coming back!

yeah, I've checked the box......wish 100% forced people to actually do all the hard stuff....that way they appreciate/respect it alot more...thats one of my big gripes. the game is actually set up rather poorly for taking your own measurements in some aspects I think....for me to take a bearing, distance, time hack, and mark my position all at the same time takes some jumping around and some pretty quick mouse clicks. having a button that automatically marks your position on the nav map/takes the current bearing you are looking at/ and reads the angle that you have the set in the statimeter would make things run a lot smoother....by not having to leave the UZI/Scope......it would be the same as yelling out "Mark!" and having your shipmates reading off the info on the out side of the scope....but that is for the next subsim i guess...
