View Full Version : Situation Vacant. New Mod-Master required for RUb.

With the regrettable disappearance from the scene of the previous incumbent (Beery) after the final release of version 2.0, there will be a need for a new Mod-Master for RUb. Beery has stated that anyone can take over RUb, provided that they give it a new name. Since it is highly desirable to keep all of RUb together, we require an agreed new Mod-Master who will coordinate further additions/corrections. Otherwise, there will arise many mutually-incompatible splinter groups. Also, we need a recognisable new name for RUb ("NewRUb"?).
Therefore we invite both applications and nominations for the post of new Mod-Master.
Job requirements:
- Good knowledge of modding (essential).
- Good knowledge of the U-boat war (essential).
- A knowledge of standard code testing procedures.
- The time to test new mods personally, after incorporation into 'NewRUb'. (essential)
- The understanding that the objective of modding is to make the game as a whole more realistic, not to render bomb blasts accurate to the nearest millimetre, nor to add yet more skins.
- The ability to spell correctly.
- The ability to provide good back-up for a period of months.
- The patience to deal with idiots who can't read simple installation instructions.
- The maturity to understand why the above requirements are important. It is unlikely that anyone aged under 25 will be suitable.
- The knowledge that all this will be unpaid! (essential)
Nominations/Applications will be rejected from anyone who:
- thinks 'wow', 'cool' or 'omigod' are useful words.
- can't spell correctly their application.
- has the attention span of an inebriated butterfly.
- demonstrates an inability to read this post.
Please submit your nominations/applications in this thread below:
PS - I don't qualify. :D

Well, 2.0 isn´t out yet and I guess there is still hope that Beery changes his mind. If not, there are 40 people in the RUb team, it would surprise me if there isn´t already an internal discussion about who will take over the project.
What does Beery himself say on this?
I mean, he has made clear that he wants to make the final version, 1.5, out for Christmas.
Otherwise - I thought about this, but I simply don't have the organizational skills to keep it up. But I'll be glad to work alongside anyone who can continue the project in the same way as Beery.
One thing I DO plan, is for the time I have during the Christmas break - to partly ressurect the Operations mod, and to try and complete a few of the things that had not been finished by us originally (such as adding new ports outside of Europe, tweaking scripted patrols and major units like the scripted surface raider operations, adding fishing boats and auxiliary patrol vessels in distant waters, and adding a few new convoy routes that did not make it into the last Improved Convoys). It has always been part of RUb, so it'd be great to have it in a more complete state as well.
Anyone who'd like to have a hand in this - please consider.
I've also worked closely with Beery on issues like damage, sonar, guns, etc. etc. for RUb 1.43 and above.
Otherwise, I never doubted that RUb will not be the end of it all. And I'll be glad to try and help out those who plan to extend it into the future, but on the condition that they will be as enterprising and dedicated to realism as Beery.

I officially apply for the post, :-j
My first actions are as follows,
1. Nuclear Rocket mods :yep:
2. Flying Subs Mods :|\
3. Great Sea monsters included mods :D
4. Blood blood and lots of blood I even want the ships to bleed.
Do I get your vote,
Before anyone starts the ban him debate, those who know me, know I have my occasional immature outbursts in which I am the only one who laughs.
:rotfl:
gouldjg would actually be my pick for assistant-manager. He's the go-to guy when you want crazy ideas that actually work (just look at his revolutionary work with damage modeling and such). He's often light-years ahead of the pack with the ideas for improving the game. The solution he comes up with aren't always the simplest ones, but they definitely lead to some great new additions once they're tweaked out and managed better in conjunction with other mods.
But I think we could use someone a bit more conservative, like Beery, to organize everything. If we let gouldjg run loose on RUb, we can rename it "Radical U-boat" :88)

Wow, good luck to the new Captain! This will be a J.O.B. and a half. And many thanks to Beery for a great job.
My picks-
AUB = Accurate U-Boat
GUB = Genuine U-Boat
TT
I kind of like AUb. You could also read that as "Advanced Uboat".
Just a quick heads-up:
RUb 2.0 will almost definitely not appear before Christmas, if ever. I'm just not feeling the motivation anymore I'm afraid. So it's up to you guys to take the game to new heights. It was a 'gute anlauf', but it's very nearly time for me to give up my boat to a new commander. If it was up to me, CCIP and Stiebler are the guys I would choose to carry on the work (CCIP has always been closest to me in terms of the vision thing, and Stiebler is doing great work at the moment), but it's really up to whoever decides to take on the job.
I'm still working on SH3 Commander with JScones, but my days are definitely numbered. I'll check back in with the community from time to time, and in a few months I'll probably pick up the game again and set out into the Atlantic for a few more patrols.
By the way, if someone in the team wants to take over the control of the SH3 Mod Team forums, give Neal a call. Currently it's being overseen (very badly) by me, but since work on Ops came to a halt I don't think it's been all that busy, so it's not been too necessary to monitor things. Anyway I'm not going to be there anymore. It might be an idea to close it down and make the team forums part of the general mod forums. I dunno. It's up to you folks.
As we say in Yorkshire:

Beery,
Thank you very much for your public clarification of your position with RUb. And best wishes for your future paths. Undoubtedly we shall all miss your regular clarification and commentary on forum matters, to say nothing of your contribution with RUb. You have always, incidentally, easily fitted the "job description" given at the head of this thread.
Many thanks also for your public endorsement of CCIP and me, but I've already ruled myself out.

The suggestions for new names for RUb in this thread have been very ingenious, but I don't think any (excepting Avon Lady's joking SCRUb) indicate that the new mod will be a *continuation* of Beery's RUb. I believe that will be important to players who are only occasional visitors to this forum (or the Ubisoft forum). Although I didn't mean the suggestion 'NewRUb' to be the last word, it remains closest to what is really required. Any other suggestions, please?
Stiebler.

Beery, why can't we just keep calling it RUb? :hmm:
Beery, why can't we just keep calling it RUb? :hmm:
Well, I'm still planning on issuing RUb 2.0. I just don't know when. I guess you could still call it RUb, and I could change the name of the one I'm going to release. I'd just prefer the mod to be called something else if I'm not the one deciding what goes in it and hosting it.
By the way, thinking of it...
I'm certainly not ruling myself out, but I wouldn't be able to take full charge of it alone in the same way as Beery. I can probably manage to pull a few new additions and refreshers into Ops by myself, but something like RUb is certainly not something I'd be able to keep up with all on my own.
Well, we'll see who else comes up. Either way, we know it's not the end of SHIII modding. :)

Thanks for all your hard work on SH3 Commander and RuB. The community benefited from all of you and your mod team's hard work. :sunny:

Amen to that! Beery, I hope you have a wonderful holiday season -- the way things are shaping up, mine will be grrreat!
As for RUB, I vote that RUB keeps its name. It's a lot more standard that way. I have a small Christmas present for Beery: "Beery's Last U-Boat" mod -- BLUB.
Is that "The Movies" game responsible? Oh well, damn Peter Molyneux and his occasionally good games.

I don't think that's the only reason though. I've heard Beery talk about stopping involvement with SHIII months ago (as early as July, I think), so it's certainly not a sudden decision.
But I won't speak for him :P I don't think he or anyone else needs an excuse.
I'm really sorry to that Beery is moving on...RUb has been the foundation of SH3 for me since it came out. However I'm glad to hear others will continue to build on it. Because of the mods SH3 is without question the best PC game I've ever played...and I've been playing them for 15+ years. I don't have any aptitude for making mods but I sure appreciate the generosity of the people who do.

I'm also sorry that Beery is moving on. I hope that after a suitable interval he returns. He and the RUB team have made the $40 I spent on this game the best money I have ever spent, and I thank them all. Irish1958

What!? Another prophet? I am torn between two leaders feeling like a fool...
Bah, ignore them. gouldjg has promised us sea monsters and such :D
I'm sorry to hear about Beery's decision. This is the end of an era. But I understand it. Personally, I'd like so see someone of the old gang taking over RuB. I'd like to nominate CCIP, and even though he might have a different opinion on this, I think that he's perfectly suited for the task! :D
I wonder about the idea of making "RUb patches" rather than revising the whole thing. I have the feeling that unless we suddenly get another significant patch from Ubisoft and everything has to be re-configured, there's probably enough good reasons to keep RUb 1.5 as the standard, and just issue small patches for it with new features or fixes as they come up.
I'm sure that would end up being more manageable, even if it adds another (very simple) step in the installation process. :hmm:

Did you think at least one of us wouldn't catch the reference?

I had hoped that no-one would catch on, but I couldn't help myself :rotfl:

The difficulty with this approach will be if one file is modified by different modders in different ways. No method of overlays will enable both to be operative at the same time. It is necessary for a mod-master to take the key features of both mods and manually add them to the existing common file.
This may also involve a (very necessary) degree of selection by the mod-master if, for some reason, both files cannot be combined into one master file. But that's part of the job specification.
This thread appears to have stagnated for a while. Surely there must be new suggestions for the way ahead? We cannot let RUb just disappear through apathy! Any more proposals for a new name for RUb? Anyone else want to suggest themselves or others as the new mod-master? Is CCIP still willing to take over the job?
Stiebler.
I'm certainly still interested - though cautiously not to get myself into too much.
If I were to take it up, there's three things I'd need aside from my own time and interest:
1) Webspace (not a huge deal, but I think it's still important - Beery's own website definitely helped things; I can't see myself paying for webspace at the moment)
2) A plan (that's the big one - I've been a bit out of the picture as far as testing new developments in a while, so I'd even need to know where it is that we can take things past RUb...)
3) A team (the truth is that I'm almost the last 'surviving' member of the original SHIII Mod Team; I think it should be a requirement to continuing work that the SHIII Mod Team is ressurected/re-drafted)
Otherwise, I'm always willing. I don't see much glory in being 'Mod Master', but I know how important the result is for the community :)
