Okay, so today I "took the plunge" and installed RUB 1.45. I have been running SH3 since it came out with the latest patches, using 1.4b since it first came out. Enjoying SH3 immensely. Today I had some extra time and figured I would FINALLY give RUB 1.45 a try.
I first installed the all important JoneSoft Generic Mod Enabler. Then I installed RUB 1.45 per instructions, and used the "enabler" to turn it on. All systems go!
I had just returned to Brest (I'm in 1941, summer)... making sure I was in port before installing RUB 1.45.
The first issue I came across was when loading the mission (from my save "in port" in Brest). When loading a pop-up window came up with the message : "Your home port has been changed to Kiel" (or something very close to that verbage). I tried clicking on the "OK" button and after about 16 clicks the pop-up finally went away. Now, I was not REALLY moved to Kiel (fortunately). My orders still said sailing from Brest, return to Brest.
Now, everytime I start a previously saved mission (even a mission saved while in the middle of a patrol) I get that same stupid pop-up message and it takes many mouse clikcs to finally clear it.
Okay, on to strange thing number two. In short, I really like RUB. Nice stuff there (thanks to all the contributors!). I had a perfect encounter with a lone DD that was textbook.
Then, I finally came across a group of two ships (Large Cargo - LC, and some coastal merchant). I choose to get the LC for first shot. I dived down, got in perfect position, did all the "manual stuff" and was just about to fire when all of a sudden the LC dissapeared! Well, the ship did... the masts and funnel were still visible. The ship was only about 1200 meters away.
Wondering what happened, I did the outside camera thing and moved over to the LC. Well, it turns out it started raining! And visibility had gone way down (the water condition was like a calm lake, initially). Then the storm started moving in. THunder and lightning even.
Now, the point I am finally getting to here (sorry) is that the coastal merchant did not suffer this dissapearing act. Its hull was still visible at a reasonable distance. Only the LC's hull dissapeared unless I moved very close to it with the camera. (interestingly, even the periscope "lock" would not work on the LC any more.
Now, the storm and all was very cool, etc. BUT, here is my question...
Is it possible that the changes in transparency for the water (the water in RUB is more "real" in that it is darker) have also changed the transparency aspect for ships (in particular those with a hull color that is similar to water color - such as the LC)?
I believe there is a way to disable only the water change effect in RUB. If someone can tell me how, I could try that out and report if it changes the situation.
Just as a note, all other aspects of SH3 (before and after installing RUB) work fine on my system.
Thank you!
