View Full Version : Do you want Awards ?

Before going any further with this process, its time to take stock.
There has been no measure of the level of support for the concept.

If anything reaction has generaly been tepid, with some notable exceptions. If we achieve poll numbers
for individual Awards in single figures it will call into question the validity of the process.

A review of current Polls in General shows that a mean average show of 30 votes per poll.

So now is the critical moment - you decide whether you want these awards, or not.

I fully support awards, but truly would like to see a more full discussion on catagories.
I really bilieve people who have helped correct, expand etc, both DW and SC need to be recognized.
I assume by script writing you mean scenario development, while Mr Nichols has developed scenarios, and very good ones, is there anyone out there who has not visited his site over and over, that rates some type of award. I am sure I check his site once a week at least.
I suggest we get input from as many people as we can and really develop the areas we would like to see recognized. My hat is off to Bellman for taking the lead on this it is something that is long over due. The work of so many has made SC and DW truly very good Naval Sims. I wish this group would have taken Fleet Command and worked it, I believe it would be on par with SC and DW. If Sonalyst was really on top of it they would re-release FC and let this group have at it, you would see a top flight Sim.
I am 65 years old and while I am still active reading the items on this site and playing SC and DW(well trying to), is a very entertaining part of my life. I would much rather do that than to watch the high quality TV we get. I read the News on SubSim daily.
There are many people who rate awards in my humble opinion.

Forgive me for being cynical but how will it work?

What will be the award and how will it be done.

I just make models for the hell of it not for awards.

I voted no as I can't see how it will work and what will be given to who and also people will spit out dummies if they aren't mentioned.

Xab:Forgive me for being cynical but how will it work?
 Well it wont get off the ground with the present showing

The suggestion is that 'Award' would be given after a poll inviting people to acknowledge the best contributions
in various fields. Starting with 'Scripters' we then move on to another category such as 'Modders' etc.

If someone is voted for example, 'Ace Scripter Gold' they may wish to incorprate that in their signature.
DarkSythe is preparing an insigniia.

Xab:I just make models for the hell of it not for awards. Of course how could you do anything else- when no Awards existed ?

But no reason why the community cant say thanks Xab for all your work - we vote you (Award) -
'Modder Gold/Siver?/ Bronze (As appropriate)

Xab: also people will spit out dummies if they aren't mentioned.
Sorry, not beeing difficult, but I have'nt the foggiest idea of what you are talking about with ''dummies'' Please clarify ?

I think the best way to go would be to nominate someone as being worthy of distinction, and then a group vote on that person's merits.

In this way it would be more like the medal system in the military than a competative process, meaning that multiple people could hold the same award.

So, for example, I would nominate person X as a Mission Designer of Merit or something, and then create a poll thread, if the majority or 2/3's voted for the person to receive the award, then they would get the award.

I think that would work better than a set competative process for a number of reasons.

:) LW We have to recognise shades of excellence IMO - Gold, silver and bronze.

We invite open nominations - folk put names forward by posting to for example a 'Scripter' Award thread'
We prepare a short list ( 4-5 ?) and put those names up for polling.

Top score = Gold, next silver...etc

Just my thoughts but glad to hear others.

I think getting overly competetive mission designing etc will only hurt the community as a whole.

Best modder?
Unless it becomes the rather pointless "lwami award"... (At least until it possibly changes to "dwx award")
...yeah, right. I don't want 10+ mods hanging around if I can help it. In such a competing environment, there might be considerable accusations of copying etc, and multiplayer will suffer - we don't want that. And that is what such an award will encourage, if not accomplish.

Best mission designer?
Here you run into a few problems. Least of which is that it may be discouraging for someone who just can't seem to reach the top, you may end up with mission makers trying to outdo each other, with the missions that will entail. The complexity will go up to climb the impresscale, but overall quality may not follow.

Best mission?
Might be on to something here, but this would probably require several sub-categories, based on realism, balance(mp), short/medium/long/verylong duration etc etc.

On the other hand, a 'medal' system as outlined by LW, will probably do a bit better.

Bellman

:D At this moment, if we proceed the 'recognition of service' type Award is historical. Next time (if there is one) yes I
agree we should be concerned about the incentive effects which indeed could be negative, if we are'nt carefull.
But I dont see it as 'overly competitive' and striving for some excellence cannot 'hurt the community' IMO.
The point is we are saying "Thank you very much'' to an individual for his/her contribution above and beyond the norm.
That of itself does not devalue everybody elses input.

LW and your suggestion of a 'medal' type system has much merit. Particularly, I think if we invite nominations
and then poll for a short list, before the final 'medal' poll. Top voted 'medal' poll gets 'Gold' and so on ?

I like the 'Best Mission' category. Also we dont have to be too intense in all our choices, there is room
for a little light relief. For example maybe we could also have 'Best Signature ' (Or funniest ;) )
No reason why we should'nt award ' Most helpfull poster,' 'Most humorous poster' etc. Heck we can work it so that
everyone gets an Award if thats what you want. ;)

I partly agree with Mahuja, but, while for me working in the shadows suffice, competition works too, see sportsman, scientists etcetera.
So a bit from both works best I think.

Bellman
11-25-05, 05:13 AM
:D Yep - good point.

The thing is that if someone feels that they 'dont work for Awards' or if they have any other objection, they are
quite free to 'Opt-out' if they are nominated at stage one.

 We dont want to 'mark' them out if they dont want it. :yep:

Bellman

:sunny: That looks like a 'yes' to me. :yep:

The first Award will be for mission designers who have produced your favourite single play scenarios
in DW, SC, SCX and SCU whether those are within a campaign or not.

So I propose starting by inviting nominations for Ace Scripter SP. There will be Gold, Silver and Bronze categorise.

We shall short list the top 5 by nomination numbers and then have a poll for 'Gold' etc.

We can then move on to MP.

I will open a new thread.
