Here's my issue: I want to play sh3 on high realism, so I would like to get rid of the real-time visual ship position updates because it makes plotting way too easy. This could easily be achieved by turning off god's eye mode, I know, but I want to keep the sonar contact lines of bearing and radio update icons. Now if there is a mod that will remove the realtime updated icons, then awesome, but somehow I doubt that there's a mod that does this without modding other things I don't want modded.

So if there's no mod, how can I do this myself? I was thinking that it would be simple enough to just remove the icons for ships, but I was wondering if that the radio update icons use the same ones as the realtime ones, because that would suck to be missing radio reports. Also, how easy would it be to modify the defficulty setting definitions so that sonar contact lines of bearing weren't taken off the map when god's eye view is disabled?

Give this a try...

There is a mod out there titled "Realistic Plotting 1.4b v2", it contains modified .tga files which will remove the visual contact graphic on the map, as well as other changes that improve the challenge of manual plotting.

try looking for it at http://u-boot.realsimulation.com/

Yes, but this mod gives you small, bearly visible lines as sonar lines. The mod you ask for is a combination of this "Realistic Plotting " mod but with full visible lines as in stock game. I guess someone who is skilled in photshop can do this. I think others in this forum have asked for the same thing a while ago.

Does anyone knows what files these lines are in? I maybe could try myself.

If i am not wrong .... the responsible of the ship ploting on map is your crew.

If you edit its max range visibility you can loss its hability to plot ships.

This value is into sensors.dat in the first 4 pairs of numbers of the line 06e5d8

In example if you have

06e5d8 00 40 9c 46 ........ you will have crew with 20.000m spoting range and ploting capability on map.

06e5d8 00 60 ea 46 .........you will have crew with 30.000m spoting range and ploting capability on map.

Try editng this value to a lower value, in example 2000m and you will have not any ship ploted beyond this point.

But you will have not any "ship spoted sir" beyond this value.

If i am not wrong this must to works fine....... i think so.

Best Regards, Red.

Maybe if it updated every couple minutes, but right now it's as if my crew has laser rangefinders.

I think I'll try the plotting mod. All I need is the visual representation of hydrophone data because I am too lazy to plot the lines manually.
